Lucille Bogan - Pot Hound Blues

- Taken from Stash Records 1977 compilation "Weed: A Rare Batch" (ST-107)
Lucille Bogan performs "Pot Hound Blues" with Tampa Red on guitar and Cow Cow Davenport on piano. This was recorded in October of 1928 or May of 1929 - there is some ambiguity on the liner notes of the record. Hope you enjoy!
I asked the Old Blues singer Homesick James when he was 96 years old why peoples dont sing like this anymore. He said "Theres to many Jails and institutions around.Too much controll"
Wow that's super insightful and true
In what city did you talk to him? I worked a Blues Club in Atl in 80 where he sang…
Sitting Bull one said You white men must be lawless. You have so many laws.
@@karend4406Don't think anyone is going to jail singing like this. Homesick must have just said anything. There are people today who sing this style.
Where????
In VERY loving memory of Mrs. Lucille Bogan (1897 - 1948 R.I.P. Gone but NOT forgotten).
She was Awesomeness. When they ask who'd you like to kick it with living or dead Id say Miss Lucille Bogan fa Sho!
Damn...I thought it was Mitch McConnell on the thumbnail
This is a considerably underrated comment.
😉😁😄
LOL.
LMAOo
Wait... It isn't? 🤣
man I've been listening to this chick for the past 20 min and im really diggin her
seriously going to be streaming her more on Spotify cause she is sure as shit on there! This was one of her first songs she ever released I am actually reading a dissertation on her
She's a straight vibe 😂😂
i’ve been listening for so long 😭😂😂
Listen to shave em dry👀
@@Charlesmarcel-ee4ke or til the cows come home 😮
During Prohibition Pot was quite popular.
Still is lol
As for the comments that say it's not about pot...I think it IS and she's saying her man is too lazy because he IS a pothound. You have to listen carefully to the end. Thats what I got out of it anyway.
Couldn’t it be about both? Double entendres were not unusual in blues recordings at that time.
It's like going back in time....I wish I could have met her! What a voice...she's the most expressive singer I think I have ever heard. Why don't people sing like that now?
Autotune
@@matthewatwood8641 you really think they had autotune back then???
@@Unitedstatesgov598 😆
@@Unitedstatesgov598I suspect he is suggesting that autotune is one of the reasons you DON’T hear anyone sing like that now.
@@odietamo9376 he aint
thank you Netflix for introducing me to this gem!! I am in love with this woman!!
right?????
🌟🌟🌟
Netflix?? I found her randomly... what’s on Netflix about her?
@@Kristie2ful If you watch the history of swearwords series on Netflix hosted by Nicolas Cage, I believe the episode about the word “bitch” is where they talk about her I could be wrong on which episode it is but that’s how I found her. This woman is open my eyes to a whole other level of living 🎉🎶💯
@@EvolvementEras this!
Blaze it Gangsta Grandma Classic OG style...
Love her voice.💜
Wow that thumbnail........That's me now still groovin' at 70 !!
Being a true fan of old blues brought me here
Netflix introduced me
I think I love her 😍
You must bring me a job or money from anywhere
You must bring me a job or money from anywhere
'Cause I can get your kind of lovin' in the street just anywhere
You come home every day lookin' for your stew and beans
You come home every day lookin' for your stew and beans
And you have got more nerve than any pot hound1 I've ever seen
Now you take your money, you have your fun
You don't have nothin', when house rent come
And I'm thru, cookin' your stew and beans
And you can eat more neck bones that any man I've ever seen
Now if you want me baby, you got to make your purse show down
If you want me baby make your purse show down
And you got to put your money down where I got mine
Now you're layin' up in my bed, between my two white sheets
I can't see and smell nothin', but your doggone feet
And I'm thru, tryin' to make a man of you
And if you can't bring a job, don't you look for your daily stew
I worked hard from Monday until late Saturday night
And you're a dirty mistreater, you ain't treatin' me right
And I'm thru, cookin' your stew and beans
And you's a dirty pot hound, dirty as any man I've seen
Thank you for the lyrics.
When it says I can't see or smell nothing but your doggone feet, the line isn't actually feet. It's tea, which was slang for marijuana back then.
@@TheTrippersMindTripWhen I first listened to it, it sounded like “feet” to me. Anyway, that is what makes sense-it’s a verse about what she sees and smells between her sheets.
Thank you!
he sure eats more neckbones then i ever seen, love it
Ha! Old lady's smokin' a joint.
i'm 70, been smoking it since 1965,, had my first joint on my 15 th birthday. lol pot has been around forever, the egyptians used it,, dentists used to burn it to calm people down.

And lookin' damn happy doin' it too!😂❤
This songs about cooking pots. Not smoking pot. Either way great song and that album cover is amazing!
Yep, Jesse, we should cook!
Hey,Old folks like a smoke now and then
Kinda sad that it’s not actually a song about pot. Knowing the rest of Bogan’s lyrics this song is actually pretty tame
I believe this is Victoria Spivey and not Lucille Bogan.
Actually, it is a song about pot. It's a song about a stoner, a pot hound was a stoner back in the day.
It's this when she was younger because it doesn't sound like Lucille Bogan when she sings more sexual?
Got to say totally different but 👍 it is great with me in the old days and it is 🔥 with the words and sounds of the blue 💙 just plain awesome with me 👍💯🎶 and words are 💯
She is absolutely wonderful.
I am a regular visitor to the Delta and NaWlins. Still many great musicians, but none as good as the people from 20s to 50s. Snooks, Fess and Ray C were all close.
Kris , Sweden nowadays
this is just fab...love it
Im Venezuelan and i love this woman

I'm pretty sure this is Victoria Spivey. They have very different tones, singing styles and accents. There's nothing official that says this is Bogan. Would be great if something would appear online as this music is so historically precious.
+sweety1009 I'm not particularly familiar with either singer, but I've just listened to two Bogan tunes, then when I put this one on I did think the vocal had a very different tone - I took this to be a recording quality issue but having reading your comment, you could be right.
this is defiantly Victoria Spivey!
Agreed!
It's on lucille bogan list of songs so it must be her
@@deangelopack8405 flawed logic. It's absolutely not Bogan. Their tambours are far different. Just cuz its on a RUclips list means nothing. Also people cover songs of contemporary & previous artists. Always have
A beautiful voice!
☘️🙃 'Tis a Badass Chic!🙃☘️🙃 Oh yeah I love that crackling record as well!!!🙃☘️

Crazy how they couldn't market the black lady on the album tho ....
Yeap Five Heartbeats showed us that in they Movie!!!
Sounds a lot like Victoria Spivey's "Dope Head Blues"
My high school psychology teacher in the 70s brought our father in. He told us about smoking Muggles when he was a kid. The horror story she heard about marijuana we're so horrible he didn't even know it w as the same stuff they used as a kid 2:43 2:57
Que bueno que haya un blues así sobre la Marihuana.

Hello, how are you doing today and the entire family and friends doing today I really enjoy listening to oldies song with mom and dad

I never knew sheep were so musically talented.
WTF you mean by that???
It has been said that every genre of music that was created in these United States is from African Americans. Everything we listen to, and love!
…and yes, WTF!!!
Oh my, Sherry. At least give me a dance first!! LOL. Your comment sent me my own personal daydream, with all inclusive backup dancers, to my head,,,,,"IM SEXY AND I KNOW IT",,,."EH EH, I WORKKKK OUTTTT!!" BWAHAHAHA!!!
... and that's the truth, brother. The world's poorer for it.
I wish we had an elder that was born in the 1900s to give us a little story on smokin back in the 20s while jammin to this and gettin munchies on with sandwiches and bottles of coke
You mean while the women were working?
Oh man...!
What about brownies, you done forgot bout them 🫣
They still call them pothounds around here sometimes. It IS about smoking weed. A pothound is someone too lazy to do anything but get high and eat.
So Lost Highway by Hank Sr commemts are turned off but this is not?? Ok.
mp little green in the dark Bill Green in the dark
Grammas smokin a fatty!😇
Pot smoking stimulates the appetite, but this song is about eating.
More so about a woman being sick and tired of her man, but yeah that's part of it. xD
Like👍👍👍👍👍
Who's the woman in the picture??????????
Ive been trying to write like this but I get shy
Hello I see happiness all around you, can I please share from it?
Take a listen to Del Rey...Maria Muldaur...Rory Block & esp. JoAnn Kelly
When he was 96? You met a 96 year old person, that died when they were 92? Interesting.
possible qu'elle fumait déjà un petard ?
Did yall know it was a legal requirement for new immigrants to go to a minstrel show coming to the US? If you didnt youd have a VERY bad time. Thats how they solidified rascism from other poc against black people. Happy Black History month.🤗
I wonder why Janis Joplin didn't rip this song off. lol
mike patrick ,Too stoned!
Probably because, like the woman in the song, she was hard working, and the song isn't an ode to pot.
Vai Corinthians!
Where's #panda #GODWINS #definewarstupid #WWG1WGAWORLWIDE #LOVE thank u beautiful soul.
Fanfuckingtastic!! Love Lucille. Ms. Bogan recorded under several different names. I could be mistaken. But if it's her. Didn't she get tsken to court for recording vile, lewd, and lascivious language. A little help from You Tube. Thanks for uploading.
Peace.
She looks like a cool chick...Kinburn Canada...
this song is TOTALLY not about marijuana. it's so dumb they put it on that marijuana compilation.
Great work with Tamar Korn! Loving the Brain Cloud and looking forward to seeing her love someday.
I meant live but you know
Arif M. ha Thanks!
Or you just don't know what a pothound is???
😁😁😁😊💃💃💃😍
Why does it say Lucille Bogan yet have the image of a white woman? Was this another artist that sung Lucille Bogan song?

Lucille Bogan is a African American , I'm not sure who that lady is in the pic
they do but you got to look hard for them...people who sing like this don't do it for the money so they wont be heard on the radio.
Who is that a picture of because it sure is not Lucille culture vulture
When the dress makes my wife look fat, although retaining rights to be critical; I choose not.... Does no good. Peace and love to you my friend.
This doesn't sound at all like Lucille Bogan.
It is. Recorded in Chicago 1929. It might be playing too fast.
Might be Victoria Spivey
It’s Victoria Spivey...100% positive. Granny has her old records.. Besides, Lucille doesn’t have the “sheep” vibrato in her voice :)
