This is a great illustration of how much power multi-tracking, a producer/engineer, mixing, and mastering have over the final product. The performances are all there, but these almost sound like different songs at points. It’s cool to hear these songs without all the bells and whistles, especially hearing a single, dry track of Maynard’s vocals. The bass seems a lot more present too.
Omg, I’ve been listening to TOOL since 1995, from just before AEnima dropped. Undertow is still my favorite album from them. So seeing this after almost 30 years, and it has two of my all time fav TOOL songs on it (“Crawl Away” and “4 degrees”) wow so cool
Gotta say, the rawness of the mix here really makes it sound so much better. Way more texture and body to the overall sound. Always found the original mix real piercing and thin. Now if only these were available in a higher quality.
I believe those earlier demos were probably made available anonymously by Paul D'Amour. You can't find the same with the other records because he wasn't part of the band anymore.
That's a theory. But I think when they were starting and were not famous yet and internet wasn't a thing they probably gave demo tapes to a lot of people.
he is...its why he prefers really heavy guitars so he can control feedback precisely...for the best example check out third eye from aenima then listen to the live salival version...he does it all perfectly...that said it might just be that this is the demo version and they used some tracks from this on the album with added tracks....and maynard was so good back then its impossible to tell if this is another vocal take or the same used on undertow...same for the other guys
That line "I'll make weapons from my imperfections" is very, very fine, but Rollins' spoken piece is a well-cut and polished gem, sparkling in the pitch black of the place the song takes you to. I remember seeing Maynard's line printed in the liner art and not being able to hear it anywhere on the record. Hank's soliloquy posing as a speech makes the song much stronger, it seems to me.

I found out about the CD this is on through Discogs. It was some bootleg CD that included this among the 72826 demo and the Ænima demos. I found someone had uploaded that CD in full online but hadnt singled out the Undertow outtakes on it, so I uploaded them here. Credits to kekag for the audio, link for the source in the description.
They’re called “The Undertow Outtakes” on the bootleg CD these are on, even though they’re just demos. I thought naming it “Undertow demos” would just confuse people with 72826.
No, this isn’t 72826 which is the demo you’re thinking of. 72826 does not have 4 Degrees and Bottom, and I believe the recordings of Sober and Crawl Away on this upload are different than that of 72826. EDIT: Just checked and yep, these are completely different recordings than that of 72826. FYI.
For Phone users:
0:01 Sober
4:55 Crawl Away
9:57 4 Degrees
15:47 Bottom
Thanks!
@@arghuspirateradio6950 Ayy, no prob!
Thank u dude

Cannot stress how much awesome this rendition of Bottom is
America's psychward's got talent.
The man is crazy good.
love how clear his vocals are

Ænima is one of their best albums
Same here. TOOL was THE coolest band pre-/during Aenima. I remember all the hype before it dropped. We love/d Undertow. 🤘🖤
That version of “Bottom” !!!!!!!!!!!
Like hearing a completely new Tool song, in a way.
This version of bottom is something else!! Woah can't believe I've never heard it before!
Heh... I was expecting a studio style blooper reel.
Yeah, me too
Gotta say, the rawness of the mix here really makes it sound so much better. Way more texture and body to the overall sound. Always found the original mix real piercing and thin.

I love the Sober song and Maynard's performance in 1993 live concert, WOW!! Sooo freakin interesting!! ❤️🤘Thank you for sharing 😊🤘
Talking about underground ❤️❤️
Thank you for sharing 🙏👏👏👏 absolutely love it 🖤❤️🌀
No problem :)
Thanks for this
Tool rocks forever all hail tool freaking tool
I grew up listening to tool freaking tool
grande tool!!!

I'd say 'Sober' is the unmixed, unmastered album version. Either that, or Adam Jones is fucking good at controlling guitar feedback.

Yeah this version of sober is just a raw mix of the final album version. Def not a demo
Wow
Premix. Raw. Heavy. Holy shit the potential...
If you all were wondering, the pig's name is Moe...
i like how sober is higher pitched
I kinda prefer Maynard's version of the Bottom monologue to Henry Rollin's one.
There's a live version out there with Zack from RATM doing it
@@maximummatt73 I've heard it, I don't like it. Can't stand that guy's voice.
@@LordofDiamondsMetal I can't stand that Zach De La Rocha guy. Great band musically, but an overly political band is so annoying.

4⁰ is really similar to the final version
I love you Maynard James Keenan rock on
Where do you find stuff like this?

@@arghuspirateradio6950 we thank you for this gem!!!
The lyrics are some much easier to understand.
Is sober a half step or full step up?
Sounds like the lp version to me. I don't think anything changed.
I was thinking perhaps it was just the demotape being slightly higher pitched or something
@@arghuspirateradio6950 more than likely. Ferric tapes usually sound a little higher pitched.
Sounds around a half step up
Demos not outtakes

I agree
jesus blow you fckn whistle . something to pass the time. i just want to start this over.
This from their initial demo before opiate FYI .
