  • The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris are seen by many in France as an international triumph and a showcase for the country.
Officials who sold the $6.9bn project to France’s citizens - already $2bn over budget - also promised that it would bring new housing and economic opportunities to blighted neighbourhoods, spruce up Paris, and clean up the polluted water in the Seine - making it possible to swim in the river again for the first time since the 1920s.
But people have lost their homes, neighbourhoods and parks to construction, and many unhoused migrants are being bussed out to more rural areas, while surveillance techniques put in place for Olympics security threaten civil liberties.
As the games approach, People & Power investigates the benefits and costs of the Parisian Olympics.

Subject: Urgent: Reporting Student Torture During Quota Movement in Bangladesh
      Dear Al Jazeera Team,
I hope this message finds you well.
I am writing to bring to your urgent attention a grave incident involving the torture of students by the Bangladesh government during the recent quota movement. Attached to this email is an image showing the injuries sustained by one of the students as a result of this brutality.
The students were peacefully protesting against the government's quota system when they were subjected to severe violence by the authorities. This unwarranted aggression has left many injured and traumatized, and it is imperative that the international community is made aware of these human rights violations. We are seeking your support in shedding light on this situation and bringing global attention to the plight of these students. Your coverage can play a crucial role in pressuring the authorities to take action against those responsible and ensure the safety and rights of the students.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your response.
      Best regards,

Without even watching this segment, I will throw a bit of "whataboutism", and ask: Was the Qatar Football World Cup in 2022 worth it? The death of 100+ workers building 7 completely new stadiums used today at about 10% of their capacity?

I have enjoyed some quality documentary from this channel in the past. This report seems bias, every Olympic cities faced such challenges before, environment, housing, budget etc. France requested 4 foreign country police foreces from UK, Spain, Germany and Qatar for the Olympic security. It'll be nice to see report from that prospective.
Have this channel show us how the Doha world cup stadium was built by cheap labor under the heat? Snd how they were mistreated?

1st : there is that much migrants in France because the social state is attractive. No worries. 2nd : the bottom line of the video is that french people should refrain from organizing Olympics - through modernization of the poorest places - because non-french, or "recently french people", are not happy with the works and changes. In which reasonable country do you see migrants imposing their views on locals ? In Qatar maybe, Al Jazeera ? Let's be serious 5 minutes. Showing a little protest of 50 people to pretend there's resentment among the population. I live in Paris and I had to watch Al Jazeera to hear that there's resentment for the first time !

There's a major homeless population there too and I expect the same thing to happen there. It's so sad. It'd be nice if people could at least get jobs and housing to help with the construction instead of just being pushed out. There has to be a better way.
