Ok I'm obsessed with Julie Andrews' acting in this. I never really got the subtlety of this as a kid, but the parrot is totally right and she knows it. She loves these children, as she does all the children who come under her care, and she wishes she could stay with all of them. But her stating the facts of the matter is totally correct and that it's time for her, the children, and their father to move on. You can just see all of this happening in Poppins' mind and heart in that little bit and it's so heartbreaking and yet so optimistic. Julie ends her performance with one last bit of dialogue conveying such powerful emotion and hits it out of the park. I can't get enough!!

But you could also think the poppy or whatever flower is placed on Mr. Banks also represents a new begining. After all in the Bank the night before he was disgraced and humiliated. But with the new flower on his jacket, it's a new beging of him as a person as well. He is going to take Bert's advice and be a better father and cherish the small moments he has with his kids, as they won't be little for long.

It was one of the main things to happen culturally and politically and I think it's Walt Disneys way of honoring the woman who breathed life into Mary Poppins. That being P.L. I'm in graduate school working to become a child psychologist, and I work with kids now as part of my training. I watch them come and go under my care and the care of my supervisors, only to leave when they no longer need us. This scene, and Mary Poppins' demeanor towards the children, really speak to me. Of course I, and everyone I know in the helping professions, do fall in love with the children we care for. But there's a wall there, a professionalism that can't be breached. The kids I work with don't get access to my feelings the way I do to theirs. Which is as it should be- it would be deeply inappropriate to get too sentimental. And when they leave my life for the last time, that's usually it. I never see them again. But the reality is, I do love them. And I'm proud of them when I see them start to succeed and grow. It's very bittersweet when a kid is ready to stop treatment- I'm thrilled they don't need me anymore, but sad to see them go.
As a child, I never really understood the hidden depth in this scene. Now it's one of the most profound moments in any film to me.
