  • John Edwards explains why his sculpture looks the way it does. Thanks to Yvette Harrison for the motivation to do this.

I agree that there is no need to explain one's own work however there often seems to be a need for viewer education, I hope they appreciate it... Love your work John,... very intuitive and expressive.

Thanks. I do have two videos showing how these get built. I should probably cut some of that footage in here. Good suggestion. Be well. Thanks again. John

You certainly leave alot to the imagination john.. I probably find myself too, wanting to finish your work..lol. The explanation helps alot.. I'm interested in the building of the mass. Which you have given me tremendous insight just watching. And certainly some new ideas. Your process shows us that once you start to get close, the piece can takes us wherever it's meant to go. You're right our mind wants to complete what's in front of us. You've got me intrigued enough to want to see more of your work. Great job explaining why. I'm glad you did!

I was on the fence (leaning towards liking your work, but not quite sure), but after your explanation, my mind is blown!!! I’m so glad you educated me as to how my own brain works! I now realize the reason I was on the fence is the “discomfort” of a static figure fooling my brain into believing it was dynamic. You certainly have my attention and I will attempt to incorporate similar elements into my future art. You sir have taught me more in this video than I’ve learned in hours of art instruction-I am grateful! Thank you!!!

You're very kind. And yours is certainly the most gracious and effusive comment I've ever received online or in my life. Thank you very much. I'd love to see your art sometime. Sincerely, John Edwards

I absolutely love your sculptures and they influenced my recent work at university where I am in my 3rd and final year of fine art.
Everyone is open to critique but never apologise for the way you work!

Thank you. I've never been told I've influenced anybody's art.
Is there some place I can Google to see some of your work? Thanks, again. John Edwards

You are a talented artist and shouldn't have to explain your work to anyone. Self expression is very personal not everyone is going to get you or your work. Also I think that art should move you, both positively and or negatively. If the artist does a good enough job even if some hate his work he has succeeded in making you take notice. Keep doing you......

Hey I really like your sculptures! I'm starting out in sculptures. In your video "AMDIFINUERAE," the lighting has a big impact on your pieces. Do you put a lot of thought in to where you place your lighting? It seems like it! Also, some of the lighting would make the white plaster almost green or redish. Have you ever considered using colored lightbulbs? Thanks! You are an inspiration to me!

Thank you. The quick answers are A. No, I don't consider lighting effects when I'm working. They come as a surprise later and B. I have indeed thought of shooting photos using colored gels. I even have the gels. Just haven't gotten around to doing it yet. Now that you've inspired me, ill do that this weekend. Seriously. Thanks
