    Thanks i live in castaic. And have drove the 99 a few years back.my grandfather ran a garage and towing up past the old ralphs.boat store now

    Growing up Bakersfield in the 1950s-1970s both terms "Grapevine " and "Ridge Route " were used interchangeably among locals and out of towners. We hardly called it Hwy 99 or Interstate 5. Same is true today .Bill formally from Bakersfield

      Even those of us in Fresno call it either the "Grape Vine" or "Ridge Route". Even the TV weatherman calls it that. Everyone knows what you are talking about.

    there were (free) water radiator pull-offs located next to the wild grapes, as kids we stopped and added water to the radiator and picked/ate the wild grapes

      There still are a couple of stops on the uphill grade at Grapevine where you can do that today.
