- Hello everybody!
In this video I'll be setting up a small paludarium for my Alpine newts (Ichthyosaura alpestris).
Paludariums tend to scare alot of keepers due to their complicated setup but with this step by step tutorial showing you one of the simpler ways of setting up a paludarium anyone can do it!
Thanks for watching!

Great video, awesome build, adorable newts. Doesn’t get much better than that 😍 Well done!
Thank you!! It was fun working on this one. And thank you for watching Kayla!!
Cool build! Totally do-able, Thank you! And such little cuties 😍😍
Thank you!! Let me know if you try it out! The Newts are little cuties indeed 😍
I'd love a newt care guide! Great vid!
I can do that!! And thank you!
This build came out awesome! It gave me some great ideas.
Thanks for watching Casey!! If you end up setting one up I'd love to see it!
@@daffysreptiles absolutely
cool enclosure, adorable newts
Thank you & I agree!!
Thats how you teach em 🔥🔥🔥🔥
😉😂
Thank you for this video it was very interesting!
Thank you for watching!!
Jealous! My area is too hot to keep newts, I embed up getting some firebelly toads for my paludarium instead. Would still love to have some one day, especially kaiser newts. Great build btw!
Thank you! Where are you based? Maybe there's a good way to cool down the water enough to keep them? I'd love some kaiser newts one day too!!
@@daffysreptiles I'm in Central California, the weather easily reaches tripple digits in the spring, summer, and early fall. Even with AC, my home gets around 75-80°F, way too hot for most newts which need 60°F or lower. I could get a chiller, but I haven't found one both reliable and affordable at the moment. Either one day I'll be able to get a reliable, high quality chiller, or I'll move somewhere with a nicer climate. For now though, it's unfair for me to try and keep newts when my climate itself would actively harm them. The toads are still loveable amd fun though, and they're making use of each inch in the 40g paludarium i built, intended initially for newts.
@@thechickenwizard8172 Ahh yea that makes sense! Ive heard the chiller from the company Iceprobe can be pretty reliable but im not sure what the cost on it is! Both ways its always nice to see keepers think of these things in advance and keeping the requirements of the animals before their own!! And I agree fire bellied toads are awesome and sadly not as commonly seen as they used to be!
A fan over the tank can help lower temps; also, blue tailed firebelly newts are the most heat tolerant of newts (though challenging to find a breeder)
Fire belly newts are okay in warm climates. You can buy a cooler that works the same way as a heater 😊
Nice build bro! 👌🏼
Thank you homie!
Would the exact same thing work for a croc skink ?
I assume a similar concept with a larger land area/ smaller water area would work but I’ve never kept croc skinks so I’m not sure!
@reptiliatus what do you think?
These beautiful newts are native to Germany where I grew up and live. As a kid I used to find them in ponds and ditches, I once even accidentally brought some eggs to my aquarium with aquatic plants I had collected. I don't see them nearly as often these days, amphibian species in Europe have been hit hard by chitrid and habitat destruction.
I agree, incredibly beautiful newts especially in their breeding season! That’s super sad to hear, I’ve heard many people say the same thing about other amphibian species aswell.
very cool build i cant wait to get my own newts
Thank you! The newts are lots of fun to keep!
🤘 nice!
Thank you Dan!!
Cool build!
Thank you!!
Omg they are so smol
Very smol. And that’s pretty much full grown!!
Where do you get the glass cut at
This piece was cut by a friend but you can get it done at most glass stores!
Hi ya, love your video and set up! I was wondering what you ceed your little guys? Also how often do you clean out the water side? Do you do a full water change or only part? Also do you alternate filter clean out with water change? I have more experience with aquariums than newts so was wondering if it is the same? Any help much appreciated 😊
Hey! Thanks for watching!
I feed them a mix of next pellets by zoomed and frozen fish food like frozen brine shrimp & blood worms!
For water changes I treat it exactly like an aquarium and do a 10% water change every week! I only have a sponge filter in there that I rinse out around every 4/5 months!
Hope that was helpful! Please let me know if you have any other questions! 😊
Hi I was wondering how much money the whole thing costs beside the tank?
Hello! That will depend largely on how much materials cost where you are from! I think it probably cost me around 100$ without the tank or the newts Ofcourse!
Hope that’s helpful! 😊
Where did you get this tank?
Just a regular 10 gallon from my local fish store!
I did one similar for my African bullfrog
That’s awesome!!
Isn't 10 too small for two newts?
They’re not a very big species! They’ve been doing well in here for a while now but ofcourse bigger is always better!
hhh, I guess only problem in the future will be the black soil in the white sand will make it not that easy clean🤣
It’s been a couple of weeks since I set it up and it hasn’t happened yet but I’m definitely expecting it to 😂 shoulda used darker sand 😅
@@daffysreptiles hhhh
dude, this video is awesome!
Thank you for watching bro!!
can you make a list of all the materials minus the tank?
- Glass for separator 12$ (depending on where you get your glass cut)
- Window screen mesh (full roll is 18$ you probably need 1-2$ worth)
- Hydroballs (full bag 40$ you probably need 2-3$ worth)
- Substrate (hard to judge but probably around 15$)
- Sand (12$ Carib sea bag)
- Sponge filter (5-10$)
- Airline tubing (~1$)
- Pump for sponge filter (12-15$)
- Plastic tube for drainage (taken off an old sponge filter)
- Leaf litter (5$ ish)
- Cork and branches for hardscape (20-30$)
- Terrestrial & aquatic plants (5-10$)
Obviously this isn’t exact since it’s been a whole but this is the rough list of supplies & prices! (Everything is in CAD$)
Hope this is helpful, let me know if you have any other questions!
Where did u buy the newts?
A local breeder here in Ottawa!
They dont need a land section to be honest, alpines can be kept fully aquatic, you might want to get a male for those 2 females
In my experience it’s better to have the land section! Mine will use both the land and the water section fairly frequently!
Also that wasn’t two females I have a male female pair and already seeing some breeding behavior! Fingers crossed I see some eggs soon!! 🤞🏻
What an awesome set up! I love newts and salamanders. They're so adorable!if I'm not mistaken newts are primarily aquatic and salamanders are more terrestrial?
Thank you very much! And yes you are correct! But certain species of newts will spend a lot of their time on land and a lot of salamanders will go to the water around breeding time!
Sir I have a questions:
Can they be housed with fish and if they can which kind of fish?
How many in a 10 gallon
Do they like hard water?
Does the water needs to be cycled?
Can the substrate of the water be gravel?
Also very informative video sir
They can be housed with fish but the fish may get eaten! I’d probably start off with something like endlers to be safe! I’ve also kept them with neocaridina shrimp but a few of the shrimp definitely got eaten.
I probably wouldn’t do more than 2 in a 10 gallon & in fact if you can go bigger than 10 gallons definitely do it they use all the space you give them!
Water hardness doesn’t seem to matter with this species as much as other newt species that being said they are super hardy and can probably handle slightly harder water.
I would definitely recommend a cycled aquarium! And no I prefer not to use gravel as they can accidentally eat some and it can cause impaction!
Thanks for watching & let me know if you have anymore questions!
@@daffysreptiles thank you sir! Also what do they eat? Google doesn’t seem to have much info on them and what silicone did you use?
I love you're set up, I'm fixing to be getting into newts. What all can be housed with a Newt.. Google doesn't really know anything about newts or doesn't give much info.
Thank you! I’ve had success keeping smaller fish like endlers or smaller killifish like rainbow killis with them. I’ve also had lots of success with Neocaridina shrimp! But I think something important to remember is that the newts can and will probably try to eat the fish and shrimp, in my experience they just haven’t been fast or lucky enough.
Let me know if you have any other questions!!
instead of waiting for your filter to sink for a few days, just squeeze it.
Hahaha true that works too!!
U do water change of the enclosure often ?or Keep it like this?
Once every week or two!
What do you do for the lights?
Sorry I probably should have mentioned that! I put the tank next to my other aquariums & I have a 36” Sun-blaster Led hanging above all of them! Far away enough that it won’t produce any extra heat for the newts!
How do u use the drainer tube to take out excess water 😅, I accidentally left my sprinklers on😢
Ahh! That’s not fun I’ve been there 😆
Get airline tubing, put it in the tube then use a syringe on the other end to create suction. The water will start coming out into the bucket you’re draining it into!
@@daffysreptiles thanks I'll try
What do they eat?
On land crickets, mealworms & wax worms! When they’re in the water frozen bloodworms or frozen daphnia!
@@daffysreptiles thank you sir! Ima sub to you on my second account because the account I’m currently using is broken and doesn’t let me sub to ppl this helped so much!
@@LMatRC thank you for the sub!!
@@daffysreptiles Edit:I was able to sub :D
Hi, love the video. Can these newts stay in that 10 gallon forever? Or do you need to upgrade tank size? Thanks
Thanks for watching! For the pair I think a 10 gallon would be okay! I’m planning to upgrade them to a 15 though for sure!
Awesome video🔥
Thank you!! 🙌🏻
Cool build!!
Thank you!
new subs here. from philippines, its getting me interested.for keeping newts, 😅 can i keep newts on 10gal vertical paludarium?
Hey! Thanks for subscribing!
You could definitely do newts in a vertical paludarium as long as they have the ability to climb to the top or else it is just wasted space! You’ll answer need to make sure there is enough water in there for them to swim!
10 gal vertical maybe a little too small surface area wise but also depends on which newt species and how big they are!!
@@daffysreptiles oh ok, thank you brother 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🥰.
