"Sukiyaki" or "Ue Wo Muite Arukō" (上を向いて歩こう?, "I Look Up As I Walk") is a Japanese-language song that was performed by Japanese crooner Kyu Sakamoto, and written by lyricist Rokusuke Ei and composer Hachidai Nakamura. Ei wrote the lyrics while walking home from a Japanese student demonstration protesting continued US Army presence, expressing his frustration at the failed efforts. In Anglophone countries, it is best known under the alternative title "Sukiyaki," a term with no relevance to the song's lyrics.
The song reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the United States in 1963, and remains to date the only Japanese-language song ever to have done so. In addition, it was and still is one of the few non-Indo-European languages' songs to have reached the top of the US charts. It is one of the best-selling singles of all time, having sold over 13 million copies worldwide. The original Kyu Sakamoto recording also went to number eighteen on the R&B chart. In addition, the single spent five weeks at number one on the Middle of the Road charts. The recording was originally released in Japan by Toshiba in 1961. It topped the Popular Music Selling Record chart in the Japanese magazine Music Life for three months, and was ranked as the number one song of 1961 in Japan.
Well-known English-language cover versions with altogether different lyrics include "My First Lonely Night" by Jewel Akens in 1966 and "Sukiyaki" by A Taste of Honey in 1980. The song has also been recorded in many other languages.

I have no idea how the original text goes in english and I dont understand the original language of Sakiyaki, but perhaps they need to change something to fit the melody.

This version is a song about the original song. The lyrics (and language) are different from Kyu Sakamoto's; they refer to the original song by its western title "Sukiyaki".

@@jrgenskarstein8446 apparently I replied to the wrong person. Was AF2Z saying the "song by its western title Sukiyaki" with different lyrics and language from the Japanese song was the original? That's so obviously not the original, as there's only one and only original Japanese Ue wo muite arukou. Anything after that are covers.
To address your point, no versions are actually about beefstew. But if the covers keep adding random Japanese words (in this case sukiyaki, aka beefstew ), it'd only make it sound hilariously ridiculous. Imagining singing about love or whatever and sprinkling it with "beefstews" in between. The original song with Japanese lyrics (about frustration with the political situation), when released in the US under the title "Sukiyaki", never actually featured any sukiyaki in the lyrics. I rest my case here.

I loved to hear Kyu Sakamoto sing this but Sissel sings it as good as anyone. Better. Love her voice.
I fell in love with her voice when she sang most of the vocals for TITANIC in 1997. Celine Dion sang MY HEART WILL GO ON, but Sissel sang the rest.
I always admire Sissel's mastery of singing in so many different lanquages .

Ue Wo Muite Arukou, or as we knew it in the west: "Sukiyaki" apparently had such an impact that it became its own word with a new meaning. The lyrics in the Scandinavian versions sing about love over in the land of the sunrise and mentions cherry blossoms, and how they remember "Sukiyaki."
While it probably sounds strange, since ya know... sukiyaki is a dish... x,D it's still nice to hear a translated version making a tribute to its own original self.

I think it's sad how people don't see the irony in Ue o Muite Arukō being named Sukiyaki in the western hemisphere and at the complaining about how she references a beef stew. She never once references Sukiyaki as a beef stew, but as its own self, a tribute. But I guess if Sissel had just named the song "Kjøttbolle" (Norwegian for meatballs), all of you would have been quiet and happy.
The irony is really strong in this one, people even complain in their own language. I know a lot of translators are not precis, but luckily some good people have translated the text into English so you might analyze and understand what the song actually is about. She is not just speaking jibberish, its a tribute to Ue o Muite Arukō and Sakamoto, she is actually singing about the original Japanese song -> in Norwegian -> in front of Norwegians who remember the song as titled, "sukiyaki". Jeeeez

It is best not to no these lyrics ... they are a travesty of the original Ue Wo Muite Arukou. She basically singing about a beef hot pot stew and not lost love or cause as was in the Japanese story.

@@jrgenskarstein8446 the original song was not about beef hot pot but about remorse...it was the title that was famously rendered in Japanese as the English equivalent of beef hot pot. A Taste of Honey then had the lyrics rewritten as a love song / folk song ... which was closer to the original Lyrics. But not quite as a direct translation is not possible. And yes, I don’t speak Norwegian, but can hear what she is singing - a mix of Norwegian, Japanese and English. And Sissile sings a unique rendition which refers to sukiyaki which is a Japanese word for beef hot pot stew.
The original title is Ue o Muite Arukou" which is generally translated as "I look up when I walk" although more correctly as “Lift up your head and walk”. I do know a little Japanese.
So I contend my original assertion is correct; this is not the Original Japanese lyrics. It is a Westernised version crafted as a folk song with the inclusion of the term Sukiyaki in a nonsensical way.
This is not unusual as Ue o Muite Arukou has been rendered into Latin and Germanic languages in various renditions; none embracing the original lyrics as it is a challenging story, and translations and just that - not a direct transposition

@@russellmiles2861 The irony here is so strong, do you even try to understand? First of all, there is no English in the song, no mix. It's only Norwegian. When she sings "sukiyaki" she does not sing it as a translation or as beef stew but is simply referring to the song's name, which after all was sukiyaki in the west. This song is a tribute, the song is a meta-song, it refers to the original song, "the tones of the country of the sunrise", kinda hard to argue on a level you can understand (not meant as considering) all the time you clearly don't understand Norwegian. For me this is as ironic it can be and a "sukiaki" all over again. Foreigners that clearly don't understand the intention of the lyrics and make short cuts.
A really stupid but maybe easy translation of the whole song in a couple of sentences would be something like this: "Oh, you remember these tones right? It reminds me about Japan, what a wonderful country, sukiyaki we (the people in Norway) called the song, i remember it. We fell in love with it and turn the volume up whenever we got the chance". This is a really stupid translation because the lyrics are beautiful, but you get the point, no beef stew here, only a meta reference. For the record my translation is not even near a direct translation but just a summary where I try to transfer the mode in too English so you can get a hand of the context.
So there is no English, no beef stew, and the only Japanese word in the lyrics is indeed sukiyaki, but not as a reference to beef stew or just jabbaring some Japanese, its a reference to the western titled used for the song in Norway.
