Monk is streaming now on Peacock: pck.tv/3JuixBg
Season 3, Episode 8, "Mr. Monk and the Gameshow": With Sharona out of town visiting her ailing mother, Monk has been left in the care of his annoying former neighbor, Kevin Dorfman. As Monk is forced to deal with Kevin's antics, there's a knock on the door. To his astonishment, it's Dwight Ellison, the father of his late wife, Trudy. Ellison is an executive overseeing a popular game show called "Treasure Chest." He's convinced the current champion is cheating, so he asks Monk to come to Los Angeles to help him figure out what's going on. Monk and Dwight head to L.A., with Kevin in tow.

Monk Synopsis: Adrian Monk (Emmy®-winner Tony Shalhoub) was once a rising star with the San Francisco Police Department, legendary for using unconventional means to solve the department's most baffling cases. But after the tragic and still-unsolved murder of his wife, Trudy, the devastated Monk becomes obsessive-compulsive. His psychological disorder has caused him to develop an abnormal fear of virtually everything: germs, heights, crowds... even milk. Monk's condition costs him his job, but he's back as a police consultant despite the unique challenges he encounters in his everyday life. These challenges lead Monk to hire a personal nurse, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), who is always there to offer her assistance, even with the simplest of tasks (like organizing his sock drawer). Her less-than-subtle prodding keeps the "defective detective" on track in his investigations, as well as in his efforts to convince Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) to allow him to return to the force.

If your brakes go out and you can't coast to a stop, downshift to a lower gear. Your car's gear box is nothing compared to your life. Once you're going a safe speed, you can apply your parking brake to finish stopping.
My question is, is how she managed to make it so far, without needing to apply the brakes until that very moment...
cant really do that to an automatic with no manual shifting. some emergency brakes are still wires, so that can work
@@GrimYak Most automatic cars can still be manually put in 2nd and 1st gear. Just move the shifter all the way to the end. Just because you don't have a clutch doesn't mean you don't have any control over the gear
This option exists for going up steep hills, but it would save your life in this circumstance
In the real world, she would still have half her brakes. The front two. He cut the rear lines. Modern cars have split the brake system into two sections. Front and rear.
@@MrYfrank14 Many are split front-right to rear-left, and front-left to rear-right. This cross pattern is shown to be safer.
I like how the upstairs neighbor's pointless "he's checking his messages..." etc. Exposition, was completely unnecessary (which was the joke) at the time, but now 20 years later it actually help us know what is happening for those of us who havent used a physical answering machine in over a decade.
😂yes
Smart observation
I love how nobody ever uses there emergency brake for actual emergencys
@Tyler Cosgrove. And/or shifting down and/or turning off the ignition.
@@mitchmiller7204 Or if everything else fails practicing an emergency crash by turning into the hill, instead of driving headlong off a cliff.
Or downshifts
it would also help to take the foot off the accelerator
You mean parking brake ? Wont help much. Also, all brake systems have two circuits. So both front and back lines would have to be cut. Never, ever, turn the ignition switch to the off or locked position. You need the engine running to be able to steer.
2:08 -- I love how Kevin is holding his hands up in emulation of one of Monk's signature eccentric behaviorisms.
Lol Kevin came prepared with baggie for the evidence they collected:)Loved their relationship:)
but then proceeded to put chewed on pencils in his mouth. XD
Monk and Columbo, my favorite quirky detectives!
2:06 I like how Kevin does the hand gesture Monk usually does.
"This is my rugged terrain face" 🤣
Easily one of my favorite episodes of the series.
Though I do find it funny that the cheater in this episode would probably have *never* gotten caught if he wasn't such an idiot and a full on arsehole.
Making remarks that show how ignorant he is, not even looking at the picture prompts needed to solve the question on *live television* , basically letting the show host know he's cheating ,and ordering expensive items weeks before he even signed up for the game show.
If the guy had played things just a little smarter, even Monk might not have been able to figure out how he did it.
The cheater was so dumb he couldn't make it more obvious he's cheating. Like when he was talking to Monk about the "bridge in Frisco" and Monk goes "the golden gate" and he's like "no idiot the bridge", he made it clear he's not a very educated man. Also mispronouncing things during the games and not looking at the photos. If he was a better cheater there's a chance he would have gotten away with it, cause Trudy's dad might not have suspected him.
what kind of idiot blackmails a murderer anyways.
Val: "I was there last year, it was foggy all week. When are they gonna do something about that fog?"
Okay, I'll speak to climate's manager and see if we'll get somewhere.
Two weirdos having a field day!!! Am loving it!!!
What upsets me is that the victim may have been saved if she got medical attention quickly. The cheater was starting to dial 911, but stopped when she started to say the game show host did it. At that moment, his greed took over and he let her die.
I don’t blame Monk for his reaction to hearing Kevin swallowed a bug.😅😆 With how much Kevin talks, this probably happens to him a lot when he’s outside.😉
They really didn’t need to kill Kevin off at all.
Didn't he win the lottery?
@@themadnessofmadara4883 he poorly invested his money and got married a lot,so he lost it.
No they didn't. As much as I loved the show, killing off Kevin was the worst move.
the show loved to make its characters suffer
They made a BIG mistake! He could have been his assistant instead of Nataile!
She had so many chances to crash your car into something quite gently, she wasn’t going too fast.
She also could’ve just jumped out of the car or stayed on the road....
lol i noticed that as well, her brakes were cut, that doesn't make the car accellerate off a fucking cliff, 20-30 seconds later. hell, just drive in a circle, or at a hill, and when it slows down, hop out.
Did she not notice anything wrong with her brakes before reaching the cliff. Was that the first time she started using the brake since leaving her driveway
Or used the E-brake. Or Downshifted. Or literally anything besides panic.
Yep that is definitely the worst death you gotta question her reasoning.
Panic makes many people do stupid things, even smart people.
In most detective show facing this problem they just break in claiming they heard some strange sound, but in Monk...genius
Can Kevin claim that he was “outside” while taking the pencil? Not sure.
@@keithtorgersen9664 It's fun that they at least acknowledged the basic law where most shows like to pretend cops have full reign to do whatever they want.
But even with that they still ignored the law. The act of opening the door constitutes breaking an entering. It doesn't matter how far they went in to the home. The breached the door that was blocking entrance.
And taking the pencil is obviously miles beyond even that :)
@@Cdaragorn They didn't enter so it's just breaking.
@@doktormabuse4794 They didn't enter? Are you joking?
Under the law just breaching the space by opening the door constitutes "entering" because you've already entered further than the door allowed before you breached it. But they then physically entered the space within the home. I can't imagine how you can ignore that. Are you honestly trying to pretend that because their feet didn't go inside the rest of their body entering is somehow not important?
I love Monk and Kevin❤😂
The thumbnail is hilarious! Little baby Monk found a toy 😂
forgot how much i love monk 😂😂
Wheres the other 1/2 of this episode. You cant leave me hanging like this
I loved the friendship of these two. Too bad hat happens to Kevin. :(
Monk was really heart broken by Kevin's death. 'He was just a kid' he said to Natalie.
How did Kevin die? .....
@@tristanhnl He was strangled by a magician.
@@globbyakaweirdjellyguy954 That’s how I wanna go out.
@dudedurham, that magician was psycho. He was about to throw his fiancee and Monk into a furnace when the police got there.
First of all, thats an Audi, if u cut the break line the warning light goes on, allso the break system is built so that even if 1 line is bloken, 2 wheels would still operate. And to finish this off, the handbreak would work even on a broken break lined wheel.
You can lean anywhere you want, its in the constitution 😂
Dear everyone advising to downshift:
Most modern automatic transmissions EVEN IF YOU DOWNSHIFT the lever, will not slip into a lower gear until it is safe to do so meaning since her car was going so fast, the transmission will want to wait until she slows down a bit to avoid damage (at least that’s what my 2001 does). The best course of action would be to NOT TURN THE CAR OFF (you will lose power steering) and shift to neutral and apply the parking brake. You could also ride the ditch or intentionally swerve back and forth if you have the space (you lose speed when turning)
There was no “catches killer with a soda can” in this clip.
And it makes it seem like he is the one who do it when it was actually the game show host.
So sad what happened to Kevin because most people who can tolerate Monk either have too but still like him Like His therapist’s or people in His job as a detective but other Human being’s can’t stand him since Monk has OCD so he fixes anything he sees wrong but than they get mad at him for it which to be fair isn’t wrong because he shouldn’t do that but it’s OCD’s fault Kevin was the only one outside his Life as a Detective and therapy that Likes him
Cuz kevin lives in his own world so it's hard for monk to bug him.
Monk - ich liebe ihn!
The only person who can truly annoy Monk is Kevin.
Nope....it was Harold 😁. Greetings from México City.
@@oscarramirez9536 haha you're right
@@iganpparamarta8813 I hated the decision of the writers about killing Kevin Dorfman 😒....that character had more funny/annoying things to do in the show.
Kevin made a great side-kick, a sort of Robert Crumb vibe.
Always mystifies me that people don't run their cars into the uphill side of the road when their brakes fail.
Most people can't stay collected in an emergency. It takes having survived too many emergencies to have perfect calmness and clarity and most people don't get past the first one.
@@fingerboxes Preprogramming yourself by envisioning potential scenarios and deciding what actions you should take does a lot to make your reactions kick in and save you.
@@patmcbride9853 Nah, that's just an anxiety disorder. I've been through enough of both to know the difference.
Drove from the middle of the suburbs out to the mountains without ever hitting the brakes. She must have blown through every single stop sign on the way to the mountains.
Sans freiner ??? Tu devais beaucoup ralentir alors.

Kevin was the alter ego of Monk. Not so smart, but somehow special.
Monk is the greatest TV detective since Columbo.
Yes on tv
The issue is we too often refer to it as the hand brake or the parking brake. We need to refer to it more as the emergency brake.
So sad what happened to Kevin. It made me cry. I was so shocked.
He should have had a happy ever after when he won the lottery. You'd think he'd have been smart enough not to blow it all. His death didn't make much sense, either. He never found out about the heroin his boss was shipping in, only that his load was getting charges as heavier each time, his boss could have told him, "ah, Kevin, that's because I always bring back antiques from overseas and hide them in my equipment! Now forget it about it." 😕Lazy writers wanted him broke and dead, but there was a funny scene in this episode, of him leaning. 😆
@@randomfullywonderful aparently s8nce the Actor's contract was almost over they decided to kill him instead of renovating it since the show was going to end soon. The producers later regret it when theybrealize that he was beloved by the fans.
@@22espec Oh, they said that? Interesting. I'd regret the sloppy writing as to why he was killed. It's okay to have a beloved character killed, but make it over something real and tragic. It just confused me. And the way they let the magician go off on his own at the end when he acted like he was genuinely confused as to where he had disappeared to, which almost also got Monk and his fiance killed? Oh, for goodness sake. Cartoonish. 🙄
Kevin Dorfman of Monk
And Mary Lightly of Psych. Great side characters cut down in their prime.
To prevent this, use manual transmission.
You can just put in the first gear and it will break for you. At some point you can engage the handbreak or steer into the mountain.
I loved Kevin such a shame they killed him off he was a great friend to Monk
They didn't actually kill him off. His contract ran out. And they wanted to give him a dramatic exit. Rather than just have him disappear.
Just like the squint on Bones
@@pirateofthecarabiners but they did kill him in show I understand they wanted to be dramatic but their were other ways to do that
@@harrybaldino8955 It's a show about murders and death. It seems like an appropriate way to send him off.
5:44 -- Who carries a pencil IN THEIR FRONT PANTS POCKET???
Never mind, I know who. Kevin does.
I'm a schoolteacher. Two No.# 2 pencils, a Bic pen with 5 colors, and a calculator.
@@paulleckner8235 In your front pants pocket, Paul? Not your shirt pocket or something?
It seems like it would A) be very uncomfortable and B) risk putting a hole in your pocket.
You're absolutely right Issac.
How come people in movies don't know about gear-braking or handbrake?
If it's a stressful enough situation, I could see someone forgetting they have other options.
(Screen Rant Pitch Meeting voice) Because I need the movie to happen!
Kevin is my favorite side character s
Why aren't there any full episodes?
But the clip doesn't show him solving the case!

Where are the full episodes you promised?
The thumbnail lmao
The conclusion to this is found in the clip labelled “Monk solves murder on live TV”.
Always focus on the direction you want to go
I need to get myself a "rugged terrain" face.
Of course I know this is just a TV show, and largely a comedy at that, but ...
I just have to point out that A) she could have used her hand brake (or parking brake) and B) if she had been wearing her seat belt (with a shoulder strap, as is standard nowadays), she could very well have lived through that tumble.
So when will peacock be available in India? I really wanna rewatch this show.
Have you tried using a VPN? You can change your location.
I watch on Amazon Prime. Does that help?
The best thing the lady driver could have done is directing the car to the side of the mountain not the ravine. I believe it is doable because we live in the mountainous region here in the Philippines and my cousin and a friend did while driving. Both their breaks did not function during those times of accident and they are still alive with minor injuries only during the accident.
Ooooh, the victim was also in the Mentalist!! Forgot which episode, but she was a psychologist and there was a guy in a wheelchair.
More I shall not say, in case I spoiler!
yy
Pull up the emergency brake😮
Trudy's dad looks like Steve Holmes...
I love how these comments don't realize it was TV not real life . Kevin was such a pain in the butt just the Natalie that everyone loves .
I wondering where scene monk catches the killer...?
Theyre so cute togetherr
If this were the 70s the card would have exploded.
FYI, you can't "lean". hahhahahah. The doorway and windows of your house have an invisible barrier. Penetrating that barrier is breaking and entering.
UH.... Clipping one brake line will NOT fully disable the brakes. Only one axle. So there would still be enough stopping power to slow the vehicle. Besides, she would've felt something off by her first braking attempt after leaving the driveway and the brake warning light woulda come on to tell her something was amiss. Fakefakefake... 😜
Guy just randomly has a bowling pin is his living room?
I'd stop that car Fred Flintstone style.
Kelvin was my favorite character after Monk
He’s a killa but I’m still alive lol
Do cars not come with emergency brakes anymore?
Don't drive off a cliff if your brake line gets cut.
Does the emergency brake still work???
I don't understand how someone could get to a highway and not realize their brakes aren't working.
I love this show so funny?😊
That's why it's important to learn how to work your emergency brakes. Go into an empty parking lot, wind it up to 60, and then stop your car using the emergency brakes without losing control.
It's such a weird jumping to conclusions Monk does here. "I just saw someone do a thing millions of people do, but clearly finding this can means he was here."
Love me some Monk, but this was wild!
Wouldn't you find it suspicious to see a guy your father-in-law wants you to investigate for cheating having a habit of disposing their soda can by putting the tab into it, and find another can disposed similarly at an accident site (both cans even being the same brand)?
@@NobodyC13 Suspicious? Maybe. It's evidence for sure, but not very strong. But Monk is so certain he must've been there because of this! He doesn't even know if the guy always drinks this stuff - imagine being a Pepsi guy and there's only Coke provided on set. Surely you would drink Coke on set and Pepsi privately?
I get that they needed the scene to establish a connection between the accident and the cheater, but the way they went about it is just so flimsy. Could've been better if Monk said "That's the way X does it, too!" and Kevin jumping to conclusions ("So he was here!") with Monk being more cautious ("It's possible/could be").
@blackbot7113, i’ve wondered about things like this, Monk’s assumptions about people’s habits when there is such a thing as coincidence.
@@blackbot7113 I just rewatched the episode and in addition to the cheater having a habit of throwing away his cans in a particular order and finding one on site, it was stated on the game show that one of the cheater's hobbies is hunting/fishing nearby the site of the crash. Which gives Monk further evidence that the cheater is implicated in something greater at play.
Handbrake?
only thing that didn't make sense to me in this episode, is the woman was killed because she found out the host was helping a contestant cheat.....but who was he cheating with? the blackmailer only got involved with the show afterwards, so they didn't mention who the host was helping to cheat before him, and what happened to that contestant?
Actually, even peering into the windows to search in the way they do violates the 4th amendment. You don't even need to lean into the door.
Since when is a 12 minute snippet a full episode??????
I have always wondered what drives a person to prefer driving their car over a cliff to damaging their transmission by either downshifting to low or putting it in Reverse.
NEWSFLASH: your transmission will be toast anyway when you go over the cliff.
I put my tabs in my can. I guess i was there too
Wait’ll you swallow one 😂😂😂
Oh girl! Just downshift and use your emergency brake. Scrape the hillside to burn off energy and call a tow truck. Dont just scream and pump the non working brakes for 30 seconds!
Writers can be so bad. But the director and editor really take the blame this time for just stretching out the scene way too long to make it more 'dramatic', but it instantly also makes it unbelievable.
Is it just me or does the actor playing Birch look like Hans Zimmer.
# 291!!!!
WHOOOOOO....DOGGY!!! 🤘🤘🤘
Sorry but the title is wrong. The soda can guy is not the killer. He was actually blackmailing the killer.
I feel like down gearing the car and using the parking brake or shutting off the car would help to avoid these "tragedies" irl
Why is she still accelerating after she knows the breaks are not working?
That's what happens when you go downhill
Honestly people in the comments have been supplying different ways to just brake when you can't brake normally. I just figured if it comes to that point in such a similar situation, unbuckle your belt and just get out the car. Better hurt than dead.
Is "Leaning" actually lawful.
why did she just leave the car in gear? why didn't she put the car in neutral let the car coast and when it slowed down enough use her E brake?
because nobody breaks off the tab and drops it in the can? facepalm. nor chews on their pencil????
They really should not have killed Kevin.
put car in lower then lowest gear... after car slows down pull the emergency brake.
If that were to happen to a driver's brakes while driving on such a dangerous road, what is the driver's safest bet? Should she drive into the side of the mountain, away from the cliff's edge?
Downshift and use the ebrake
@@peterjensen6844 Would that be the same thing as the parking brake?
