    As this film opens, we see "Barbara," a teenager, weeping into her hands. "It's a little late for tears, isn't it?" asks the unforgiving narrator. Barbara, she informs us, has had a bad day -- but because she is sloppy and unorganized, she deserved it. We then travel back in time and see how Barbara's day became a nightmare; how she was invited to an after-school party with an important new social group; and how her poor grooming and unpolished manners sent her straight to Social Hell. The narrator gleefully reminds us "how easy it is not to be invited again," and "how quickly you can be left out of the crowd." "People are going to talk," she adds, and when they talk, "our faults are more easily discussed." By this point we're back to the beginning of the film, and Barbara is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Happily, she sees the light, and becomes lovely, better-groomed and (we hope) never again the subject of films such as this. Relentless.

    I find it really interesting how everyone gives Helen the OCD label to define what is wrong with her (even though she is doing perfectly fine), and Barbara the ADD label, to define why she doesn't have to try, because it is hard for her... It says a lot about our society today. Especially because the two girls in the movie are probably completely normal, they just have different habits to make a point, lol.

    • @beccahawkins1905
      @beccahawkins1905 Год назад +7

      Both girls are indeed "completely normal." But what is normal, anyway?
      I don't know that Helen is "OCD" (not my read of her at all). She's just neurotypical. That doesn't mean she's better than Barbara. Just that daily tasks don't come as easily to Barbara as they do to Helen.
      Helen is more like the average person. Barbara definitely appears (at least to me, an unqualified person to make such a diagnosis) shows signs of ADHD, though. Not that any of us commenting about that are qualified to make such armchair diagnoses, haha! I'm not a psychologist. I don't think it's that she's not trying...it's that her brain works differently. In fact, I think she's crying because she is trying so hard to make her brain keep up with the world around her and failing. Today we have means of coping available for people like Barbara (if she does have ADHD). In the 50s, it was just seen as a moral character flaw.
      Still, habit formation does help with things like this. It just takes some people longer to figure out how to form good habits.

    I am 60 years old and I grew up in those days. I had to wear dresses to grade school and the rules of society were very unforgiving. That is all I knew. I think that alot of people should care more about his or her appearance, but within a healthy balance. It is good to be organized, but back then people didn't understand add and other things like depression which truly affect people. I am glad we, as a society have come a long way.

      Agreed. Good comment Sandra.
      The film shows two things: - Most obviously it shows the problems of being disorganised which I agree is a good message ... There is however another underlying message in the film: That a young woman must conform or risk being a social outcast. In the 50s there was too much pressure to "fit in" or "be normal, etc. and not much sympathy or understanding of people as individuals. Thanks for your comment Sandra.

    • @myteutonics
      @myteutonics 9 лет назад +12

      I'm glad you feel more comfortable in today's society and feel that it is more forgiving nowadays, but as somebody from a later decade (the 80's) I can tell you, that there may be more acceptance around now concerning a certain amount of personal lifestyle, sexuality and clothing style but on the other hand it's still extremely easy to become an outcast. It will still be rare that a secretary could have a tattoo showing, dyed hair, etc. And just try being a teenager at school nowadays - if you don't dress a certain way or put on lots of makeup from a certain age on, you will still be an outsider (I have 6 nephews and 3 nieces attending school, so I see what's going on).
      I think we will always feel negative about a time in which we didn't feel comfortable - no matter if the time was/is perfect or not for others and consequentely wish ourselves into a time in which we think we would have fit in more, blind to the possible problems that could have been existing there too.

    • @HereIAm247
      @HereIAm247 6 лет назад +5

      We always say we should accept and love everyone for who they are - but no-one ever does. Part of the reason is that it is human nature to judge. It always have been, it still is, and it probably always will be. Not to be pointlessly mean, but as a strategy to survive and thrive in life; who can contribute socially, and who will be a 'burden'. (I was the burden for years, so don't crucify me)
      The reason we want people to stop judging, is because we are afraid we can't live up to their standards (or our own), or because we don't want to make the effort to try. Yes, it can be stressful, especially if it is not something you are suited for. But I personally think some different standards would benefit society, and create people who are more mentally prepared for life.
      We SAY looks doesn't matter; but they always will. And good organisation and habits WILL help you gain more opportunities in life. We can refuse to 'conform', which is fine; as long as we understand that the result is that we will have less opportunities, and people might judge us negatively. We can also choose to make the most of ourselves, inside and outside, and gain the ability and skill to handle more opportunities as they arise.

    • @AKayfabe
      @AKayfabe 4 года назад +1

      Q I think they seemed nicer to folks who did fit in and were within the confines of what accepted was. If someone was a black person back then, they were segregated or treated like lesser. So in that instance no. If you followed the mold then sure. If you “ acted like a lady” in public men would hold doors for you and treat you kindly, but if you were different, they would judge you. It was easy to be an outcast just by not dressing like everyone else. Yes people looked neater and stuff, dressier. But if someone did not want to be, they’d be ostracized.
      If you were a woman, your job list was limited too. If you were a woman who did not choose to have kids, by choice, not infertility, you would not fit in then because all your friends had kids. If your husband abused you in private, there really was nothing you could do. If you were gay you had to hide it because gay was considered a mental illness then by most.
      These are exact things my grandmother told me abt the 50s. My grandmother was a young adult in the 50s and lived from them until the 2000s and saw society change quite a lot over the years.
      She said yes in fact things like jobs for men were all but guaranteed and had benefits, etc. and you could exist on one income and get a house. Some things were better. But a lot were not as ok too

    Reading the comments below show that we haven't changed much since then. We just judge different things as good. As someone pointed out here, the high value of individualism is a judgment call as much as anything else. I grew up in the '60s and saw the double-standard hypocrisy of my peers against their parents. No one (!) was more judgmental than the youth of their parents back then. They criticized the "crass materialism" of their parents, except of course, when the parents gave them money or paid their rent.

      @HereIAm247 6 лет назад +1

      Cangel Tibon, thank you for having some common sense! Everyone seems to think that a diagnosis is an excuse for not trying. Really, it just means you are more challenged in certain areas, not that you can't learn. (I have aspergers, and that have certainly been a challenge, but I have come a long way, and will hopefully continue to improve). The thing is, with or without a diagnosis, everyone have things they are talented at, and things they are less suited for. :)
      I actually thought the narrator was partially Barbaras own inner voice, imagining what others would say about her. Compared to how I used to speak to myself (and I know many others still speak to themselves), she was an angel, lol. What she did was point out her insecurities/the bad habits, and how they impacted her life negatively. Then she compared it to what Helen was doing, and why that could help Barbara solve her problems. More as a role model to show her how to do things right (because she didn't know, or forgot the importance), rather than saying "You will always be a looser, and Helen will always be superior". More like "If you do things this way, you will become a better version of yourself, make a better impression on people, and gain more opportunities/happiness in life." But maybe that is just me. :)

    So much negative comments. I actually find these videos rather helpful . I really don't give a shit if you're un organized, wear dirty clothes , or don't eat breakfast. Everybody is comfortable their way and that's okay but for some people and I also speak for myself would much rather drop some of the habits that don't fit in with the lifestyle that we find ideal. I used to be dirty , lazy, and un healthy and do nothing but be on my computer all day but after seeing videos like this I actually took some advice (not all) and my life style has really improved and I am much happier. That's because I personally felt like I needed to stop the bad habits I had that really made me feel like shit and I think these videos are great help for the people who do acknowledge their bad habits and are looking to better them selves to ultimately better their life style. If you are comfortable waking up late, not eating breakfast, being unorganized etc. then hey pal that's just fine, who is anybody to judge an individuals way of life. To all the negative commenters ,I don't think these videos are for your personal use. For us who seek the help then these videos might help out a bit. I find joy in these classic videos and classic views. Idk something about them is truly magical to me.

    So Helen spends an inordinate amount of time thinking about what she is going to wear, making sure her clothes are straight and matching, with no spots. She cleans her nails, reads the right books, listens to the right music. And she kills it in social situations. And able to do all this with plenty of time to spare and go to bed on time. WELL- little Miss Perfect did NOT make her bed. And she did not help her mother clear the table, she just left her plate there. So don't feel too bad, Barbera.

    Uhm, evil narrator, Barbara is not being "deviant".
    "Deviant" is torturing animals behind the garage. "Deviant" is actually climbing out the window at about 9PM to go meet the boys at the pool hall. "Deviant" is stealing from the neighbors' vehicles' gas tanks in the alley and calling the cops complaining about the dogs barking at you while you are stealing gas and mail from the mailboxes out front, narrator.
    "Deviant" is smiling at the teacher and pretending to be friends with Helen and then when the teacher is out of sight, dragging Helen to the spot behind the cafeteria and punching her lights out for being a little snip.

I couldn't change my families attitudes on the way to see things, and when you have a certain monthly problem that is actually debilitating you can only think about how that could cause unwanted things to happen. And sadly become a habit that can't be fixed. In truth I wish I could have been more like Helen, but then again that was impossible.

      Nokomarie The narrator is in a motherly position, and, frankly, Barbara needs to be told she has bad habits. Being late to school every day, lying to her mother, having messy clothes, and having horrible manners in conversation aren't very positive qualities.Sorry if you're too pretentious to be told when you're doing something wrong, but if someone *is* a dirty, rude, self-deceiving little procrastinator, she ought to hear it from someone.
