Comment bashing appears from a hungarian: Álmos's name means "The man with a dream"... yeah... the traditional story goes by, that his mother, Emese dreamt about a totemistic spirit, the Turul bird copulating with her, then her womb was torn open after the act a small stream of river appeared, with great kings standing next to the water, from whom the first was Álmos. Álmos became a de facto leader during a time, when the hungarian tribes fled from a pecheneg invasion, but his son, Árpád was elected as leader by the 7 hungarian tribes in a blood oath. The tribal council decided, that they will move into the currently barely habited Carpathian Basin from the Pecheneg invasion, secured an alliance with some other tribes and got through the Carpathians. Álmos was too old to lead them, so he was ritualistically sacrificed before the hungarian horde finished it's crossing through the mountain. The hungarians conquered the territory, it's really complicated, since it involved a bunch of fuckery from a moravian succession crisis and the eastern franks calling them in as mercenaries, many of these things are still heavily debated. The thing that matters, that Árpád probably died fending off a german invasion in the 907 Battle of Pressburg. From that point, the Carpathians were secured by the hungarians and a long rivaling warlord era came, when hungarian tribes raided the neighboring countries, sometimes called in as auxiliaries by infighting german and italian rulers. In 955 Otto, the first Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire destroyed a large hungarian raiding host in the Battle of Lechfeld. During the battle many of the warlords and their warriors perished, what caused the Árpád family line to be able to dominate tribal politics again and secure centralized power. A House Árpád ruler, called Prince Géza started to reform the country into a western catholic one, while still maintained some pagan elements, but his son, Stephan I "the Saint" got balls deep into it. They story you refer to about the conversion of Árpád fighting against Álmos is not a thing. I think you misplaced it with the Koppány revolt. When Géza died, Stephan followed him as prince, but he was immediately questioned by the greek orthodox and pagan tolerant Koppány, who was the oldest living member of the Árpád family. Koppány revolted and was crushed by hungarian catholic and german troops, then Stephan began extensive and fanatical christian conversion efforts to root out paganism. During this effort, the Pope recognized him as a person worthy of a crown, so in new years eve of 1000/1001, he was crowned as the first king of Hungary. And... that's it.
You know... you'd think that we'd learn not to invite random mercenaries to solve a crisis... given how many times it "backfired" and just allowed said mercs to settle in the land they were supposed to help pacify... *cough* Anglo-saxons and teutonic knights from the top of my head did same thing *cough*
Finally starting form A! Btw you pronounced 'Magyar' very good, it basically Hungarian in Hungarian (like Deutsch in German). I have know idea from where they got the spelling 'Mogyer'. We don't even use that 'e' letter with 2 dots. Cheers from Hungary!
Old hungarian used the old turkic alphabet before moving to panonnia ,conquering the lands of modern hungary, turning christian, and using the latin alphabet,so I believe that might have been the way magyar would get transliterated from the old turkish alphabet
Same thing as Bulgars vs Bulgarian. One is the original nomad tribe invaders, the other is the derived name of the settled people's after intermingling with local inhabitants.
Koifish is such a beautiful youtube. It never feels like I'm listening to a mailbox when I watch one of his videos. And even though his jokes are somewhat bunger, they're still funny.
For anyone looking for this game but with a harder start you can actually play as the avars. For some reason if are playing as the avar duke in the carpathian basin and almos wins the invasion he will not take your land or titles but will take your vassals. So after he gives out counties he will give you all the vassals since you are duke of bihar and visegrad. from there you can subjugate the sloviens and then claim throne because you have 50% of hungary. You can win after that and then form a hybrid magyar-turkic culture and can choose whether or not you want to be tengri or taltoist.
I just witnessed the beggining of a true Hungarian-Viking friendship! Üdvözöllek barátom! Also did you know that our first king, Saint Stephen I. had Varegian guards, who were basically vikings? They were a very good selection, because they didn't speak german, or hungarian, so they could not have been bribed. Greetings from hungary!
I continued the Hungarian-Viking friendship in my game where the rulers of tribal Hungary became members of Björn Ironside's dynasty via some matrinelial marriage and a bunch of luck I presume, because honestly no idea how did it happen. Also greetings from Hungary :P
Hungary in ck3 I think is proof that there needs to be an "Eastern Lords" dlc or something that allows Turkic and Mongollic people in the tribal era to migrate (like a varangian adventure but it converts the culture)
Woot! New Koifish video! I’m really enjoying this series of doing all the starts, and I’m very excited I see you do a Spain start with Alfonso and get to interact with the Struggle a bit more!
When i played as almos and formed hungary i combined hungarian culture with avars that was left there. The combination of konni raids and horse lords is just perfect. Also granting pardons/releasing from prison gives hooks was very useful too and it let me feudalize much quicker cuz avars had some tech i needed
Krstjani is actually one of the best Christian faiths to be converted as the Kingdom of Hungary (and later the Empire of Carpathia) simply because it holds a very important holy site Ezstergom - formally the seat of the primate of the Catholic Church (or ahistorically if I'm specific)
From what I learned about Hungarians and alcohol after going to Hungary: they are a wine people. Seriously, wine is apparently Hungary's best kept secret.

I played as Hungary in 1012, I know a little less development work, but I formed West Slavia when I claimed Poland and took them out. It was a mighty Empire, that is, until the Mongolians actually conquered all the way through Byzantine, that's when I knew it was game over and quit lol

A bit of a generalizing statement there. Yes, the country got a lot of famous wineyards and areas with great renown and history.
