  • I created this score using Finale 2009. I made many judgement calls when choosing things like time signatures, but the instrumentation, pitches and articulations match the performance as best as I can hear. I invite comments, analyses and suggestions!
    When things get really busy, a few notes may not be represented on the score. I tried really, REALLY hard to get everything that was audible, but the audio quality isn't perfect, considering that it was recorded in the 1970s, then digitized at 44.1 khz.
    I transcribed this by ear, without a keyboard. I used Audacity to slow down the busiest sections of the music after the scientists begin to take over the conversation. In this section, I believe the recording engineer may have recorded some passages at half-speed, then subsequently remixed it at double speed. The parts aren't impossible, but they're improbably complex and very high throughout.
    Also, partway through, the playback speed for the sound track is increased by a half-step to elicit the strangely subtle modulation. There are a few measures in this passage that were edited out of some cuts of the film, but which remain in others (and possibly on the soundtrack). I have not included them in the score, but some viewers might wonder where they went - I suggest you ask Mr. Spielberg.
    The contabassoon part would normally be notated an octave higher, but considering its migration to the extreme high register (for a contra anyway), I left it in concert pitch. for this video.
    This video is meant for educational purposes only. It is the belief of this author that the video qualifies as an analysis and commentary on the copyrighted material and therefore does not infringe on copyright. Besides, there are tons of direct rips of movie and TV footage on youtube that don't attempt to provide any added insight into the material they 'borrow.'

    The translation of the alien conversation actually goes like this:
    “Doo Pee, doo pee, doo pee, doo pee, doo pee, doo pee, doo!! You’re gonna build a mountain (gonna build a mountain), in your living room (in your living room). Gonna build a mountain (build a mountain), and it’s gonna be keen!!”
    You can see the mailboxes sing this as a barbershop quartet in “Closet Cases of the Nerd Kind.”
    At least, that’s what I heard. 😁
    Hmmm... this means something. They keep saying the same thing! I know what this number is.... it’s Pi. 🤣

    @hotstix12 I ripped the audio from my DVD. Can't tell you exactly what bitrate I chose at this point, but it's nothing fancy. Probably 44Khz, maybe lower. At any rate, it'd be nice to have a really high quality digital copy - it would make the slowed-down playback so much clearer.

    As someone below previously mentioned I would also suggest using the actual track on the soundtrack album as there is no editing and the time changes are more steady and it is easier to hear everything. Also, when the tuba kicks in with those Db quarter notes the tuba also plays those eighth runs that you have notated in the contrabassoon line. So either there were two tuba and two contrabassoons or for time and resource sake, just did a multitrack recording with the same players. Just thoughts.

  • @markfdesimone
    @markfdesimone  13 лет назад +4

    @tubamanRW Yeah man, you're right about those tuba runs. I have it in the back of my mind to redo this video using the soundtrack, but I have way less time on my hands nowadays. Are there big differences between the two? Would it be worth it?

    Yep Ab, the 5 note tune outlines a Abmaj(add9) chord.

  • @StopFear
    @StopFear 3 года назад +1

    This is a cool, memorable, impressive whatever tune. But I think it effective at making people strange and spiritual while watching NOT because if the tune or melody. It is a cinematic music trick so to speak. The composer takes the wind instruments that play very high short notes and contrasts them with the deepest loudest tuba sound (or whatever is the brass instrument that is). That is what makes the listener excited when it alternates fast. I think John Williams and some other composers recycle this method in their films regularly. It’s also why when you watch a science fiction film from someone like Spielberg and can hear very deep “drone” sound when aliens or some menacing or mysterious thing appears.

      The first part was the humans showing that they learned part of the Alien Language. The Aliens were trying to teach them more, but when the aliens realized all they knew were those five tones, it spent most of it's language trying to teach them how to talk like them. The rest is pretty much a casual conversation. "Hi how are you, sorry we took your stuff and people. We were just curious, we'll give them back to you now. Hey did anyone of you get our other messages. Only two made it. Ok he can come with us." The last bit referring to Neary getting their message and his crazy antics of recreating Devil's tower wondering what it meant.

      Kevin Williams I thought he said “we’re taking over this conversation, now”. In the film, after he says that, the keyboard that the musician was playing on starts to play by itself. I always assumed that the technology they were using to record the ufo’s conversation figured out the pattern in the alien vocabulary and started replying with similar patterns.

    Catchy tones and impressive scene but the whole conversation aspect here is of course complete bullshit. There is no conversation nor teaching going on. It's just music. It's figurative when he should have been literal.
    The ETs are telepathic and they communicate that way. Or they learn our language and speak it. And they don't bother with romantic dates like this. They just go straight to the medical rape :) at least some of the little grey bastard ones. There are many others, including humans not from earth. Those guys seem nicer although they are perfectly willing to let earth remain a lie. Probably until you sheep wake up.
