  • Classic comedy bit from controversial satirist Lenny Bruce and Eric Miller. Originally appeared on Lenny Bruce: American (1961) © Fantasy Records.
    ---------
Leonard Alfred Schneider (October 13, 1925 - August 3, 1966), better known by his stage name Lenny Bruce, was an American stand-up comedian, social critic, satirist, and screenwriter. He was renowned for his open, free-style and critical form of comedy which integrated satire, politics, religion, sex, and vulgarity. His 1964 conviction in an obscenitytrial was followed by a posthumous pardon, the first in New York State history, by then-Governor George Pataki in 2003. He paved the way for future outspoken counterculture-era comedians, and his trial for obscenity is seen as a landmark for freedom of speech in the United States. www.lennybruce.org

Um no. Lenny Bruce was Lenny Bruce. Richard Pryor was Richard Pryor. Edgy comedy wasn't started by him. Raw race comedy has always been I. The Black community. Richard Pryor grew up in a whorehouse and tried to be a crossover comic like Bill and started talking about his life on-stage with people from his neighborhood, not bits. It had nothing to do with Lenny.

@@jamesb8193 man you couldn’t be more wrong. Comedic actor Richard Pryor owes his success to underground stand-up hero LENNY BRUCE - because listening to the funnyman "changed his life".
The BREWSTER'S MILLIONS star, 63, forged a Hollywood career after a successful stint on the live stand-up comedy circuit until drug addiction and ill health hit - and Pryor identifies Bruce's influence as the catalyst for his work.Pryor was fascinated by Bruce’s powerful use of coarse language and sexual talk to challenge his audiences in a more truthful way. Bruce’s work and his death by overdose in August 1966 became a catalyst for Pryor’s own evolution. You probably just don’t wanna give a white man cred for influencing a black comic ,everyone can influence each other dude !

Reelblack, this is great stuff! Thanks! I'm in my forties, so Lenny Bruce was before my time; I only got put on to him a few years back hearing Pryor say in an interview how much he idolized him, and how it was Lenny Bruce that inspired him switch from the clean bit he originally did to the soul revealing Pryor we know and love. I know Pryor was the greatest, but, for those who don't know (and, judging from the comments, they seem to be many) Bruce was more Pryor than Pryor--and long before Pryor! He was the originally junkie comic, pouring his pain and outrage at American culture out on stage just like Pryor--albeit, obviously, from a White perspective. Pryor was controversial, yes; but police used to raid Lenny Bruce shows routinely and arrest him and the whole audience! (George Carlin talks about, before he got big, attending a Lenny Bruce show just to get arrested with him!) The last year of his life, he couldn't complete a single show: Babylon shut down every one! Constant police harassment (and lotsa drugs!) eventually drove him to his death. Reelblack (and anyone else who's interested), there's a great interview online with Rain Pryor, George Carlin's daughter, Lenny Bruce's daughter. Not the Queens, maybe, but definitely the Princesses of Comedy!
No REAL Pryor fan would ever disrespect Lenny Bruce!

@@axidhaus Malcom tried to warn people about the wolves in sheep’s clothing and Mr. Sowell , said let no one hold you back. Get this Martin Luther King Jr is rolling in his grave. Played big time this is what the people who formed the KKK planned out starting shortly after the civil war control the big cities and larger counties . Bring in the skilled workers from the south and put them in the plants slowly ratchet up the taxes. Build ghettos once you break them down . Soon you will have them begging for the good old days and better yet convince them that the evil ones are the people telling them work hard let no one hold you back. Hell people think Abraham Lincoln was a Democrat better yet they have no idea Martin Luther King was a Republican. First they got the black Americans to call themselves African American now the call them people of color. Funny how you change the position of words . Colored people offensive people of color not. Now we are moving towards self segregation. It is amazing also how anything that can really help they put stink on it and hide truth by calling everything racist. Thomas Sowell is called an Uncle Tom see no one read the book because if they did they would know about who the bad guy was Sambo. There are plenty of Sambos that self anoint themselves as a community leader or get elected and do the least for those who just need a hand up . No the hand out is used to control. Good news though the game is starting to be seen . God bless black Americans they are part of the great American culture and I will never pretend I am any better than them. I have nothing but high expectations. Yet somehow we now have a bigot of the highest caliber in charge a guy who was freinds with Robert Byrd a man actual clan member. He was a segregationist and still is . Saying things like he did not want his kids to go to school in a racial jungle. But the other guy who says parts of Baltimore are rat infested hell holes is called a racist for stating facts . No these demons in control now love the murder and crime in the inner cities one way they control it is with planned parenthood. Helps keep the black American population down to a manageable 13% like the founder Margret Sanger would call them weeds .

There was only 1 desegregated club in town at the time so the show was NOT representative of its own city, or its own people who would buy white babies from Quebec City rather than adopt locally. I escaped this fate and was adopted in my own culture. The show it was refused in markets where people were dead set on separation. They thought themselves very clever with their entry-level “seperate but equal” bullshit. So you have to put yourself in this mindset to get the context.

You can argue until you're blue in the face about whether this sort of act would've taken off or been considered acceptable broadly speaking today, but I don't recall any comedians being arrested for "indecency" recently. In fact I can think of some *not* being arrested for being *actually* indecent off stage. You know, Lenny was genius; but while he did a lot of bits on race relation stuff and discrimination people suffered, I never heard him speak on other forms of discrimination (people do it all the time, people who are too short, too fat, too skinny, not physically attractive, have a stray eye or are cross-eyed (or suffer some other form of physical, mental, etc. condition), thousands of ways people discriminate (legally and otherwise). Even the US military says their honor guards at the tomb of the unknown have to be a certain height (above the military's min. height for entry but of course below the max. height for entry), a case of legal (?) discrimination (still stuck on people of lesser height have "a complex" I suppose), and some of the general public still needing their hero's to be tall (dark, and handsome as well...might as well go for the triple crown?). I certainly agree sometimes we need to discriminate (this job requires a BS in chemistry as a mnimum requirement, you must have a SAT/ACT/ASVAB score of *** to be accepted, you must do at least 40 push-ups, followed by at least 50 situps, followed by 1 1/2 mile run within maximum time allowed for your age group to continue serving in US military, City of *** Police or Fire Department, etc.). It's also too easy to discriminate undeservedly (someone with sever acne or warts, craters all over their face, speaks with a stutter or a lisp, easy to stare at someone who looks odd too, but its' not always about race, religion, ethnicity, all kinds of ways we discriminate). Just think about it. RIP Lenny!

I am not sure if that is the satarist’s job. Lenny was about challenging the law and pushing the boundaries of society. Questioning taboo and pointing out hypocrisy. I’m not sure if our culture ever legalized the discrimination against short old or fat. The number one rule in comedy is to never make fun of the less powerful, but to expose that the emperor has no clothes. Today I think he would be pointing his laser beam at equality for women and immigration. Short people and old people may be prevented from certain opportunities, but it doesn’t stop them from having power.

It's a satire on white people of the time. Unfortunately you cannot do satire anymore, because it requires intelligence. People are dumbed down to what they can understand by watching the media, which is targeted for twelve year olds. So if you are playing a character that you want to make fun of, they think you are serious and are a bad person. It's impossible now for an audience to perceive "intent"; they respond literally to words and phrases that are "branded" for meaning. They cannot interpret "context". The funniest gag here is the line about "here's to the Mau Mau's". That was a murderous African rebellion against white people which the white character in this skit would not know about. When you do a character, it doesn't mean in your personal life you are that character, or you think like that character. You are doing it to expose the character using satire. Its amazing now, how many things are condemed that the accusers don't even understand. This is more effective that a black comedian making jokes about white people, yet would probably me misunderstood completely. But the Catholic established persecuted Bruce from one end of the country to the other because of his satire of the Church, their wealth and political clout. A great example of "context" is Bruce's arrest in Chicago for obscenity. He used a word that was considered obscene in the routine. That was considered illegal. But to convict him, a detective had to read back a transcript of the same act in the court room, including the same obsene word the same number of times. Bruce's use of the word in a night club was considered obsene, immoral and illegal. The detective's use of the word in the court room was considered testimony. His point being, the meaning of a word, whether it is offensive or not, is purely contextual. Yet, most points made in the media today and in any commentary methodically take comments out of context.

That's an excellent description . I am beginning to feel foolish for even having what I used to think were normal reactions to practically everything that exists outside my own skin for fear of how it'll be considered, and then, feel silly and traitorous to my ego. The upside is the older I get the less shits I give, if it crosses my mind it comes out my mouth. I've noticed that those around me are in constant nervous anticipation , not so much of what I say next , but their hope that all involved will "get it" , and I don't cause the next revolution. So.. there's that...

    • @JustVinnyMusic
      @JustVinnyMusic 5 лет назад +2

You know I had to try and make a living for a long while on the internet as a single parent. There is software you have to use to analyze your text. It tells you when you are targeting at too high an intelligence level. If you do, you can't sell anything. For some reason, when people read anything on the internet, they respond like an adolescent: 12-13 years of age. Satire is complex and sophisticated art form. It cannot be understood by a 12 year old; neither can issues like "context". People used to learn about their world by talking to each other and their experiences. Now they rely on the media. They are spoken to like children and respond like children. Unfortunately, if you have something serious to say, the internet is not the place to do it. And people have been conditioned to avoid complexity at all; they want to understand everything in a 30 second sound bite. You cannot really say much of importance or complexity that way. You certainly cannot launch a complex satire that way.

No most people understand. This is actually a very clever, but disgusting tactic. It's a form of gaining power over institutions, and anyone who strays from party line. This is a tactic the communists used and even sent out as a suggestion in the 50 or 60s. Saying to label "obstructionists" and opponents as racist, or any other of the most hated people in your society. And use the institutions especially the advocacy type institutions and groups that fight racism or any other universally disliked aspect in society to justify the accusastions.
Also describes how to take over institutions. While only needing to communists. Because they can work together and back each other up. Until they control the powerful positions. I believe they mentioned infiltration of universities as especially important. Now im not calling the progressives / radical left communists. But they have adopted their tactics. Rules for radical by saul alinsky who metored clinton basically rewrote all these tactics. Another is blame your opponent for what your guility of. Russian collusion? Steele dossier? Google Search Manipulation? With that said many are sympathedic or are marxists if not actually communists to varying degrees.

I'm just sharing the information. If you want to see where Lenny Bruce fits into the spectrum of the history of comedy, dig deeper. If not, let it go. If its not to your taste, or you its political incorrectness is dated/difficult to appreciate, thats cool. At the time, it was subversive to even do a comedy routine where a black person performed onstage with a white person. To represent the Black person as intelligent/non buffoon is also groundbreaking. You don't get All In The Family or even Richard Pryor's Word Association sketch on SNL without this recording from 1961. Put Eric Miller's character against Stepin Fechit. Listen to what Redd Foxx was doing at the same time or take in consideration that Dick Gregory was just bursting on the scene in 1961.

Its a channel where we promote Black Culture. In addition to original films, music performances and content, occasionally I'll discover and post information that helps put today's conversations about race, representation and identity in context. I chose to post two comedy bits by Lenny Bruce from over 60 years ago on the channel as historical reference. I didn't tell you how to react. Apparently you were offended. If you asked, does this type of comedy have a place in today's society, I might have a better answer. But I am starting to think that somehow, because you check this channel regularly (which I am greatly appreciative), you are looking for validation or empowerment, not to advance an intelligent conversation about wether things have changed and if so, how.

christopher starr well you are simply wrong. You may not think he is funny, but to say he wasn’t important is one of the dumbest things you can possibly say.

Not sure why all the comedians give this guy so much cred. I don't think he's that funny. Just sayin'

When Lenny does this stuff, it's satire. When I copy Lenny doing satire, I'm right wing. Welcome to comedy hell !

I am a westernized 16 year old and my humour is very far, far away from this style and culture. I am intrested in how this was able to make people of the time laugh, so what was it about Lenny Bruce that was so funny?

Freedom of speech is not about being nice; it's the right to say unpopular, vulgar, and especially hurtful things. There are limits, but the idea is that these are the exception not the rule. It is about not being a slave to words and their perceived meanings. Sorry I know your ? was about humor, and to be honest, I'm not 100% sure it's supposed to be "funny", maybe more thought-provoking than anything else.
