- Today, we're going to take a look the TJ Schwarz Overland Fixed Blade, a knife that's a great cutting tool, and happens to also have a bunch of other things going for it.
“My idea of Bushcrafting generally involves wax”. Ooooooohhhh, Kelly Clarkson!!!
It took me like 4 seconds but when it registered I was like 🙃
You know, candle wax, to start fires with a bit of fuel. What were YOU thinking?
@@NickShabazz a more Brazilian mindset
@@NickShabazz …the bat logo in your chest hair. My bad
My initial reaction to the shape:
Looks like it would be great in the kitchen.
Nice to see more magnacut getting out into the world. If I camped or RV’d more I’d put this on the short list.
I thought the exact same thing. As soon as he said "Magnacut" my head immediately thought, "This could live under a jeep seat"
"Most of my bushcrafting involves wax" ... always a hoot, Nick! Thanks for the share and the knife.
Magnacut also has the toughness and edge retention of 3V. Dutch Bushcraft Knives tested a knive with this steel and said it's going to revolutionize the knife world. Can say I like this design alot as well.
So make one bigger than a kitchen knife for Bushcraft and test it out..
I had to skip to the end to see if we'd get a Spaceballs reference. Thank you, Nick. You delivered.
He crushed it on the micarta. Looks like a great blade overall! Way to go dude in Idaho!
Yeah nice, modern design! Love the micarta handles and the chef knife appearance.
I still say TJ Schwartz sounds like a men's mid-range clothing line.
“More jimps per inch” I’m stealing that 😂
Getting this knife tomorrow. Took the summer off to camp and am planing to use this as my primary. The one thing I know I won’t like is the jimping. On a fixed blade I prefer the spine to be smooth with 90-degree angle for fire starting. I’m looking forward to putting it through its paces.
How's your Summer? Where ya camping? I like the Kaibab and Montana
@@ssunfish I just returned from the Southwest. Did desert camping. Was great but got really frick’n hit. I’m now back in Alaska enjoying the cooler weather.
I've been dying to get one of these since TJ started them. He's doing amazing work, and his RUclips videos are fun to learn a bit about the stuff behind it if that interests you. I had no idea how thin the handle was on this knife and I actually love that profile. I'm gonna have to check one out
This one looks awesome love the lines and blade shape
I really hope this knife is ushering in a resurgence of the "tactical kitchen knife" genre from 15 or so years ago.
What, TOPS Knives Paysaten Lite Traveller??
LOL tactical steak knife also from TOPS
Actually, that price kinda knocked my socks off, I really want one! The knuckle clearance is one of the reasons I really like the CRKT folder. I do think it would be a nearly perfect knife, if it were 1-1.5" shorter in overall length. I typically don't EDC a fixed blade over 7,5 ", but Im always willing to make exceptions for something truly excellent, and this is one I must have
Hey Nick! Thank you for downplaying the Magnacut. It’s the first time I’ve seen a RUclipsr really bring it down to earth. Yes I’m sure it’s as hype as they say it is, but it’s not a lightsaber. I’m an equipment operator and I use my knives fairly frequently, and I NEVER have dulled them to a point of no return. Thank you for keeping it real, it would have been so easy to just “flex” and show off your magnacut fixed blade. You’re The Godfather of reviews for a reason.
He's the grandson, nutnfancy is the Godfather!
@@itsme5279
You'd have to live in a pretty small bubble to actually believe this.
@@CNYKnifeNerd you must have just got into the knife community, Nutnfancy was doing it way before Nick, every reviewer has learned from him! Bye Karen🤣
@@CNYKnifeNerd
🤦♂️🤣
You're a newby to the RUclips gear reviewer realm. Nutnfancy has been around for quite some time, and with WAY more practical experience with gear than these tabletop urban/suburban reviewers.
@TheScotchaholic for 99% of the knives Nick reviews the whole outdoors experience thing is a moot point. He mostly reviews small, slicey folders. Not battoning territory.
I love it. It reminds me of the McKenna (a great knife I finally picked up) but obviously larger and fixed.
Looks like a good camp knife cooking and cutting
Ok now that's very very much in my wheelhouse, and how cool that you can immediately recognize the blade profile as a Schwarz?
G'day Nick, I'm with ya, all in all a great design at a fair price. Only issue for me is those narrow scales, but it is only 6 screws away from more chunkitude. Cheers Duke.
choil and thin scales don't make it ideal for bushcraft. wish it had a thicker handle.
Any fixed blade coming from the designer of the Koenig Arius has to be good great. Yes, TJ designed one of the most epic folders ever created (typed this before you said it 🤷🏻♂️). Both of his current fixed blades, this and the Confidante, are great edc fixed blade designs and he’s using magnacut on both now.
Dangit man, when you said "yeet the sheath off" I about died! Hahaha
Thank you for the video. So glad to see a video review on a fixed blade.
Purely a matter of interest. Does the new steel produce a spark against flint ? Probably not of course 👍
Would love if it were even thinner (2,5mm / 0,1 inches or less?) and the step from the handle to the blade was one continous step, like a itchen/chef's knife. But it does seem like an amazing knife nonetheless. CPM Magnacut too. That stuff seems to be amazing too.
I think he should do what you said, make the knife about 50% bigger, polish the blade instead of stonewashing it, and sell it as a kitchen knife. I would probably have to get one.
@@IlliniDog01
Increasing the size and polishing the blade would up the price another $150-200 dollars.
Magnacut steel and pretty polished blades, aren't cheap.
Dig it. Looks great and the form actually has serious benefits.
Hi from France , nice knife , l ´ve. a perpétua. Cool design 👍
Lol. That Factorio reference. FYI, this isn't my first time saying this on somebody's channel, but I noticed I wasn't subscribed to you. I think RUclips is auto-unsubscribing me to channels. I still remember and follow you from your other folding knife review videos from several years ago. Thanks for reviewing the Overland--I was also really curious what your thoughts were on other MagnaCut steel knives like the Creely Folklore or Bradford Guardian 3 (or other equivalent full tang).
Dear lord, is that the fixed blade spydiechef i have been waiting for???
You really made me laugh!
The only > 20” reviews in Shabazz’s library…entitled “Quick”
Looks like a good kitchen knife!
I knew you were into crafting your own bush!
I've been tempted to pull the trigger on one multiple times, but I just don't have much reason to carry a fixed blade.
I on the other hand am oriented to fixed blades!!!
Lol, smooooth bushcrafting joke
Luv that design
It's a great design. Fyi the strongest folding knife is Demkos Triad Lock. After that may be Joe Caswell's EDX
Really love the shape of this knife. I don't really need the super high end steel though. Does anyone have a recommendation?
Why not look at TOPS Knives Paysaten Lite Traveller? What's wrong with extra? Might become your best knife!
That would be interesting on a production level
CRKT DOES a factory/ production version.
@@ssunfish in a fixed blade?
Cool video thanks.
the material between the scales is called the tang
Very much like TJ's work.
It should come with a basic sheath as part of the price.
But this way you can save on the sheath , give his dad some business and if you're a skinbender or kydex maker you got a good situation!
I'd appreciate links to your reviews of the knives you compared this knife to in this video. Spiderco, for instance, offering very nice sheath and I wondered how good or bad is its steel.
yo bro. you should do a disassembly video on the Kershaw Strata XL. would be sick
Any plans to review the folding version? I'd miss the generous choil, but I'm curious about it.
How about tactical batoning in San Diego?, by the way i bought my first fixed blade a few days ago, it's the Ka-Bar USSF space bar. i tought why not start with a oldtimey one( with a modern twist ) first. are you going to review one of those too?
I read that Magnacut is brittle relatively anyway. Makes sense for a hard knife that keeps its edge but that would seem a negative for bushcrafting. Wouldn’t want to beat it with a wooden mallet to make kindling. Great kitchen work knife
Magnacut is definitely not brittle. Its toughness relative to other stainless steels is one of its main selling points, if not *the* main one. It's basically a super-stainless CPM Cruwear.
CPM Magnacut gives a balance of toughness and edge holding WITH corrosion resistance that not any other alloy offers. Yes there's more of any characteristics, but to have the most possible on one knife is the balanced approach!
Hey, can you do a review on spyderco's hungarian folder?
I haven't played factorio in like 8 years
nice man
Hey Nick, are you going to take a watch apart on camera one day?
Hey Nick, what are the potential downsides to having the cutting edge more in line with your knuckles on a knife like this? Compared to a knife where your knuckles typically sits below the edge
This is more suited to kitchen work and food prep like a chefs knife. You can rock it and chop efficiently with your knuckles higher. Like a spydiechef or a Liong Mah KUF.
@@jagpilotohio that makes sense for sure, is there a reason you wouldn’t want it though in an edc?
@@slalomnorth folders will tend to carry wider to accommodate the shape and having the handle more aligned with the blade tends to be more useful and comfortable for daily cutting tasks. Everything is a trade off. Better for one thing, not as good for another. A bit like guns. Smaller and lighter is easier to carry and conceal but harder to shoot quickly and accurately.
@@slalomnorth
The Maxace Babylon has a really similar overall profile and is probably in the top 10 knives I've carried, speaking purely about it's utility.
The separate price for the sheath killed this for me.
Unless you already have the equipment, you can't make one for cheaper.
Be honest though, you'd have never bought it even if it was $250 and came with the sheath so stfu.
@@CNYKnifeNerd I will not STFU . I will have my opinion . You know nothing about what I will buy and why I will buy it.
It looks like it belongs in the kitchen knife block
Are those corby bolts?
Love the look of this design.. hey Nick have you seen the Vosteed Nightshade?
So, would you call it a mid-tech?
Love the accent....just wanna hear..I walk and I twalk and I drink kwoffee...😅
Sometimes you gotta just yeet the sheath.
Could another word for Bush Crafter be Shrub Concocter???
Of course Nick plays Factorio lmao
Yo. How about saving everyone a lot of time by announcing the price at the beginning of your presentation ??
That would be truly great ! Thanks.
He did!
'bushcraft'... 'wax'... LOL! And... 'May The Schwartz Be Wit' Yoo'!
In terms of fixed blades buddy. No its not that big. Of course comparing it to spyderco and folders of course its big because its a fixed. But in terms of a fixed blad and bushcrafting. Its actually thin and smaller than a bunch of bushcrafting knives. You also sound like Barry Kripke from Big Bang Theory. Using your thumb does make it easier and safer than just pulling the knife out. So its not a con. I prefer more people do that for safety reasons even if pulling the knife out is easier on other knives.
I wonder what, then, you have to say about bushWHACKING?
oooooooooooooooooooo
BUSH CRAFTING WITH WAX? DREAMER, STAY OUTTA THE SUN
