There was talk and warnings about running out of gas on I-5 south through central CA in the early 1970's. There were hardly any services along it since it bypassed the valley's major cities after Stockton and Grapevine was nothing then. But it sure was faster than 101 or 99!

A couple of days ago, CalTrans had to close The Grapevine down for a while due to the amount of snow it got! I feel for the drivers who were struck on the I-5 while it was closed- & thankfully you didn't get caught up as well!

Love virtual Grapevine trips! Been over Tejon twice, once as a passenger and once as a driver. It's more dramatic than the camera can show...

As a truck driver living in Bakersfield, I’ve been over that hill more time then I can count. With all this moisture this winter, they are going to have some great wildflowers come spring. It will be worth a trip over that hill

Always great to see footage of the Grapevine! It looks even more magical during winter, real impressive building an 8 lane freeway through these mountains.

Thank you! I can't think of any other mountain pass in the US where you see eight lanes of traffic. Only in California!

Kyle, I admit that Tejon Pass is my favorite stretch of I-5 in SoCal. As a mountain pass, it's obviously part of the county line of Los Angeles and Kern Counties.

Wait, you didn’t stop at In-n-Out on Laval Rd before climbing the Grapevine? Just kidding. Always love this drive in the winter. But my favorite memory was seeing an early Spring superbloom a few years back. The entire side of the mountain covered in purple wildflowers.

We lived in Fresno/ Clovis, my in-laws in Orange County, so we made this trip for 30 yrs! Also when I was a child I lived in Tehachapi for 2 yrs. So this scenery is like home, except we have now moved out of CA. Don't miss it, except, the Chinese food!

Driven that route many times -- both ways. A great side excursions is the Frazier Mntn Park road to Mt. Pinos . Right up to the 8300 ft. parking lot. And not far from summit (8900 ft --- the highest spot of coastal range in the whole state --- and what a scenic drive!!)

After spending all afternoon driving 70-80 mph southbound suddenly everything goes into slow motion going up that hill. One time I drove it the hills were purple from all the flowers in bloom. When northbound, I've always loved passing that truck escape ramp and looking down the valley. It's awesome. Soon the eight-lane I-5 exits on itself and becomes a boring four-lane freeway, so I usually stay on the six-lane CA 99.

I love the subtropical climate in SoCal during the winter, even though there isn't much snow there, except NoCal have more snow than SoCal.

Right before you go up the grapevine, there's the Tejon outdoor outlets, cool little outdoor shopping center. There are some nice views from the grounds there. And the area has gas stations, hotels, and some eating places to fill up before the drive through the grapevine

The northbound view looks so different from the southbound view. Of course, the south sides of the slopes are sunlit all day long and are thus warmer than the shady north sides. Thus, the snow melts rapidly.
You're so lucky to have filmed during one of the rare times that there is snow on the ground in this area.

    • @InterstateKyle

You are very correct, the sun angles play a big factor in the snow being present on the landscape.

A few suggestions for videos: Glenwood Canyon along I-70 in Colorado, both ways; Lovelace Pass and the Eisenhower Tunnel 1-70 eastbound descent into Denver; I-90 either way at Mississippi River crossing between Minnesota/Wisconsin; US 50 South Lake Tahoe to Carson City; Donner Pass, Truckee to Reno; Spooner Summit, Reno to North Lake Tahoe, either way; US 95 south approaching Lewiston, ID. I've driven all of them, they are amazing.
