    My mother plant produced two pups for me when she flowered...her flower died but leaves were still green and pups were a good size so I repotted them...they are doing great and are a hefty size now (can't wait for their flower, for now they just keep growing leaves back to back from the inside)...I kept my mother plant though she has her dead flower on top, her leaves are long and green...Well, it's summer of 2024 and I have THREE new pups she is growing now 🌹🌹🌹❤️...long story short, do NOT throw them away

    THANK YOU so much for actually telling how much water to use! I've been struggling with keeping my plants alive, and I feel like it's always because of the water..but I can never get it right, either too wet or too dry! I think what I need to really do is water them much less at a time, but more often. Just got one of the beautiful red Bromeliads, and I'm excited to care for it and enjoy it! Donna I mostly grow broms outdoors so I like to hear how people do it indoors. From what I know of outdoor cultivation I can tell you they do like having water in their cups, and they do like moist roots. They don't want tap water with chlorine in it, that is likely what causes the rotting for most people. So either leave your tap water out for 72 hours for the chlorine to evaporate or use rain water. Outdoors they can just stay full of water, but indoors it's probably a good idea to dump them and replace the water every week or so to keep it from getting funky. Morning sunlight is ok for the varieties you're showing here.

      Hello Donna I've had a bromeliad plant for a couple of years now but since I didn't know how to take care of it it's not doing very well. Once the flower died I thought it would flower again but someone told me to cut it off at the base which I did. Which part of the plant is the mother? The flower? Once the flower dies and the pups grow to size, is the original Planet done with? Do you leave the dried flower on forever? I left the dry flower on for many months until someone told me to cut it. Thank you for showing us your beautiful flowers.

      @@mhern57 after the flower dies it's best to remove it. Then the pups will grow. Once they stop just remove the pups and toss the plant. It will actually start turning brown when it is dying. :)

    I knew it!!!! I just bought 3 of these beautiful plants that were in a shallow, small pot, and the directions say to water the cup of the plant. I was thinking, "That can't be right; if I do that, then its going to end up rotting the leaves/flower, essentially the entire plant!" Sure enough, they should be watered the same way you water any other plant!!!
    They give you those "care instructions" so that you end up kiIIing your plant(s), thus needing to buy more!!!

    Thanks so much!! I rescue all sorts of unwanted half dead plants. Also, I pick up a lot of plants from people who are moving and can’t take them with. I ended up with a bromeliad this evening. She’s root bound. She’s in a 4 inch pot. With Spanish moss stuffed around her. There’s a white flower on her. I actually thought the plant was fake at first. I think the flower has some brown edges because the people left her outside in the sun all day today. Once I got the plant home, I saw it was indeed a real bromeliad. I gave it some water. There’s a pup as well. I thought maybe I need to repot the plant. I suppose I’ll have to remove the pup and pot it up. The Spanish moss I’ll be trying to save as well. Is there any specific soil they like? What’s the best size pots? I assume this is a plant that might have been given as a gift and it came from a big box store. Thanks!!!

    • @DonnaJoshi
      @DonnaJoshi  Год назад +3

      Bromeliads thrive in fast-draining potting soil that holds moisture but drains well. A mixture of two-thirds peat-based soil and one-third sand is often ideal. You can also use orchid mix, charcoal, or soilless potting mix. :)

      Use a sharp, sterilized knife or scissors to remove your new plant, cutting as close to the mother plant as possible without injuring it. Sometimes there will be an outer leaf shielding the base of the pup. You can gently peel this leaf away to reveal the entire base. Sometimes you will see the babies roots and sometimes not. Don't worry you can still plant it. It does sound like the mother is dead or dying. Just repot the baby or babies. Let me know how it works out.

      The plant itself can produce pups itself even after the mother plant is gone. Be patient it can produce up to 3 years. This is a great time to research and learn as much as you can about removing pups and repotting. You should be fine 🙂

    • @katreenah1000
      @katreenah1000 3 года назад +1

      Don't know if you've found any answers to this yet, but here goes! You will know when it is starting to die as the flower will generally lose colour gradually and the leaves will curl up and become more and more dry and discoloured. Re: no where to plant outside out of direcg sunlight...you can keep them indoors but you can also grow them in the forks of trees! The canopy of the tree may give off enough shade to avoid burning or killing it. There are a few ways to do this, the way I did mine was with sphagnum moss. Soak it and place it all around the roots and lower stem of the plant and to secure, wrap twine or any natural string around it and that should do the trick. It can be a tricky process but keep at it and you'll get it right 😊 to water, you can place in the cup or soak the sphagnum moss, or both...judge how much to use based on how lush and healthy your plant is...they generally need more water when placed outside than inside as they dry out quicker. I hope this helps and I'm sure there are some great videos you could watch on planting bromeliads in trees too 👌🏻

      Could be several reasons. The plant is grown and a bit heavy. Needs to be rotated allow sunlight on each side. The mother plant could be fully grown and beginning to die. If you are seeing pups, or baby plants this could be what is happening. Also, be careful not to overwater. :)
