How did you read the thumbnail, because I am debating with Joey more than the show now
And y’all already disliking before the video even ended THIS IS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT
Edit: ok I completely didn’t realize my wording, when I said “non-binary people” in terms of garnet’s relationship I MEANT I saw people negating ruby and sapphire as lesbian, aka “they’re non-binary so it can’t be lesbian.” Non-binary lesbians exist and I did not want to deny their existence, so my apologies for poor word choice, I just didn’t like people saying they can’t be lesbian
And I meant peridot was aromantic, not asexual since asexual people can still have romantic attraction

Personally, I think that children's media should be held to higher standards than adult media, because of the demographic it's being shown to. Children are incredibly impressionable and we need to be interrogate what we're showing them. Because, realistically, the tv and RUclips are all most kids have.

    • @FredericChen
      @FredericChen  3 года назад +828

Oooh interesting point, never thought about it like that but you’re right they’re the most impressionable and maybe shows need to be more aware of what they’re showing

    • @botanicalitus4194
      @botanicalitus4194 3 года назад +101

depends what you mean to a higher standard. Do you mean a higher moral standard? Sure! But a higher standard for quality of writing and storytelling? Well, that's not realistic since it's much much MUCH harder to write a compelling and evocative storyline when you have to dumb things down and spill them out for your audience (and with kids shows you have yo do that cause they're kids, they might not get subtext and complex storylines)

    • @felicityb93
      @felicityb93 3 года назад +62

@@FredericChen This is something I think a lot about, because I want to be a school teacher for elementary school aged kiddios. What messages are we putting out into the world for children to absorb?! You can't tell your kid one thing, but then sit them in front of a tv that tells them something different. Obviously, no tv show is going to reflect every value every parent wants to instill in their kids (which is why we need to be limiting the amount of tv children are watching*), but ya know...
Perhaps we shouldn't be showing children tv shows where characters that are Black (coded) are the most aggressive on screen. Someone else brought this up in the comments, but a lot of Black people were soured by Sugalite being... Like That^TM.
(Thank you for mentioning that, btw. I find many people, when discussing this SU, try to skirt around the racial implications, and it's like... No, baby.)
Also, it's kinda weird how much of exposition comes from Garnet. It's giving magical n*g*o vibes. That ain't cute, either.
*I am perfectly aware of the fact that this is not feasible, because most parents work and don't have adequate resources for child care. This comment was made as a best case scenario, of sorts.

ATLA’s fillers are canon. they aren’t actually fillers but they are fillers at the same time. the island episode with zuko, azula, ty lee, and mai is a filler but it digs down into canonic backstories of the main side characters, characters relevant to the plot, characters we need to know about. the way ATLA deals with fillers is honestly an art. sometimes the “fillers” are heavy and deep, sometimes they’re light-hearted, but they always find some way to connect it to the plot.
another example: the episode where katara and sokka got sick. although the whole “sucking the frozen bodies of hibernating frogs” thing was filler-ish, the use of the episode was supposed to drag on suspense, when zuko, iroh, and june tried to track down the avatar in the same episode. even if that was a filler episode, it still had plot relevance.

Pink wasn't exactly redeemed though, at least not to me. She was steven's mom and she loved him and she did what she thought best, but that doesn't exclude her from the wrong she made and the friends she hurt, including steven. She was young and naive and they showed us that part of her, not as a redeeming point but as a statement, so that steven could then learn to accept that pain and move forward unlike pink, he ended what she started, but that doesn't redeem her, nor in my opinion make her better (that being said I do think she was more caring and open minded than the other diamonds so yeah she was morally better than the others) but nobody is perfect, the diamonds made the effort to change after all, even if change is hard, which is what matters. @@mei3786 Coding, in this context, refers to the act of giving human characteristics to non-human (fictional) characters.
In Steve Universe, the gems are not human; they're aliens. They don't have a race or a gender, because those are purely human constructs (this is why you will see some people refer to the gems as non-binary characters). However, based upon the way they're drawn, the characteristics/attributes given to them by the writers, and sometimes even the people who voice them, we are to understand that certain gems are to be thought of as certain races.
And yes, this is on purpose.
Characters like Garnet and Sugalite (to name a few) are coded as Black. Their fusion is just a combination of passion and a bit of wildness (I don’t know of a better word, sorry). Pearl holds herself with a lot of grace and dignity and is intent on following rules and being super precise, so it just seems that the gems she fuses with will have a little bit of that. I don’t think that the show meant that two black coded gems fusing is less proper than a black coded gem and a white coded gem, and that it’s more based on the gems personalities. I cannot begin to thank you enough for not calling the diamonds "space n*zis" like some people in the fandom seem to love doing. As a Jewish person, this annoys me to no end! I mean, it's one thing to use a term like that ever, it's an entirely different story with just how WRONG it is! The diamonds (and the entire gem civilization) are clearly modeled after European colonialism/imperialism. Even the "examples" most people give of why the gems are n*zis exhibit direct parallels with European colonialism. The human zoo is a direct reference to Belgium's history. The strict caste system of gem society is very reminiscent of similare systems found throughout history in Europe. The specific form of genocide the gems partake in is far more akin to the genocide of the native american peoples than it is to the Holocaust. The building of gem colonies is well... do I even need to point that one out? At any rate, I think I've made my point. I think the part that horrifies me the most about this isn't peoples' flagrant misuse of the word "n*zi", it's how willing people are to ignore the horrors of European colonialism. At any rate, great video and thank you for talking about some of the ways this show does miss the mark a bit!

Yes, you can like something with their flaws. I wish the fans would stop putting Steven on a higher pedestal. I like the show too, but they were things that were never explained and not having so much freaking filler episodes.
However, I still applaud the show for their LGBT+ rep and being incredible for having a complex plot. Just wish things were more neatly done and not rush to fit in an 11 min or 22 min episode.

I'm fairly certain the reason Garnet's fusions lean so heavily in the direction of whoever she's mixed with is because of how she's made. She's made from two archetypes. An elegant and cold princess and a hot headed butch. So when she mixes with someone, whoever they are will amplify one of those two personalities. You aren't mixing with Garnet, the level headed leader, you're mixing with ruby and sapphire.
So if you mix Ruby with Amethyst, you get a hot headed party girl
and if you mix sapphire and pearl, you get a "controlled" and "elegant" person.
It does make sense, it just has unfortunate implications because the purely elegant person whose most visible is Pearl, who is pale skinned, but there's also Sapphire who is not visible but involved, and she is also depicted with skin darker than her hair with full lips, which codes her as dark skinned as much as Amethyst is coded.
Besides, I doubt this did any harm to any child's perception of people with skin as dark as mine, it would be hard to read Sardonyx as anything other than black herself, I think she literally has dark brown skin and a non-white voice actor. To me, all I see is disaster lesbian vs refined lesbian.

Yes!!!!! This is what I’m saying!!! (context for where I’m knowledgeable: I want to be a storyboarder for animation and I am currently in art school). There is a certain amount of leeway for animation but this a professionally animated show, not some animated short from a person who is just starting out so there needs to be consistent character models. Also for a plot driven by three warriors and a war: there needs to be fight scenes that feel well-choreographed. I watched Steven Universe over the summer just to see what it was about (also for Spinel) and there is a lot of basic filler, almost from the very beginning.
For me, with the characters I liked them but I liked the idea of them. They each had their own personalities that were fun but they felt shallowly developed. Rebecca Sugar and the other writers took a very very VERY soft approach to conflict. Like, Amethyst and Greg in the first half of season one. Their relationship is kind of chilling to watch. Amethyst almost refusing to let Greg grieve and dealing with her own grief by adding more trauma with her shape shifting was not good. Which is fine for a kid’s show if only it wasn’t only about Steven in the end. It’s been a while since I watched it but sometimes that doesn’t matter when the long-lasting impression I got from the episodes was that things can only happen for Steven and around Steven.
this is a jumble of thoughts so if you understand what I’m saying that’s cool and if you don’t then I get that too.
I don’t like how just because Steven is the titular character, everything single thing has to revolve around him. Cause are you telling me that these three gems (which I would say are hmm at least a several thousands of years old) and Greg, an adult man who runs a business and has had plenty of life experience, have almost no autonomy of their own without Steven being there? Steven is like twelve in this show,, that is terrifying thought which I don’t think comes up enough from any of the adults in the show.

Because my family is too broke to send me to art school I decided to teach myself animation. Right now I'm working on my own show called Terraria Tales. The story boarding was done at the back of my maths exercise book, the backgrounds were done on MS Paint and all the animation was done uing Flipaclip (all free btw).

@@timtam3730 OOH RAD!!!! Yes!!! That goes with another point!! How did they not even deal with the repercussions of the giant space war and genocide well in any of the many many many episodes??? We could think about Avatar: The Last Airbender which had three seasons with like 20 episodes each and dealt with the genocide of the air nomads in I think episode two or three. Which there are still problems with the show,, at least the audience saw that they weren’t going to ignore or gloss over the stuff that has happened as a result of the war.
In Steven Universe, the corrupted gems were like an afterthought. Like “sure yeah that did happen but now they’re big scary monsters so while they were our friends that we fought with for hundreds of years, we aren’t going to attempt to help them until Steven says so”
(Also that’s so cool about your show!! What’s it about?)

I do have to agree that Steven Universe does have a lot of filler episodes in the beginning seasons, but as it starts to develop each episode has some bit of lore or information about the gems or the world of Steven Universe. Like in the frybo episode, this episode kinda explains gem magic/technology (whichever you think it is) with the crystal shards possessing the suit which somewhat explains the gem’s magic ( but it’s kinda weird because no other crystal shards in the show was ever shown to have this power). But this episode does show that in this episode it explains a little more about gems as aliens.
Edit: Why does Frederic explanations for Lapis being abusive kinda sounds like Shane Dawson's reasoing for doing black face, being a pedophile, and etc 😐

I never understood how fusions work. Not as in “I don’t get how two gem make one gem.” I don’t understand anything about how it combines the personality. (And I say this as someone who would put SU in my top three favorite TV shows)
Mainly, I never understood why Garnet’s personality is almost never presents her personality in any of her fusions.
Amethyst is very clearly the main presenter in Sugilite. You could argue that its also partly Ruby, but then where’s Sapphire in all that?? Plus we didn’t even get introduced to Ruby at that point. Pearl takes over the fusion for sure in Sardonyx. You can’t tell me for even a moment that Ruby or Sapphire or Garnet is in there. That’s just Pearl but now she’s a talkshow host. Sunstone to me feels very strange. I personally don’t think it fits Steven or Garnet, let alone both of them.
Part of it feels like Garnet’s role in the fusion is “TV Personality personality.” Like, Sardonyx is presented as a talkshow host/comedian. Sunstone (to me) is presented as a weird mix of a kid show character and an infomercial person. (Sugilite is Nicki Minaj and Garnet is Estelle is also partially an argument towards it.) So why doesn’t Garnet present more when she’s just Garnet?? Outside of fusion, Garnet’s only time she reflects that kind of personality is in Steven’s dream in Chille Tid when she shows up and gets applause. (The other option is Garnets fusion-presenting trait is “This gem starts with the letter S :)”)
Especially I don’t get why Garnet’s the “quiet one” but most of the “quiet one” fusions are Pearls (with the exclusion of Sardonyx, the one where Garnet is present.) Especially when Pearl is, in my opinion, kinda talkative.
Like, Pearl and Amethyst combine and make Opal, who then has FIVE lines in the entire show (not including the movie). I feel like Opal’s personality and Sardonyx’s personalities would make much more sense if they swapped. Pearl and Amethyst making Sardonyx, the chatty comedian? Checks out. Pearl and Garnet making the silent and elegant Opal? Makes sense.
I also never got how Rainbow Quartz with Rose and Rainbow Quartz with Steven are as different as they are. Like, I get that Steven’s his own person and all that but they’re almost opposite each other in my opinion. I do think Rainbow with Steven is a better fit personality for a Pearl fusion than Rainbow with Rose though.
I kinda understand Alexandrite and Obsidian being unclear on personality due to the sheer number of members each one has, but also kinda confused on how 3-gem fusions (Sardonyx, Sugilite, Sunstone) are the most
talkative ones but then you add one more gem and they become quiet again?
I refuse to think about Steg.
The only fusions that I feel make sense for their personality and context are Malachite, Stevonnie, and Smoky Quartz. Other than that, I don’t get how any of them make sense as the combinations of their parts.

Ruby is outgoing, emotional, passionate, hotblooded, chaotic. SO when amethyst who is much more in line with Ruby fuses with Garnet its a 2-1 vote for chaos and hotblooded rage. I've always loved the show for what it says for young boys. It really normalized the act of having emotions, Steven in the show cries unlike many other shows where the characters rarely express grief and sadness in the way Steven does. He's very empathetic and has a seemingly passive weapon he has the ability to heal and such, things you would usually see a girl having. I feel like that aspect of it makes it healthy to boys growing up because it normalizes emotions and experience of them. I liked it's message of empathy and blah blah especially for a show which main character is a boy.
However the downside of it is that because the show is about mental health stuff that they try and make everyone forgive everyone when not everyone deserve forgiveness. I think it would be better if Steven learned that not everyone deserves forgiveness, lessons like you can forgive a person but you don't have to let them back into your life. Like the other sides of forgiveness. The message you should forgive everyone no matter what is toxic and stupid. Especially when they try to redeem literal space Nazi's with that same message.
However despite that I still love the show and think its great in many aspects but I believe its “forgive everyone!” message is a bad one. It would be a different story if all the characters weren't bad enough to not be able to be forgiven but that honestly isn't the case.

The reason the pacing is so weird is mostly due to CN's interference. Rebecca Sugar really did want to spend more time developing all of these plotlines, but was always forced to water it down. The one time she said "no, we're doing this" (Garnet's wedding) and wouldn't back down, her show got cancelled and she had to end it an entire season early, leading to the Change Your Mind arc.
It's a valid critique, but it's worth mentioning *why* things turned out the way they did. Network interference ruins a lot of things unfortunately *coughcoughinfinitytrainshouldhaveabookfiveCOUGH*.
*ALSO I won't speak on the racial stereotype thing because I'm not black but I will say the "concrete" design (the gem that can't read) was drawn by Ian Jones Quartey, a black man. Just thought that was worth pointing out.

I really liked this critique video, probably one of the more casual ones I’ve watched! The topics you talked about were nicely spread into parts. Maybe going a bit side tracked here and there, but moved on when you realized it was going on for too long.
I really appreciate the fact you stayed more neutral, whereas other critics take the whole show down, get rather aggressive or stay ignorant to anyone who points something out that doesn’t suit their opinions.
I did want to give some more information about the animation style being inconsistent, mostly in the mid-seasons.
This was actually not the fault of the animation studio (Rough Draft Korea), but of the storyboard artists. There wasn’t a set of character models as you already mentioned, which resulted in the artists drawing the characters in their own style (as shown on 40:14). The storyboards also were roughly drawn resulting in big inconsistencies in the animation.
This can be seen in a few episodes (for example Same Old World from season 3), surrounding Peridot and Lapis at the barn, where the storyboards were made so messy that their hair ended up being way too big.
The only episode where the animation was consistent was in Mindful Education, which was co-storyboarded by guest Takafumi Hori. Hori delivered clean storyboards making the animation process more consistent.
This sadly isn’t the same case with the other story-boarders. If there had been character models the show would’ve been a lot more consistent, but alas, we didn’t get that. It did end up giving us some very memeable frames, so we’ve been able to get something out of it!
I didn’t think I’d end up typing so much, whoops. To anyone that did read all of this, thank you for showing your interest and I hope you have a great day/night!

I haven't seen the show. I don't really want to. But from the clips I've seen, both Jasper and Lapis were abusive. Lapis had more control when trapping the fusion, and partially could've been motivated by the fact of how dangerous she might've viewed Jasper to be despite her weaker state. Jasper gets on the ship thingy where Lapis and Steven were chilling after Lapis says she can't deal with seeing the ocean very well. Jasper admits to stalking the two, and after Lapis says the relationship was destructive, Jasper says she'll shatter Steven. Followed by Lapis launching Jasper off the boat.
Both Jasper and Lapis were victims and abusers to each other. And Lapis' PTSD probably made her struggle quite a lot with impulse and emotion control. But idk.
Lapis has a dope design, and I find the portrayal of her PTSD to be very interesting. As well as her being potentially coded Autistic from what I've heard. But I can't deny she did horrible things.

If you haven't yet, you should totally make a video about the She-Ra reboot!! I thought it was great, one of my fave shows now. I'm curious what you have to say!

yall let's talk abt the island episode where sadie literally trapped lars and steven so that she can have quality time with lars but ended lars being the one apologizing even though sadie was in the wrong too.

I started watching the show when it first came out and I was like 11 at the time. That show really helped me accept myself. But MANNNNNN it was so annoying when I had to wait months for a new episode. I stayed loyal until the end tho. I litterally grew up with the show and it has a special place in my heart ^^

Pearl is one of my favorite characters she started off grieving, feeling she is now nothing because rose is gone, and using fusion to feel complete leading her to hurt garnet. But she becomes happier as she cares for steven, telling him all she knew about his mother (at least all she physically could), her becoming her own gem, standing up to peridot when she's undermined just for being a pearl, becoming confident as she is while realizing how rose wasn't as good as a person as she once thought! I do hope her and bismuth gets married!

I think Steven universe future was such an important showing of mental health and the toll of trauma and it was so needed after everything.

i’m so happy to have found your channel! i was actually on a binge on steven universe criticism, as i was a huge fan but realised how lousy the writing was. the other criticisms for this show felt like it wasn’t even constructive anymore and was JUST to trigger people who liked the show. this video is like a breath of fresh air, just like your channel! your channel has such a comforting aura
