Fire Emblem Engage Leaves Me Conflicted

- Fire Emblem Engage's announcement sadly left me unimpressed compared to everyone else, which had me not looking forward to the game in the build up to its release. But after caving by playing and finishing the game myself, my feelings on this game are very conflicted as there were a mixture of things I liked and didn't like. So I'm going to discuss them... and likely get killed in the process.

It’s ok to have you own opinion on media. Like for example I like byleth in smash bros like you do, but most people hate him in smash. So it’s okay to be conflicted with something like this. If people won’t agree with your opinion, it is the internet after all.
2:54, correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the reason some of the characters look like vtubers is because one of the artist is used to making them.
Yeah that’s right. Mika Pikazo designed Vtubers, and even made Vtuber sequel designs for other games where she’s been commissioned like Fate/Grand Order(Red/Blue/Black/White hair being a preference).

That's fine. I actually kinda like the writing in a guilty pleasure so bad it's good way. I think the reason why people were mostly hyped for engage was because I think everyone kinda knew deep down that Engage wasn't going to be a story driven game. Besides, I think Three houses from a narrative stand point was an extremely hard act to follow and I have heard and seen people said they didn't like 3H from a gameplay stand point and even I have issues with it that I felt Engage addressed.
To me, Three houses is the better game writing wise and engage is the better game gameplay wise. Both games are trying to do something different.
To be honest, in regards to engage being a repeat of past games's plots... This franchise has always been doing that. Mystery/New mystery was just a slightly a different repeat of Shadow dragon. Binding blade and Sacred stones was mostly just a repeat of Mystery of the emblem. Birthright was just a slightly altered version of awakening. Heck, I feel even something like Genealogy, Thracia, Path of radiance, and Azure Moon could be seen as "slightly different versions of the same story" if you REALLY look hard enough. And Engage is no different to me. But that's just how I feel.
I want to like Fire Emblem Engage, but... The game has just given me nothing that sticks with me so far. I'm struggling to even find the willpower to finish the game. Although part of that is because I finally got my hands on Persona 5 Royal and loved that game.
I got to only Chapter 7 before I said "Why am I still playing this? I'm not invested in this game's world not it's characters... This is boring." And it bothers me so much because I think the gameplay is still as good as ever (minus the whole Emblem mechanic reminding me of Mega Evolution from Pokemon where you use it turn one and just win against everything). I've tried multiple times to get myself back into the game, but I just... can't. The story feels like a game of capture the flag with the Emblem Rings, the characters feel so one dimensional and some of the character designs are straight up bad like Alear. Some of them look like VTubers, which really does not fit in the world of Fire Emblem, imo.
I don't think Engage is a bad game, but very 'mid,' as the kids say these days and some could argue a game giving you nothing is worse. It's just about as basic and barebones of a Fire Emblem game as you can find. After the stories and characters in Three Houses/Three Hopes, Engage was definitely disappointing.
I'm pretty sure everyone has mixed feelings about Engage after it came out. Not sure if the mixed reaction is the popular opinion, now, but that's the overall reception I'm seeing.
Have you tried vestaria saga or redemption reapers? Both were made by people who used to work in Fire Emblem, so there is a chance you might like them (sorry if other suscribers already said this)
I see many people complaining about the desings, and while i get it might not be their thing saying they don't fit the tone of the game is imo pretty inaccurate, you might not like them, but they're the perfect design for a game like this.
Engage is not supposed to be a serious game about war, in fact I' say serious war is almost nonexistent, engage is a carefree cheerful game and thus it has carefree cheerful designs
3 characters that have won me over in this game are alcryst, pandreo and pannette there great units but they really good interactions with the rest of the cast . For example yes alcryst has low esteem but an other trait that he has is that even when he feels down he is the one to lift everyone else up. Like his supports with citrine, hortensia, sedall, etc.
As for Pandreo he is in my top 3 favorite characters yes his hair is messy but despite that he is the unit that I can say consistenly has good to great supports not a single bad one, if theres any support that i recomend seeing either in game or on your own are the Pandreo-Mauvier and The Pandreo-Pannette (which there are siblings)
I recommend Valkyria Chronicles 1 or 4 if you want a better story.

Youre literally me in the begining. All the same feelings from knowing I'd cave deep down one day, dreading it, HATING the art direction. The pandering rubbed me the wrong way. Rarely any character is memorable, especially in the beginning. Unbelievable how they literally flanderize their own characters from the get go!
The story has grown on me in an irritating way, but yes, obvi bad. I like Alear way better after becoming a...*government agent that is always watching*
I hate that every chacter basically has the same or very compatible worldviews so theres no interesting conflict like between Lorenz and Claude or Felix and Dimitri or Ashe and Hapi, Ashe and Felix, Marianne and Hilda (despite being besties anyway!) Theyre all postmodern cancers, even rewritten that way in post (SIGURD).
I agree that Alear ought to have been a Fell Dragon the WHOLE time, hot red hair, stinted personality and maybe an internal conflict between his base nature and his reason.
Also SO WRONG that Robin and Chrom are DLC????
Personally, the best games are ones where story and gameplay complement each other. If the gameplay is good and you have fun playing, you’d obviously want to keep playing, and if the story is also very good and engaging, you’d keep playing to see where it goes. Even though I haven’t played Fire Emblem Engage, I can tell that I’d enjoy the game but be underwhelmed by the story. It’s totally okay to have an unpopular opinion like this. You have like four videos of unpopular opinions. It’s just a matter of people agreeing or disagreeing. I know Joshscorcher would agree since he streamed Engage but wasn’t able to get very far due to the problems he had with it.
The story I new it was simple but unlike fates it did not take itself seriosly making it more enjoyble. Also 2 things, one unlike everyother avatar MC this is the game were the worthship makes sence since you are A DEITY IN ELYOS and despite that the fact the Alear iteracts with everyone and treats each one the same is a good thing like ike did in his games. Second if you don't like that is a retaling of the first which it has elements but is not total rip off the you can say that TO OVER HALF OF THE SERIES INCLUDING FE 6, 7, part of 9 and 10, awakening, and echoes in other words, could the story be better yes, but considering that the last game was 3H which they would have not do considering there still debating which was the right route, for the next game something more familiar makes total sence
The game was fun
I genuinely prefer Engage's story to Three Houses. Yes, it's a basic and predictable mcguffin hunt. But at least everything that happens makes sense. They don't rely on nonsensical fog for the biggest fights, or insert timeskips for no reason, or have a protagonist who's personality contradicts his story purpose.
I guess it's just a matter of preference: would you rather a bunch of good ideas executed poorly, or generic ideas that are impossible to get wrong?
I’d rather have a badly written character and story/plot that entertains me in that regard than a BLAND character and story/plot. I at least /remember/ the entertainingly bad. This. So boring and forgettable. And gameplay? I can play another trpg with just as good mechanics while having a far better world I’m spending my free time in.
I recommend Valkyria Chronicles 1 or 4 as alternatives.
