How to repair a Kitchenaid Artisan Mixers that runs but is not turning the beater.

- Kitchenaid Artisan with a stripped out worm drive gear. Common problem for a kitchen aid if it's been used heavy for mixing dough.
The gear is plastic, but this is not a bad design or design to fail.
It is a sacrificial part. It is the weakest part in the drive, so If the beaters jam or the mixer is over used on dense material. This gear is designed to strip out so other more expense parts of the motor are not damaged.
This gear is quite cheap and easy to change compared to the armature.
These are one of the best mixer you can buy, and i would be a big fan of kitchen aid mixers.
They are very well made and very powerful.

Dont know how I came across this video, but i learned WHY they would put a platic gear in there. Makes sense now. Great job.
I have rebuilt a number of these units and have found that there are two ways that most often leads to this repair. One is getting a spatula or other item in the bowl while mixing that locks the beater second most people never put some veggie oil on the accessories drive shafts like a grinder and they bind up and stall the drive. You are right this gear is made to fail and save the motor. Very well built mixer, I have three and used them for my restaurant.
Yes they are well built and expensive.
2 time damaged on three times of use 🤔 i cant understand why
Can u help me please ? I'm struggling with this part I mean I bought the new worm drive and put on it but once I close all the machine and try to turn on that didn't happen and I don't know why 😭😭😭😭
Nice work Dean, love your video work.
I've been a mechanic for 55. Yrs. The very first machine I ever worked on when I was about 10yrs old was one of these and it was that gear! It was my mum's machine.
You brought some very strong memories back for me, thank you.
سلام واقعا استاد ماهری است کارش را دوست دارم تعمیر کار باانصاف ، دقیق وبا نظم وتمیز کار می باشد.
thank you for this from Southern California. My wife uses this model and i've been wanting to fix her lever for her since it wont switch off easily now with this video i can take it apart and put it back together for her since she uses it almost every day.
Thank you so much for this video. Following your great instructions I’ve been able to get my kitchenaid going again :-)
Thank you for the video! I was able to order parts and repair my mixer within four days of failure thanks to your clear and informative directions
You are the man! Best tool technician I've seen on youtube!!
Quality uses sacrificial to protect. Perfect example of such and yes cost some money to repair, but note she's back in service for years more. No landfill. Well done sir, I subscribed.
Well said!
At least the brushes are serviceable as well. This was really helpful because I’ve watched some tutorials where people just cake the grease on, this was very informative as the adage goes “less is more”.
God work, boss!
One bit of advice I'd say is when putting several screws to attach something, get all the screws put in before tightening any of them..i see young guys put tension on bolts of motors or such, then struggle to get the rest started.
I got my wife a KitchenAid mixer for her Christmas 40+ years ago, gets used nearly everyday since. Maybe I should get that gear for standby as it has not failed since new!
Thanks for the informative video. My wife has an identical mixer ( except for color ), to the one you feature. She has used it for years but I know the end will come. Now I know what to do when it does.
Nice informative video. I’m glad he mentioned using food safe gear grease. Using the proper grease is actually very important. I once learned this repairing gears on a commercial kitchen grinder and used gear oil. It was too light weight and ended up seeping into the motor bearings and seizing them.
Doesn't really matter what kind of grease you use if you pay attention and stop using it if / when it starts leaking. Some of the 'food grade' grease is crap and breaks down quickly and it's not exactly anything I want to eat. The grease is supposed to stay in the machine, then it won't bloody matter will it?
Food safe grease is only for the planet hub...high temperature lithium grease is best for the gearbox
Thanks for the education on how to fix the KitchenAid. I truly learned something that I did not know. And you just proved that we are part of a throwaway society that was a simple repair and it makes perfect sense that that gear would be plastic so that it would break first before the rest.
thank you! Saved me a lot of frustration and anger. Mine stripped out at the first use; now I know that it was through my own fault...some of the meat I was grinding was still somewhat frozen. Yea, stupid; I know. At least now I know I can fix it. Thanks again!
Any time

Amigo mi batidora gira pero se escucha ruidos extraños , será que le falta lubricación?
Thank you for doing this tutorial we will be fixing ours this weekend just ordered the parts
You had some really good insight, anyone who fixes things automatically thinks planned obsolescence. But its really just a safety measure to help protect all the other gears, im sure someone makes a metal replacement for those who want longevity.
Thanks for the post. Nice work. I was glad to find it. When fixing mine I realized that the black screws on the side holding the motor brushes don’t have to be removed. It avoids screwing up when putting them back in like I did and thought the motor was dead.
love how you really scrape off those old grease and keep it nice and clean👍
Great video! I will start the repair on my mixer tomorrow. Thanks so much for demonstrating this repair. God bless.
Fantastic video, so professional. Have a kitchenaid but think may get a professional to look at her. Can imagine losing most screws or forgetting where parts go back 😅😅
It’s enjoyable to watch and learn from your videos. Thank you Dean.
Good video Dean. Nice to see you repairing something completely different from the norm.
I think you just gave me an idea as to what's wrong with my wife's competitor model. Thanks for the insight, great work!
Great video, clear & straightforward.
Glad to know it's not a big deal if or when my wife's gear strips...her mixer gear!!
Awesome - Rock’n a Casio watch too lol. Thanks for the video.
built in my home state of ohio, USA. kinda country so its nice you folks work on stuff like we do and fix ourselves instead of sendin it in for service
Obrigado, já vou trocar engrenagem da minha batedeira, excelente explicação!
Дякую, колега!!! Ваше відео допомогло у нашій роботі!
I really like this mixer…..fabulous green! Thx for the video. Very informative.
Thanks for watching!. i like this colour also. wouldn't mind getting one myself.
Bella riparazione anche io ho cominciato come riparatore in assistenza elettrodomestici braun krupps 40 anni fa capitava anche all epoca ma i materiali erano molto piu robusti di oggi❤❤
"Fan of the green" Lol, loving it
me to
A very informative and well shot video, exceptionally well done. Thank you for your effort and time!
Congratulations!
Nice job and helped me a lot
I find it is rather absorbing watching you work.
My Kitchen aid mixer was in storage for 25 years, it wouldn't run, turned out the the brushes were stuck and had corrosion where it had sat at the commutator. Once that was corrected, it worked fine, I went through the governor speed adjustment and put new grease in it.
How did you get it so clean? Did you use any cleaning products? Thanks for the informative video. 👍
It's why this machine is so expensive. Very well designed.
These KitchenAid mixers were originally designed Buy Hobart the company that makes all the big commercial mixers with they use in bakeries in restaurants. Everything they made was designed to be serviced.
My old one broke like this ages ago. Fixed it a long time ago and gave it to my parents
Enjoyed your video, you made it look so easy.❤
Thank you for the very helpful video!
thank you very much for your tutorial it allowed me to repair my machine
I've got a vintage one I have to fix, not sure of the exact age but it's a Hobart-made one, and by the speed control on it, it's pre-1979, Goodwill score lol
Thank you, you made the repair easy, You are a greAt tech.
Did the replacement but it Wong start at all
Could it be the Coals that need replacement ?
And great video 😊😊😊❤
I had the same story, I did not install the graphite brushes correctly.
shine a flashlight and see the correct placement of the brushes, in this video here 11:33

Great video, where did you get the parts from?
Great fix and awesome video
Parabéns 😂 gostei muito,!! Serrinha Bahia Brasil,!!!😂😂
You are a good Protestant Christian who knows about a sacrificial part. 🙂👊👍
Picked up an artisan that wouldnr turn off for free. Turns out it must have fallen over cause the speed lever was bent down at the knob, all i had to do was hold down on rhe top of the motor and pull up on rhw knob with my other hand really hard i was able to figure out the problem by using my mom's heavy duty kitchenaid as a reference. I even changed the grease in rhe beater mech with new mac1 racing grease
You lucky duck, im looking to buy one myself and they are costing over 500.
Professional job sir 🫡
Any recommendation as to what kind of food safe gear grease? Dismantled mine twice now to replace the gear, but haven’t removed the grease since I haven’t found a good safe replacement grease…
Kitchenaid sells it directly along with the gasket.
Great video thanks , but how? and with what chemical? Do you get al the old black grease of?
Excellent
Im guessing someone Wife is happy because of this video.
Happy Wife = Happy Life
Very useful
Thank you
Job well done!
Consider that the plastic gear may be used so it strips out if you get a finger or other body part stuck in the mixer. Better to fix a few dollar part than a trip to the ER
Interesting thought. 🤔
Holly molly that is a lot of grease :D😂😂😂
very nice and informative video, can you tell me where you bought this part?

Pretty cool man!
GR8T job iNtErEsTiNg & satisfying... thank you. Cheers from So.CA.USA 3rd House On the Right.
Question: why have a sacrificial part to save the motor should a jam occur instead of a racheting mechanism like in a drill gearbox/chuck? When it jams then the racheting mechanism engages and an audible sound is made to alert the user of jamming. No sacrificial part needed, no burnt out motor on jamming.
Considering how expensive some of these appliances are surely they can adapt a similar mechanism from a drill gearbox?
Best wishes always sir, I'm from Indonesia. Can you give me guidance on how to disassemble the Fomac B 15 planetary mixer. Please provide guidance, I really need it. Because I live in the mountains far from the city, and in my place there is no service person who can repair my mixer. Thank you sir, always healthy and always successful to you
Thanks for the video!
What kind of grease is needed for the mixer? I’m cleaning mine now through your vid but I didn’t contemplated that step before 🤣
You need food safe gear grease
Enjoyed your voice
Why plastic when a Brass gear would be a better design. The thing is built like a beast with an Achilles Heel gear. Well done. Enjoyed .
It's designed to break before you accidentally destroy the expensive motor or other more expensive gears.
Nice one..do u have the part number for that wormgear?
Tidy job
👍
Bravo!
but they say that Kitchen Aid Artisan has metal gears, but it turns out it’s still the same plastic.
Hi. Thanks for your videos, I always try reparation. One question: where can you get spare parts ? Online or shops ? Because it seems that diy repairs are discouraged..
online, loads of suppliers
can i have the link? thank you
They just don't make them like they use to, great recipe for people who have the newest ones. WELL DONE.❤
That mixer has alot more grease in it than I thought would be
@deandohertygreaser
thank you for the video. We managed to replace the parts, the paddle is turning, but the mincer attachment doesn’t turn. Any ideas? Please?
What did you use to clean the grease off the parts?
I was wondering the same thing!
Excellente
Wondering what they were mixing for that gear to burn right up...did mister homemaker decide to mix a small batch of nortar mix in the Mrs KitchenAid???
I am unable to remove the pin in the "spinning head". It seems to be stuck. Any suggestions on how I can get it to come out?
Hammer and parallel punch
For an expensive thing i wouldnt expect brass bushings. Maybe a load protection would be expected also. Would be interesting to see a much older model and compare quality
I have my mom's machine, original Kitchen Aid mixer from the late 50s. 6 kids, and 2 adults, plus she was a cook. All of the gears are metal. Direct drive unit. Now I just need to find the beaters and blade for it. I found the small glass mixing bowl, but I think the large one broke a long time ago. Oh, well. It's my treasure now.😊
@@penelopelgoss2520if you're talking a mixer that had a large and a small bowl I don't think it's a KitchenAid. You probably have an Oster, that the model had a somewhat similar name somewhat similar name. KitchenAid mixers only have one size bowl for each model.
@@garyszewc3339 Hi Gary, Ok, Thank you. It's packed right now but next time I have it out on the counter, I will check. Thanks!
My wife said I should get her a marital aid, when I came home with one of these she wasn't best pleased! Just no helping some people
I'm very curious can someone tell me how the self locking mechanism works on these British tiltheads since it was never a requirement here in the United States of America do we have to remember to lock the mixer ourself.
Probably was mixing something and jambed the blades and the steel gear chewed the nylon gear. Probably made to do that rather than burn up the motor if machine jambs on something solid. Like someone's hand. 😢
So much grease. Not saying it’s not necessary but my instinct would be to use a tiny fraction of that as surely it just flings off to the casing.
where did you bought the gear and whats the part number
You did not need to remove the bottom part, correct?
I love my Kitchen Aide Mixer. But the thing that I don't like is the plastic gears that is in the mixer. Plastic gear meshing with a metal gear just choose the plastic gear up. Don't get me wrong I get it there is a reason and a purpose for the plastic gears. I just think it would be a much better machine if it has all metal gears.
no, the plastic gear is a actually a sacrificial part. if you jam the beaters or over load the machine, the plastic gear will fail and save the machine from much more expensive damage.
@@deandohertygreaser I said in my comment that I get it and the reason why the plastic gear has it purpose.
Você tem uma máquina dessa pra vender
Liked it
Hello, please can you send the link or address of place where you bought the gear.
Thank you
Any idea of washing machine?
Where do I get parts in need of a circuit board
The wife definitely takes priority. Happy Wife, happy life. 😂
ممتاز
What did you use to clean the grease up so well?
Use petrol
Before even watching the video I'm guessing it's plastic gears or something..
Knew it.
Many machine tools (drills, lathes, etc) use plastic gears in the primary drive location to reduce noise, not a cost saving intent. It wouldn’t make sense to try to save pocket change in a multi-hundred dollar machine by using a cheap gear, which would ruin your reputation in the process. Any machine can be broken by abuse or just plain worn out over time. Also, it is a senseless waist of grease to load so much into the gear case like that. In the first few minutes of running, the gears will clear a path through the grease and fling any excess to the inside of the case. The gears will never see all that extra grease again. Simply applying a smear of grease to the worm gear and the worm wheel will suffice.
Yeah, it's a sacrificial gear, meant to wear in order to prevent the motor from burning out from the user trying to mix something the mixer couldn't handle.
You should see how much grease is loaded on the older models. They literally filled the entire casing with it.
I agree from a fiction standpoint it's not doing anything, but it also serves a heat transfer purpose
If that fiber gear wasn’t there and it was metal that gear built into the motor shaft would wear away first. Instead if a simple gear change it would need a new motor.
can one scan or mold the gear and replace it with a metal one?
read more comments
apparently its to save the motor in case of a stall!
rather this thing goes opposed to the whole rest of the chain!
How much was the part?
