  • Time Lapse of grinding a 3 panel piece of art using 6061 Aluminum.
This is a rework of an older piece that met with some serious issues during the painting process. The vertical lines at the start of the video are the "eraser" marks. I wiped the original with an 80grit flap disc.
Using a medium conditioning disc, I put down the initial design, then decided to switch back to the flap disc because the 80grit was just too coarse for the medium abrasive to cut through.
Once that was finished, I used my Dremel with a blue roloc to do some fine lines on it, however the camera decided that file was not to be used.

Please note: This video is for demonstration/education purposes. Do not attempt to do grinding of this type without thoroughly understanding the safety precautions and using proper safety equipment. Aluminum dust, high speed equipment, etc. can result in all sorts of injury, disease, and unpleasant ways to die.

Beautiful! How do you frame this kind of artwork?

Framing is somewhat open to interpretation. I for the pieces I originally made starting out I used industrial velcro, however after some experimentation, I have since switched to using wood frames that have larger surface area contact with the aluminum and a layer of lock-tite adhesive. This holds really well. That said, the best method of doing an "invisible" frame is to weld an aluminum frame to the back. Other artists use post style mounting, which requires a hole to be drilled in each corner of the artwork, and others still use notched mounting posts that are made for holding glass. Overall, many artists who make ground aluminum art tend to prefer minimal/invisible frame to give the art the "floating" look when on the wall. Sorry for the lengthy delay in response, it's been a pretty crazy year (2020/2021).

2:27 Always unplug your tool before changing the abrasive. Almost forgot that time.
