Exactly the video I've wanted for years, not how a compressor works but when and WHY to use it.

Great video. Breaks the norm a bit to rely solely on your ears but the kick is such a crucial element that you should use everything you can to get it right. Thanks dude.

thx for saving my mix man, just turning a few knobs on the compressor added everything that I missed on the kick sample I'm using rn. more punch, softer hit, tried a bunch of things on the eq and nothing seemed to work and now you explained everything and gave me the missing lesson on compression, understand so much more about it now, thank u man!
P.S: and yes it would have been easier to just use a balanced kick sample :P it just had the sound to it u know xp

great stuff dude! a little Trick I wanna share: For the last Sample my choice would go for a Clipper (V Clip is great for that), clip the peak and shape simultaneously through the Clipping Modes (hard, soft, etc.)

An adjustment of the high end can also reduce that initial click volume

A kick from a sample pack is already going to be overly processed, because they want to make the sounds loud so you buy them - Do you think this still applies to someone who uses a virtual instrument like a 909 or 808? We are producers who don’t use samples much at all and we do use compression… Well you went over this question as I was writing out the comment - Is it wrong to use compression on Kick’ from VST’s?

Great video, but even more importantly--THANK YOU so much for suggesting the MiniMeters plug-in. I've been looking for this for a few weeks. I knew there had to be a plug-in like this. All the other plug-ins were simple spectrographs or basic waveform views. This looks perfect.

great bro, have a production channel too. unfortunately only in GER language. subbed. IF i compress kicks I usualy do this to tame the transient (if too peaky). which is then a super fast attack time. like clip / limiter. but you are right most of the times no comp is needed on single kick. group is another topic.

good video, a bit nitpicky, but the reason that the 3rd example doesnt really work without lookahead isnt that a "computer is only so fast". Every sample is always processed, if the computer had delay, the output would be delayed, but fully processed, so the reason the compressor still lets the transient through is more an inherent property of how compressors respond to signals. Actually analog gear would proabably behave very similarly, since analog doenst really have an (easy) option for lookahead.

  • @JacobraRecords

As soon as the gain surpasses the threshold, it is reducing gain. The attack does not act like a delay before compression hits, it acts like a fade in. It's the amount of time it takes it to go from un-compressed, to fully compressed.

Hey Cloverdale, when listening to Tinlicker, their kicks sound so clear and powerful, easily cutting through the mix. However, when I try emulating that (especially during the mixing & mastering stage) my kicks cannot have that much volume and clarity in the mix without clipping and distortion. In short, I cannot achieve the same relative volume balance while aiming for -6 to -9 LUFS.
Any tips on balancing your kick within your mix to achieve clear & punchy kicks like Tinlicker? (example tracks would be Sleepwalker and Bird Feeder)

Side chain certain tracks to your kick so they subtley "duck" under the kick snap =)

How can i see the wave form in Ableton so that i can see what the effect is from the compressor, the thing you have on top of the screen.

You could also just edit(split transient and body) the samples levels and render a new sample, or a mixture of both. ...or just use the EQ like you did, EQ is in fact just a compile of levels

If you're using samples it's likely already compressed anyway, so no need for compression. Live drums will more likely need compression to control wayward peaks.

If you actually watched the video you'd know that he isn't saying there's no reason to ever compress a kick, and includes an example of a kick that would benefit from compression.
