Obligations (1950)

- The makers of "Date With Your Family" return with "Obligations", and, while it's not quite as over the top as "Date With Your Family," this little gem still has a lot going for it. Members of two families illustrate correct and incorrect manner of taking care of their obligations to one another, although the word "obligation" is frequently used when "obedience" or "compliance" would be more appropriate.

@Rubber Dub Profanity is for bores, you are better than that, you proved it by watching this.
Excellent point.
In elementary school, our librarian used to show films similar to this. It was the 70s but the films were from the 50s. They were basic, no overproduction or glitz, just straight forward advice and guidance. I still practice these values to this day.
Same! They didn’t make many educational films in the 60s and 70s, and the ones they did make were about drugs and child molesters. For basic, positive life advice we had to go back to the 50s.
And now what do we have to show for it? Generations with no real structure just wifi this phone that.
Obligations, How To Be Well Groomed and Habit Patterns should be shown together. Each reinforces the other. A lot of overlap. ALL of these films are gems. Glad they were not lost to mold or fire in some warehouse.
Thank GOD for that...
Teach your children these things when they are young. Don't wait until they are teenager's and then complain because their lazy. A 2 year old is perfectly capable of doing small things like putting toys away, etc.

Let’s bring this back.

Ya think?
She would be even more unappreciated if she was working at some corporation.......

Mom's in a bad mood because she's raised rude children and she's disorganized in her own affairs so that she doesn't even know what's going on in her own home.
She’s ungrateful her children are perfectly mannered
Wow. People showing grace, class, and manners. What a concept!

You're only thinking about yourself. Kids between 3 and 8 should get a good beatin' every week or two if you want an orderly house. Caution: Do not overbeat! Just until they form soft peaks.
My generation learned to be organized and fill obligations to others in the U.S. Army, if we didn't learn it at home. We also learned our obligations to our country that way too.
When raising my own and helping others to grow up during the 1980's I called this practice "BEING A CITIZEN OF THE FAMILY". I love history and this glimpse of how they lived in the honeymoon era with the end of WWII. The most prosperous time for the "working man". Thanks, Shaggy.
"Worthy members of adult society" I wish this was even half true today, but there are so many "grown children" in our culture. You almost have to disregard someone's age and just observe how they conduct themselves to get an idea of who you can trust or count on.
Well said.
Immensely true
I came back here to update: it’s significantly worse only after a few years 🥴
@@sofiabravo1994 SO much worse. I mean, oh who new how bad it would get.

The best part of the film is how brother and sister get along so well. I wish I had a sister like that😇
I remember my homemaking class. I was 13 by then and everything was so exciting in that class, maybe it was the thought of 'feeling like a grown up'. I'm in my thirties now and I'm trying to teach my toddler how to take care of his things (toys, shoes and clothes), and it's so true that if they make a habit of it, you don't have to remind them anymore, they do it by themselves. Thanks for uploading :)
I hope the 2020's will come to be known as the decade where everything turned around, that a more advanced version of 1950 returns

romerozombie85 I sure wish I lived in the 50's
Some things never go out of date, like the advice in this film. I also noticed a table to the right of the refrigerator, similar to one I still own. They made things to last back then.
There was pride in your workmanship and if something got broke it wasn't thrown away, it was repaired if possible.
My family had a refrigerator similar to the one in the film. My parents got it in 1954 and it lasted until 1971. Nowadays things breakdown as soon the warranty runs out.
Up until the 90's Companies had pride in their products and would strive for quality
My aunt had the same washer almost my entire life up until she died. It had to be over twenty years old. Now you're lucky if things last five years
I wish that families today understood these principles. People are too selfish today to worry about the greater good of the family . Everyone seems to be worried about what's best for themselves.
i think obligation is the right word since it should be a must to be useful at home
I wish my life was like this growing up. Really...not kidding lol.
Me, too. I grew up in the 50s and 60s and my parents never taught me much about such obligations. By the time I reached ninth grade I had become completely sick of being so disorganized and did a complete about-face with my life, starting with straightening up my room and keeping it that way. If nobody else was going to be interested, I would at least derive the satisfaction of having fixed things.
Miriam Bucholtz That was your parents fault. My parents were exactly like these movies. They taught me respect of my elders, community and God. I'm in my mid sixties now and am so sick of our young who are selfish, entitled and crude and rude. Life had order back than because citizenship. Being a good neighbor was important. No longer people will harm you now for thinking different than you do. We have actually become uncivilized, crude and classless. How people dressed back than reflected how they cared for themselves. They showed grace and elegance.
So do I.
You can re-educate yourself if you try.
Please don't give up because others have made mistakes in your life.
Me to!
I love how these kids study hard and schedule everything to a T! I really admire them and I can identify with them. Admirable!
The 4-sided part is a racket press. When rackets were made of wood and gut, they were stored in such a device, which clamped tightly over the frame, to prevent them warping out of shape.

I hope when I have kids I can raise them to be respectful and well kept. Some people today are just disgraceful

It's amazing how Brother and Sis can manage to sock away money regularly, buy a new sweater and trout rod, and go to the movies, all on a 35 cent allowance.
Most kids got 50 cents to 75 cents. A new sweater was about $2.00. A fishing rod could be as much as $2.00 but often cheaper and a movie was 25cents and you saw 2 movies and cartoons for that price and could stay to see it again and again if you wanted. A gallon of gas was 18 cents. Loaf of bread was about 18cents and you could get a coca cola for 10cents. A full meal at a diner was about 1.50. Average income in the USA was $3000. and a new house averaged $8,000. Life was simplier and cost a lot less by comparison. It was easier to live then.
ITS called a budget. And it works ,Ask Dave Ramsey and Vanguard.
These films depress me so much for how much society has decayed into coarse selfishness. :o(
They also shame me on some of my own behaviour.
I am watching these short films constantly myself. I scour RUclips for all of these I can find and it's because I love the civilized, courteous and genteel world they depict more than anything else. I so wish I lived in times that were like these. I think many of us do.
I was born in 1949 so I got to have a two parent home. I was taught the world owes me nothing and to motivate myself.
C moore Your generation was the last to grow up having a mother and father together and usually the mother was at home as the norm, the standard. By the time the Baby Boomer generation grew up and started having kids everything went to hell. Abortion, feminism (known then as Women's Lib) and divorce became commonplace if not the standard, with the courts pretty much giving custody of the children to the mother automatically. By now we have at least 2 or 3 generations of men who were reared by women only, seeing their fathers every other weekend, or some such nonsense. And people wonder what has happened to men these days. Yes, your generation was the last to enjoy the luxuries depicted in this film as the norm.
do you really think families were really like that?? come on for fuck sake it was propaganda. Life was not perfect in the 50s
Actually it was the norm. Sadly not any more.
Must be nice to not have have to grow up in a dysfunctional family. This film also makes me embarrassed about how I've acted in my own life. *sigh*
But you can keep trying even now. Do little things like make your bed and pick up your bedroom so if the rest of the day is disorganized, at least you came home to a nice made up bedroom.
I am still working on it but I make an awesome bed. Now for the rest of the house. BIG SIGH!!!
We all have a past... not much we can do about it now.
Is there such thing as a family with at least some dysfunction?
Long White Mane don’t worry. all families are dysfunctional in there own ways
Shame, shame, shame. You do know why they made this film, right?!?! BECAUSE THERE WERE DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILIES BACK THEN. They just had little aversion to propaganda films telling people what they should do. And you guys are sucking it all up think, "How great it was back then". It wasn't and you're lying to yourselves so you can judge people around you.
I hate to sound draconian, but wow, this video makes sense! What's wrong with the concept of family, and taking personal responsibility? Not to make fun of the first family mentioned, but wow, what a HOT MESS. Reminds me of our Government: disorganized, clueless...nobody cares or takes responsibility for anything? I certainly don't want to adopt the general ideals of the 40's or '50's, but the ethics of work and family seem right?
TheMabes69 Govt has done it's best to destroy the family, especially in the urban areas. No dads mean you look to govt for support in exchange for your votes.

@@joao_1986 some things will always be relevant
If you agree with this video so much, why wouldn’t you adopt the ideas of the 40s and 50s????
Not draconian at all ... the concept of a family meal and some basic common sense rules around it likely would do more for family and social order than anything else.
Ooh a refreshment committee.
loved watching this, it gives you a peek into those times, loved it.
What a wonderful time of life!!!!
Seventy years later, nothing has changed. Timeless advice for anyone in any culture.
My grandmother used to listen to a radio program that had a character named "Fibber McGee". He was always out of sorts, unorganized, messy. She would tell my mother to pick up her room, so she wouldn't be like Fibber McGee.
Now my mother passed that story to me and my junk drawer is affectionately called "my Fibber McGee drawer". Just a sweet memory I have. ❤❤

I would definitely follow every single piece of advice in this video, but I have kind of a dysfunctional family. We can turn anything into an argument, so nothing could be this good

If you know right from wrong, then morals are no more subjective than the sky being blue.
santamonicagirl4life Except when the sky is black at night, or grey when it's cloudy and/or raining, or a whole beautiful spectrum of colours during sunrise and sunset.
Perhaps some people shouldn't have missed class when they discussed what makes the sky blue. This is pretty elementary.
Yeah, it's because air particles reflect blue light.

Everything wasn't automated and the selflessness was trained out of them yet.

The mother is so mad when the daughter asks her to hand her her sweater, she was literally between the girl and the sweater.
She was mad that the sweater had been left on a table rather than put away like it should have been and then the girl expects others to wait on her when she is too lazy to clean up her own crap.

Go live that 50s life to the fullest by being respectful and not whining about genders, sexuality, today's lifestyle, or whatever.
It's so tempting to see these old instructional films as documentaries, instead as guidelines. NO, people were not perfect back then either. They cheated and lied and did all kinds of unpleasant stuff too. They were just lots better at hiding it.
