- My first upload! =D The zipper-door to Kyukyu-kun appears randomly (sometimes the knife doesn't work on it, which means the door isn't there), I just happened to get lucky on getting it my first try. :P If you don't find it, wake up and return a few times and it'll eventually be there (the top of the zipper will look different from normal if the door is there).

I don't get why people say that Uboa is the creepiest thing in this game. Uboa is pretty creepy, but THE FACE IS WAY MORE TERRIFYING.
I don't really agree... when I first saw Uboa I got pretty scared... but seeing this thing just made me think "WTF is this damn thing?" (The sound is still very terrifyng) But this is my reaction though...
what scared me the most so far in my play (besides kyukyu) was the octopus balloon in white desert. i kinda hyperventilated when i saw it because i thought it would attack me or something and i wasnt quite used to yume nikki yet

Based on this video is not really that scary tbh, I guess the audio got compressed. This is why people find uboa scarier (besides uboa being more popular and sinister, the evil doer, the face is just traumatic or panicky I guess, like evangelion mind rape)
The first time I shall Uboa was in a youtube channel named gobou and I thought he was cute?
I think Kyu is supposed to represent how certain mundane sounds that happened during traumatic events can trigger those events to play out again in your head. Kyu is smiling, as if hes just making that noise for fun and has no idea what it means to anyone else, which then triggers the terrifying event in the next room, which even causes you to wake up.
That's a really interesting way of looking at it!
The sound he makes is the same sound you hear when washing a window. Makes you wonder what kind of trauma she went through for THAT to be a trigger.

There's no way the sound effect (rubbing on glass) and the main character's name, which refers to windows, are coincidental
I think the face is her fear of what she'll encounter if she leaves her room. Now being cooped up for so long, her dreams are the only way for her to "get out" and interacting with people in the waking world has become scary.

She enters the room by stabbing through a zipper, encounters the monster who is eerily pleased while rubbing either fast or soft depending on Madosuki's mindset (knife out makes kyuukyuu-kun rub faster, cat effect makes him rub slower), and exiting the door which resembles madotsuki's real room door reminds her of some devastating encounter.
It's really disturbing :( FACE terrifies me for a lot of reasons.
I get the feeling that Kyukyu-kun and FACE are the same thing. The more I look at him, the more I feel like he is looking at the door, not the pole.....looking as innocent as he can while waiting for you to come in.....
But if you look closer at KyuuKyuu-Kun's eyes, you'll notice he's strabismic (difficulties pointing both eyes the same way)
I believe FACE is what Madotsuki fear there is outside the Door, FACE represents everything that could go wrong when she goes out, everything that scares her, that's what i think FACE is
as for KyuuKyuu Kun, i believe his the representation of "A wolf in sheep's clothing", a person who seems nice and gentle, when in reality, it's someone bad, evil and that only sees you as a way to benefice themselves in some way

I join the "rape" theory more. for example, she opens the "zipping" door with a knife while blood is pouring out. Kyuu-kyuu-kun is rubbing faster when she is holding a knife (getting aroused) and it slows down more when she is in a cat form. Those things could be very related to that subject.
"The face" then would represent the "happening" itself...
@@graxx2805 Looking that way, you could say that is a reference to Earthbound, since the creator probably loves that game, specifically the Giygas fight which are similar to the flashy apparition of the "Face/Red King" and how Giygas fight is based from Itoi childhood trauma when he accidentally watched a movie in the theather with a rape scene where the man strangle the woman and saw her dead body apart.
This probably disturbed me more than anything else in the game. Not the full screen event so much as Kyukyu Kun himself. I remember trying every single effect I had, planning on stabbing him as a last resort, so when I finally pulled out the knife and it...excited him...yeah. This, the guy on Mars, and the Toringen party were probably my favorite parts of this game. Oh, and Uboa, of course, but Uboa is kind of hard to experience on accident and be surprised by.
While I'm also a big believer in the "rape theory", all the sexual symbols could just as easily be hinting at Madotsuki having a fear or dislike of sex in general. She could be asexual and sex-repulsed. She could have serious anxiety about having sex in the future. She could have seen something as a child that screwed up her view of sex. And so on and so on.
I love how much of this game can be interpreted in different ways. For example, do I think Kyukyu-kun looks like a penis? Kiiiiinda. But he looks like a penis someone who has never seen a penis would draw. I mean, the monsters that look like uterus's are (relatively) accurate and you can't even SEE those from the outside. Compare that to, for example, "Tricky Rick" in LISA (the First). He clearly gives off the vibe of a dirty, violating penis. Kyukyu-kun is creepy, but in a somewhat cute way. It's almost as if Madotsuki's mind is trying to make the idea of sex (or sexual acts or organs or whatever) less terrifying and more approachable. But then she opens the door and all that anxiety and fear comes back like a sucker punch to the stomach. But that's just one interpretation.
***** I'm well aware of all that. I was just talking about this one example and one view of it. The rape theory is the most popular theory for Yume Nikki, so I'm not sure why you're reiterating it...

@FlankoBackup A lot of people say that it's connected to KyuuKyuu-Kun, who is thought to represent Madotsuki remembering some sort of sexual assault; FACE represents either the face of the rapist, or the head of his penis.
The first thing I thought of when I saw the sequence, though, is sleep paralysis. I suffered from them a lot as a child, and I'd see "displays" that were a lot like this, with an awful sound, and not be able to wake up. Kind of like how the player can't skip this cutscene.
That is so bad. Can't possibly imagine how traumatizing it must be to experience a case of sleep paralysis (no wonder some folklore included demons as living beings in the past). How do you learn to cope with that? Can the tendency go away when you get older? (which you must be able to reflect on 6 years later, heh)
this comment made me remember a sleep paralysis like event that happened to me as a kid, i was able to move my head so i was either looking at a space poster i had or looking at the door to my room and the only things i remember seeing are the poster looking distorted because of the darkness, weird transparent bugs flying into my face when i looked towards the door, and maybe the face of a young woman? i dont really remember the last one that well
This game has always freaked me out the most. And I think I finally know why. O-O it's because you truly don't know that the creator means, so you have to guess, as well as this game is so abstract to the point were it becomes realistic
If you look closely you can see that Kyu doesn't react with any effect (this is programed at this way) Kyu just react when Madotsuki up or down the stairs, grabbing more the handrail, like she's going to fall. Also, if you pay attention, you will see that the same door which takes you to the face is the same one that is in madotsuki's room, one that she refuses to open.
Kyu maybe is more like a fear to suicide or falling, and face is the fear to get out, but.... well... that's the explanation I have for this.
Kyu does react to effects, he rubs the stair handle faster if you use the Knife effect, and rubs it slower if you use the Cat effect.
No. it isn't, It's really easy to notice by your eyes, but you don't believe you can just open the game with rpg maker. I didn't believe that too, but there's no value about the effects.
Drigon Araki if you open the game and go to the map and do right click you can see the event, kyu's hand can have like 2 speeds one is get stationed (when Madotsuki is walking) and speed 8 (when Madotsuki stops)

Woorhies I'm sorry I don't understand russian but the translator made something for me. I hope you understand this. Currently it's true that kyu has some weird shape, but also it has the worms in neon world. but if you think well... that's the point of putting that detail in the handrail? why it happens in a stairs, the object that madotsuki uses to kill herself? also the face event seems to be like rorschach test. like kikiyama is more telling us that madotsuki is not really sure about what fears to reject to get out or she is that scared and not even can think clearly
To cope with being scared of something, make a ton of jokes about the thing that scares you, making you laugh. When you encounter said thing, the connection should kick in and it'll take a comedic effect.

R. Fen It's so weird. Sometimes, I'll have vivid dreams of worlds I've never even heard of before, and a couple years later I'll pick up a game and say "hmm... this looks kinda familiar." I'll realize slowly that it's that game from my dream. Happened with Banjo Kazooie when I was young, and when I heard of it years later and played it I got freaked out.
One time I had a dream that had a monster that had a monster that looked like the hunter from monstrum a few months before finding out about the game. And I mean, these two monsters look EXACTLY the same
I once Dreamed with something very similar to the White Dessert in Yume Nikki, and when i saw it in the game, it was like a memory was trying to appear, when i finally remembered... i was just like: "OmfLOL"
I have this happen often too! And sometimes with places or events that happen later to me (not deja vu, I keep a dream diary). I think maybe some kinds of memories can work in reverse.

As soon as I see Kyuu-Kyuui I immediately feel this huge sense of foreboding and dread idk why
The more I look into the details, the less I buy into all the supposed sexual themes in this game. Number World heavily emphasizes violence (with the stabbing room, guillotine world, etc.), and Kyuukyuu visibly resembles the blood coming out of the zipper you have to stab to get here and the bleeding zipper that goes to guillotine world. Kyuukyuu rubs the rail faster when you equip the knife as if it's scared of you, and rubs it slower with the cat effect (which is the non-violent alternative to the knife). You don't have to kill anything to beat the game, but you can be as violent as possible without suffering any serious consequences (the only NPC who retaliates is the Toriningen). FACE is the exception. You're punished for getting here using the knife
I also don't think the door here represents Madotsuki leaving her room in the real world. If you notice, the background of the hallway has the same pattern as the Nexus. In the Nexus, you can go through her door to get back to her room. I think what's happening here is that Madotsuki is trying to get back to her dream room thinking she'll suffer no consequences for this violence
Now that I look at it, the "zipper" almost looks like a spine instead, so maybe we were just dirty minded the whole time lol

Hey guys. What if the zipper door represents her hymen? This makes KyuKyu-Kun a person who possibly raped her. When she saw him waiting for her outside he seemed friendly enough altough rubbing somewhere inapropriate. And when the actual rape happens, the FACE is probably what she saw.
It's the only symbolic thing i can think of when a zipper is pierced open in blood as it is in this game.

The only thing that's missing is some random skater dropping in from out of nowhere and doing a grind trick on the rail, ollie-ing off just as he approaches Asoaso (rub rub in Parolian) and vanishing off the bottom of the screen. That would be too perfect, lolz
But that looks much like a face to me, and more like a glowing apparatus of some sort. The center has an inverted pentagram shape, if you look closely enough. Not that it means anything, but...

I have dreams that look like Yume Nikki all the time. They are random and uncanny, and they give me the same eery feeling that I have when I play the game.
I think that, just like there are pilot simulators, that allow for people that aren't pilots to experience the sensation of piloting a plane, Yume Nikki is a dream simulator, that allows for people that don't have this kind of dream or that don't remember their dreams to experience what it's like.
The stuff that happens in Yume Nikki looks random, meaningless, and confusing because they ARE meaningless. Yume Nikki is a dream simulator, and dreams don't have meanings; they just happen. People should quit procurar pelo em ovo.

@@theSkin_of_a_Killer_Bella well basically dreams are noise that's generated by the brain so they could have a meaning (your subconcious trying to convey a message) or they could just be random image and thought collages from stuff you saw during the day.

I know this isn't exactly the place to discuss theories on the game, but I always thought that Kyukyu-kun was somebody who raped Madotsuki, maybe when she was out for a walk in a dark alley or something (smart). She just walked past him, barely noticing him. Then he did the aforementioned deed. The FACE represents Madotsuki's twisted memory of the man's face during the event, with big, uh, hungry eyes and a twisted grin.
But that's just me.
@VlcakStalker Oh, I agree! That's just the theory that gets tossed around about it the most. For people trying to understand it, it's probably the most logical theory floating about.
Personally, I stick to the idea that it's Madotsuki having a startling sort of vision or nightmare as she's "stuck" in her dreamstate (I used to experience similar things all the time!). Dreams affect her sleeping patterns, as we saw with the Witches Flight event where she falls out of bed. :)

Well, trigger warning.
For a long time, i couldn't remember the face of the person that did r@ped me. I only could feel that something was wrong... It hurted me, i got many hallucinations on my childhood because of this violence, in my vision, Madotsuki is dealing with such things. I got many triggers while playing this game, I aways cry in fear when I come to see the "Kyu Kyu" creature, and get paralyzed with the face.... Because isn't the face in fact, is the realization that it wasn't a bad dream.... That what happened to me, and probably to Madotsuki was real. The face isn't about who is doing it, but what the victim feels like for getting in such vulnerable situation.... My "theory" is only based on my personal experience and other stuff. Also, in my opinion, r@pe wasn't the only reason for Madotsuki end, but all the other stuff like bullying, isolation, and many other things attached in game.

The still frames from FACE sequence are even more grisly than the animation. At least it did not pop up all of a sudden.
Multiple things happened, that's for sure, but the rape was the worst.

I’ve made a little script of how to adapt this event into an interesting “movie scene” but I don’t think i will ever have time to animate it, so i’ll share it here, if it ever inspires you feel free to animate it or edit it however you find creatively suits you, but here goes
Madotsuki enters the corridor that leads to kyuukyuu-kun, she puts away her knife but there is still some blood from the groaning zipper door, suddenly the blood on her hands is dry already and she is breathing puffs of warm air, this corridor is cold and cruel, a sign of bad things to come
Madotsuki walks along the corridor, until she sees kyuukyuu-kun a glowing pillar of goo trapping flowing abstract lights inside it, he is looking directly at her and smiling, but she is not phased by him.. he looks down at her bloody hands and rubs the railing, *rub*.. *rub*.. and then he stops.. Madotsuki feels either guilt or embarrassment, guilted of her violent tendencies she tenses up and she fast-walks up the stairs, but kyuukyuu-kun grows taller and keeps up behind her.
Once she is at the top of the stairs, she looks back at him with furrowed brows and and fast, heavy breathing chest.. she is now extremely uneasy, but the silence is broken when kyuukyuu-kun makes a cute noise from it’s mouth, madotsuki, caught off-guard thinks “maybe he’s just friendly” she looks at him trying to understand what he’s trying to communicate.. he glides closer to her and the door
He opens it for her and gently tries nudging her in, she backs out a little bit but kyuukyuu-kun morphs another arm from it’s body and trues pushing her more, at this point madotsuki panics and trues to fight back but this “friendly” kyuukyuu-kun just violently shoves her there and she shouts “NO!/DAME!” She opens her eyes for a single frame and they are hollow and black, then suddenly everything is interrupted by the harsh sounds and flashing colors of FACE.
She wakes up with a violent gasp and sweating
The end.
(I made kyuukyuu-kun more of a character because he reperesents so much more than just being a static npc, not to also mention.. he is kinda cute in a creepy way, i like the idea of a madoka-magica charolette character for the yume nikki story, and when it comes to face.. we don’t know what it is exactly, all i can see in the image of FACE js that there is DEFINITELY eyes drawn all over that image, madotsuki is heavily implied to have a fear of eyes, fir some reasons her’s are always closed too. And not to mention we don’t know if FACE even a room or the view from mado’s POV? Having it be vague in the scene is nice, but those are all just my interpretations, i’d love to hear people’s own versions))…..
In place of this door nothing happens when I stab it with the knife, is there anything I can do to get in?

This makes sense about the rape theory!, Ever sense i was little Kyuu Kyuu Kun made me feel Unsafe and "Awkward" Because he is just rubbing a pole and nothing else is making noise!, and being a little girl i would not understand why this guy made me feel unsafe because i never heard of Rape before. Know a days i despise having a uterus and im disgusted that i feel people look at me and see a Sex toy. I liked Kyuu Kyuu kun because he was weird like me!, but in a way that is dangerous. my brother does not know about the rape theory and even he (a 19 year old man) Gets uncomftorbale hearing the pole being rubbed.
