This happened with me and my mom at Walmart. Except I kept going up the chain of command not taking "no refund" as the answer. We got our money back after 30 minutes. The serial numbers were different on the tv and the box. Once I mentioned Walmart was basically committing fraud by selling these tv's like this, we got our money back. My mom was not going to be out her money because their employees or supplier is stealing tv's. They knew what was going on. I made them check another tv to see if this certain brand were all like that, and I was right.

When I worked for Walmart as a teenager, a few women who worked at the customer service desk would meet their friends/family members in the receiving area behind the store, load up TV’s in their cars. Then return old ones for money. This was back when the big “boob tube” TV’s were still around. I opened a box one day and found cinder blocks in it. I wouldn’t return it, so the ladies at the customer service desk got mad. Long story short, two of them were arrested, and a few others quit before they were fired or arrested.

This is a common problem which has gone on for more than 50 years of dirt bag consumers replacing a new item with an old item and returning it and even sealing the box with hot glue, only to have the returns department gladly take it back and put it back on the shelf. It's also a very easy fix, if manufacturers special seal the box and/or store employees look at the item when being returned. When i buy a higher ticketed or boxed item, i open it in the store or parking lot.

Happened to me at Best Buy in Dublin, with a GoPro. Some stole and replaced an GoPro 11 with a 10. I immediately got back in the car to unscrew myself. Explained it to the cashier, he seemed confused, so I asked for a manager. The first manager was a jerk, she completely ignored that I purchased the camera not 20 minutes ago. I asked for a more senior manager. He compared the receipts. Discovered that it was an open box item and immediately offered a refund or replacement. Now, I open everything that I can right in front of these guys to verify the right product is in there. Also...stopped shopping at Best Buy as much as possible.

I bought a coffee maker from Walgreen's Drugstore probably close to twenty years ago. My old one died and I NEED my coffee in the morning. I bought it off the shelf and brought it home and went to open it up and clean it up for use the next morning, and to my surprise ...... there was a used coffee filter and coffee grounds in it. The first thing I noticed while unpacking it, obviously, was that the white coffee maker wasn't all that "white" or clean, and then it was obvious that this was used and simply returned to the store and the people at the store literally just took the re taped up box and put it back on the shelf. I immediately brought it back and asked for a manager, and this younger guy walked up to me and I explained everything to him, and opened the box and he saw everything. He literally, and I'm not exaggerating one iota here, said nothing but his mouth was just hanging open. He just stared at it, and finally I said "Should I just go grab another one off the shelf"? because after fifteen seconds of this dude saying nothing and literally with his mouth gaping open, I figured ONE of us had to say something, and he just nodded. THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is how America's stores are being run and managed, and again, THIS was probably in 2002, and it "ain't" getting any better. This is 100% on the store and on their people who work in or run the returns department. I'm shocked that Walmart, after seeing the OBVIOUS scam here, wouldn't take the television back without a hassle. Just one reason out of probably 30 (the clientele being on the TOP of the list), that I have not stepped foot in a Walmart in decades and never, ever will again.

We sold TVs too and there was a crime ring that was buying them and removing the TV and then they would put a log it the box that weighed the same and then very carefully retape the box to the point you couldn’t tell it had ever been opened. It worked well, you would have to flip the box upside down to tell anything was off, and no one does that. I opened the box and inside were mop heads. I first called Sam's Club for assistance and they said I had to file a theft report with police because it was over $1000. I thought that's BS and hung up, called back again, got a different rep and they immediately said they'd send a new one because they value their club members. I shouldn't have to file a theft report with the police and have my insurance cover it just because someone at their distribution center stole my item. But they made it right. If you don't get satisfaction the first time, call back, get a different rep who actually cares, and keep pushing.

Good griefI One would assume if you're buying from a retailer, especially a large one such as Walmart, online or otherwise, you are buying directly from that retailer and therefore subject to consumer protection laws that can't implement a policy of no returns for defective or not-fit-for-use products. (This assumes the US has such laws)
If Walmart or any retailer are allowing 3rd party sellers in-store or online, then it should be made very obvious to the customer whether they are buying directly from the retailer or from a third party seller. Their site overall should also clearly include the fact that they facilitate 3rd party sellers which aren't necessarily subject to consumer protection laws and therefore aren't guaranteed a return policy. no matter how unfit for purpose the product may be. If they aren't, then evidently consumer protection laws haven't kept pace and should be rectified.

In order to ensure that the TV that's being returned to Walmart is the TV that belongs in the box and that it's the TV that matches the receipt there is a number sticker on the TV that corresponds with a number sticker code on the box which must correspond with the same number that's printed on the receipt it requires opening the box take the TV completely out look at the sticker look at the number compare that to the number on the box compare that to the number on the receipt

@@bmaiceman How is someone realistically going to remove a tightly and perfectly packed up 60 or 75 inch TV out of the box in the store, THEN get it back into the box? Have you ever tried removing any kind of electronic or small home appliance from a manufacturer's box? Everything is packed inside so tightly and in such a way that it's next to impossible to pack it all back up and get it into the box.

@@moondancer334 be that as it may that is the standard procedure!. Believe me I know been there done that several times lol. And yes I have dealt with manufactured electronic devices and appliances in game consoles and such that are packed in such a way that once you remove them from the original packaging to check their contents putting them back together so that they will fit back into the original box is nothing short of a giant life-size Jenga game LOL believe me I know exactly what you're talking about, still that is the standard procedure

I once bought a box of "new" spark plug wires for my care from a auto parts store. Before I paid I started opening to box to inspect them. The clerk tried to stop me. I new something was wrong when I saw the color was blue. Only the original one's on the car were blue. Yup, just as I thought they were old used spark plug wires. The store clerk then offered to sell them to me for half price. I said nope. If I bought them before checking them they would of refused to take them back when I returned them a day later.

I live in the Philippines, when you purchase anything there, they open the box and check everything, I mean everything, if you buy a boxes of tiles, they open every box and check every tile, all electrical components are connected to the power supply and checked.

Haven't shopped at Walmart in over 5 years. Not in person, pick up, or online. Zero! I support shopping at local owned stores, even if it means paying more. Good customer service, good return policies, KNOWING the people who work there ENJOY their jobs. Keep your money local and not in the pockets of corporate owners.

I bought a brand new playpen for my toddler at Walmart. The box was open, but a Walmart associate said it's because a customer had opened it to look inside, but it was a new playpen and had never left the store. I bought it and took it home, only to find vomit stains all over it. Obviously, it had been used and returned, but Wal-mart refused to take it back and give me a refund. Fortunately, I found an employee who was a former student of mine, and he helped me get my money back.

It sounded like he ordered it online from Walmart and it was supplied by a third party vendor.
Maybe.... and that vendor shipped the substituted TV.
I can see where the store was confused and doubtful.
It would be rare for a new flatscreen to be sold in store like that, now they do sell open box "as is" items at times.
I'm just glad he was able to get his refund.
Stores hate the web order returns, you can help by going online and start a return and get a Number so when you go to the store it is much easier to get your money back.
Always helpful to take pictures when something is damaged or missing.

I had something that I bought in Walmart and when I got home and opened the box it was not the right thing. Come to find out when I went in store that all the boxes back in the electronic section box said one thing and the equipment inside the box was totally different. Walmart wasn't gonna refund me my money (guess they thought I was a scammer) but when my husband pointed out to the manager that every box box on shelf was wrong, they took them off the shelf and gave me my money back. I know make sure it's the right thing. Once I wanted some small appliance and when I picked up the box it was very light. Someone had taken the appliance out of it.

Easy answer. Go into the store. Pick what you want. Make sure box has not been tampered with. Load into your cart. Purchase it. Take it home.
THIS IS NOT A NEW CONCEPT. SHOPPING ONLINE IS.
