you are right! I am topping up my chinese by watching Chinese cartoons. It helps me understand the natural flow of chinese speakers, so that when a native speaker talks to me, I can understand and not feel overwhelmed.
My English level was boosted at a higher rate when I started watching RUclips English contents on a daily basis. Immense input and practicing, to me, is the only way to improve language proficiency.
Absolutely. Everyone asks me "how do you speak English so well?!", Well, everything started when I started watching yt videos in English, now I only watch videos in English....
Absolutely agreed , I have been watching only chinese drama for 2 years & on the third year (this year) ,I am able to understand many conversations on c drama ( modern ) without subtitles .
Seems like I've been doing this for the 2-3 years that I have been actually self-learning Chinese! I can totally vow to this method. My parents are Chinese but I grew up outside of China. My mother tongue is Taishanese which is totally different from Mandarin. After moving to the U.S. and seeing that so many people here know mandarin and their mother tongue (any Chinese dialect) I FELT SO EMBARRASSED I DIDN'T. My cousin introduced me to Hong Kong dramas (Cantonese is similar to Taishanese both come from the same region, Guangdong) but I stirred away into Chinese dramas. I started watching with English subs but then I fell in love with many Chinese actors and well decided to watch their dramas regardless of English subs. Since a year ago, I started to not care if there are subs or not, I will watch it. Now, I can fluently speak to my mom in three different dialects which is AWESOME!
Totally agree, I'm in the reversed situation as you, I'm a Chinese dude who is learning English through consuming tons of American TV shows, RUclips, Twitch and video games, it's fun.
I started watching Chinese dramas which increased my interest in Chinese, then watching RUclips videos, building glossaries and I just finished my first semester of Chinese at a community college and did very well in the class. I’m enrolled in the second half. This year I had planned to travel either to Taiwan or China then the pandemic decided otherwise. There is nothing better than traveling to the country where they speak the language. It’s baptism by fire. When I was learning French, traveling to France and having conversations with French friends increased my understanding of the culture, the institutions, how people really speak, not text book French. I hope next year I’ll be able to travel again. Getting my Covid vaccine in a week or two. I work in healthcare. Hope everyone in the world will also have access to one and we can get somewhat back to normal. Stay safe and keep learning and growing. Never too late to learn. I’m in my 60’s.

@Ronaldo 9 Hahaha, I think everyone speaks pretty fast in their native language! I see your profile picture looks like a Brazilian flag, right? I bet you speak Portuguese super fast! 😂
It was Chinese dramas that got me interested in learning the language in the first place. At 68, I have been learning through both online courses and through watching the programs. At first I thought I would never learn this language but as the time has gone on, I am surprised at how much I know. I am no where near proficiency in the language and am always looking for ways to up my learning. I just find the language so fascinating and have made the learning a part of my daily routine. I just found your RUclips site today and look forward to viewing your videos. I am a far cry from speaking the language comfortably with someone who's mother tongue is Mandarin, however, my comprehension grows stronger each day which is encouraging. Thanks for creating your channel.❤️
I agree with you 100%. Another HUGE thing that helped me get really good with Korean was reading books! Especially books for kids and elementary school students. It’s difficult at first, but once you get through a few books, the basic grammar and structure always remain with you.
As a beginner, I learned 90 percent of my Chinese from your and Xiaoma's food-ordering videos. It was really great to learn the first successes of a difficult language with so much fun. You are great, thank you very much for that! Greetings from Berlin.
thank you so much after watching some of your pervious videos I started to learn the characters and vocabulary through writing too, I now can read and *write* about 260 characters and I am so happy.
How do you remember them? Do you write practice sentences, or make flashcards of the words? I want to try this but always find I forget the words from the day or week before. I haven't mastered keeping old words while learning new ones.
I would also say it's super important to find shows you're interested in watching, even if you have to turn on English subs. Even if you're a beginner (or low intermediate like me) you can still enjoy shows like The Untamed (excellent show btw!), and because you're interested you'll spend more time with it and improve your level
ayyy this is how i learnt chinese mandarin and english growing up. i came from a cantonese speaking family and growing up i immersed myself in a lot of mandarin and english cartoons, as well as cantonese movies. i highly recommend this method over memorising a vocab list. immerse first, memorise second
I love both of your channels! I've learned a lot from both of you, as well as from Xiaoma and Oriental Pearl. I constantly have something playing in Mandarin on my tv or phone. You all have greatly influenced my language learning. Please keep making videos!
海尔兄弟(Haier Brothers)、西游记(Journey to the west / legends of the monkey king anime)、秦时明月(The Legend of Qin (Chinese: 秦时明月; pinyin: qín shí míng yuè), also Qin's Moon)、镇魂街(Rakshasa Street)、全职高手(The King's Avatar)、三国演义(Romance of the Three Kingdoms Chinese history Cartoon)、哪吒传奇(The Legend Of Nezha)、吞噬星空(tūn shì xīng kōng)、斗罗大陆(dòu luō dà lù)are great!!! Bon courage!!!......^-^
Hey JJ, this was very useful advice! My target language is Japanese and I’ve been doing a lot of input lately, especially since I’ve been away from my Japanese friends because of graduation. Anime has been great for input (I’ve been watch Card Captor Sakura and it’s been a great show to help out with input) and my goal is to eventually watch anime with Japanese subtitles on only! I also use a language learning program on the side just to help me retain vocabulary. Listening to music in your target is really good for input too! I need to start using Anki more often! I started learning Japanese about 2 years ago and I’ve seen so much growth in myself.
Hi, JJ. I don't know if you actually read comments, but anyway... I'm so grateful to Matt that he let me find him. I stumbled across him a few months ago and I feel it's very possible that it changed my life and I'll probably never turn back to what I was doing in the past. I'm a polyglot and I've been studying Chinese for a few years now. And I suck. I'm subscribed to your channel exactly in order to listen to (high quality) Chinese. But this wasn't the base of my study. My method was veeeeery different. But I applied what Matt recommended and I feel it works so well... I'm very happy for you that you found him too and his advice helped you. Thank you, Matt!
Real Life Language Input! I love it. I've just started using Netflix and I use the Netflix for Languages Extension - the subtitles are a great way to add to your vocabulary. :-) Thank you for continuing to inspire me! Good for your Mum watching Peppa Pig. When I first started learning Mandarin, I used to watch nursery rhymes!
I’m a super beginner at the moment, and I have seen a few shows on Netflix and some cooking channels on the Tube. Just wanted to say thank you for sharing your wisdom!! I’m new to the channel and can’t wait to catch up on all your vids 💜😁
Lovely passion you have and lovely person you are! Thank you for sharing your life adventures with such a joyful enthusiasm!!! It is so encouraging and uplifting!
I love using C-dramas to help me learn, even if they are a bit above my level... two good things about them, one is that they almost always have Mandarin subtitles to go with them (thank you China, very helpful!) and the second is that the desire to understand what's going on is a very good motivator to learn! My favourites are Legend of White Snake and Ashes of Love, but I will definitely be watching Peppa Pig for something a bit more comprehensible! 谢谢雪莲!
Like, the thing, I have been studying Chinese for 5 months and of course I first did some basic stuff like grammar structures etc, but I NEVER actually sat down and memorized vocabulary by heart. Immediately 1 week later I started watching stuff in Chinese, let it be Tv Shows, interviews, whatever. That's the thing why now my listening skills are very good as well as my pronunciation. That's the 1st thing I recommend, be around your target language as often as possible. Every night I spend 2 hours watching Tv shows in Chinese and I have a book where I write down stuff I come across while watching. Now my booklet is full, so I am having a new one. Also, I ask my "language parent" the next day about things I didn't understand the night before, let it be grammar or something else. Now however, because I am better at Chinese than 5 months ago, I started creating vocabulary lists, organized "to do with people - verbs", example 羡慕 or 接。, as well as adjectives or also phrases, such as 有好处,泰然处之,有自信。。and so on. All those are what I have come across in those shows/interviews. What I mean is that, for ME personally, it could not have been any better, because how can one possibly improve faster than when having real life input, analysing it, speaking it, asking about it, just generally devoting oneself completely to the language? Also, instead of a teacher I find it better to have a *language parent* , that way you interact way more and you are having more fun (Just my personal opinion).
JJsay thanks for this app! I'm a Thai-American trying to learn the Thai language, the hardest part of learning the Thai language in US is finding other Thai's to speak with. ขอขอบคุณครับ
I been doing this recently I’ve cut all other languages I’m not fluent in shows to focus on learned Chinese shows (such as meteor garden, take my brother away, wait my youth, the prince who turns into a frog, triad princess and so many others) thanks for all the useful information!!
Something I have found very useful to improve your listening ability and vocabulary is teleshopping. Yes, teleshopping. It is all about describing products/objects and repeating the same words over and over again in no more than 10 minutes. You get to hear different people speaking the same words and short scripted dialogues And you might find something you need and never knew before , too. LOL
Wow! You're amazing! My must-watch C-drama recommendation is Story of Yanxi Palace《延禧攻略》 Aired in 2018 but is still AMAZING no matter what year you're watching in. It's 70 episodes long but it's worth the watch! :) (It also comes with the Chinese subtitles in the RUclips version)
honestly even watching something in your target language with subtitles in your own language can help too, the amount of korean i have picked up just by watching kdramas with english subs is quite big, and im not even trying to learn korean
Thank you so so much for your channel and everything you do! It was a big struggle for me to start remembering my Chinese, I just couldn't find any motivation. And you're a huuge inspiration! Besides, you're so sweet and genuine. In one of your videos you asked about some ideas.. probably you could tell how your mum learned Chinese?
Thank you so much for your advices! I'm learning Mandarin Chinese as my third language and sometimes it gets challenging, is always pleasant to receive help! I study everyday because I have time and actually enjoy it. My routine starts in the morning with some writing, pronunciation tests, lessons, podcast and audio-news with subtitles. During the day I try to use as much vocabulary as possible (for example: when I go to the supermarket I tend to name the things I'm buying) Lately I've been seeing some dramas and it is surprising to notice how they use some words as expressions. Love from México!
I feel like there is a little lang universe in RUclips now! My three favorite lang RUclipsrs, JJ, Anming and Matt know each other 🥺💛 I'm manifesting a collab between you three! 👀 Thank you JJ, the DIY videos is something that I didn't think about, great tip and great vid as always 🥺
around 2017 youtube language content really took off. i don't know why. it wasn't a desert in 2014 but the Chinese language teaching content seems to have at least tripled since then, not an exaggeration. Russian also increased but no where near as much. Idk about other languages.
Omg I’ve been watching “Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom” and “Peppa Pig” in my target language (Italian) for 2 months!!! I love this method and I’m so glad you mentioned it JJ ❤️ Thanks for this awesome video!!!
I love you Jilian, thank you for your tips. I had an intermediate level 3 years ago but because of a lack of practising my level is lower, but anyways it's important to practice and not comparing ourselves to other ppl. 我们加油吧
Thank you so much for creating these helpful videos! It makes me really inspired and motivated to keep learning! One of the first tv-shows I watched in chinese was The Untamed and that made me just fall in love completelly with the language. It's still my main goal to be fluent enough to read the original books in simplified mandarin.
Thank you (: I'm learning Japanese and I've been watching anime for long but want to learn japanese vocab more and going to start watching kid shows more.
Hi thank you for introducing some interesting applications and techniques for memorizing. I just started to learn Chinese as well and found your advise is really helpful.
I definitely know what you mean by a feeling of familiarity with a language even if you don’t understand it. When I was very young, around 3-4, I had Cantonese children’s cassette tapes I would listen to over and over. My dad also taught us enough that I would tell my preschool teacher I need to use the bathroom in Cantonese, even though we were in America. I never got that far in the language since my mom only spoke English and now I’m trying to learn Mandarin and Cantonese, but even though I’m getting more Mandarin than Cantonese, the Cantonese feels more natural sounding.
I don't use Anki, but I use chrome extension goolge translator and read the comments in Facebook and RUclips. I highlight the word and the pop up will tell me the meaning of that word. That's how I accumulate vocabulary
I watch Peppa Pig videos in Mandarin too! It's definitely helping me learn, but now I oink after every three or four words.
My mom made the same joke! Hahaha!
Lmfao
Hahahaha
Hahahahahahahahaa
I tried watching them once but they were too hard for me. 😿😿😂
That's why total immersion works.
Yeah, it's the BEST!
When Xiao Zhan appeared at 2:51, my The Untamed feels just went gaga! Yibo and Zhan is the reason behind my undying desire for learning mandarin...
Haha, yes indeed! Attractive people are always good motivation! 😂

I study everyday because I have time and actually enjoy it.
My routine starts in the morning with some writing, pronunciation tests, lessons, podcast and audio-news with subtitles. During the day I try to use as much vocabulary as possible (for example: when I go to the supermarket I tend to name the things I'm buying)
Lately I've been seeing some dramas and it is surprising to notice how they use some words as expressions.
Love from México!
Thanks for watching! It's so nice to hear you've been enjoying the studying process! Keep up the good work and effort! 👍
Hey JJ, I'm picking up vocabularies by watching your videos, regress and rote memorization in this video, thanks 😊
Hi Ray, that's GREAT! Thanks for your kind comment!
哇欧,雪莲好棒啊!爱了爱了! Excellent!👍❤️🍎
They're both the best- just really great people- intelligent and super friendly. So happy to know them both! 😚💕
around 2017 youtube language content really took off. i don't know why.
it wasn't a desert in 2014 but the Chinese language teaching content seems to have at least tripled since then, not an exaggeration.
I watch a ton of dramas! Must be on the right track.
Recommendation for your mom: 'Let Go Of My Baby' is also a program about little kids. I've been watching it recently and it was really helpful
you're my inspiration !!!
Thanks for this information!
Thank you (: I'm learning Japanese and I've been watching anime for long but want to learn japanese vocab more and going to start watching kid shows more.
Yes, start with something easier and work your way up! 💕
Listening your video today 31 Jan '21...Thanks a lot
So informative! Thanks a lot J J🥰
Thank you so much for watching!
Very good experience . thank you !
I found the best way to learn languages, so easy and fast, without a teacher, I use DUOLINGO, now I'm still learning 8 languages.
I don't use Anki, but I use chrome extension goolge translator and read the comments in Facebook and RUclips.
I highlight the word and the pop up will tell me the meaning of that word. That's how I accumulate vocabulary
