Beautiful, so lovely to watch this, be a part of it, like - to see such an intimate sketch of this artist's life. Wonderfully captured, visualised, edited and directed.
"It is actually fantastic to do it for a living...." " There is not much else to do, is there?" To see a man so absorbed in his work/art is so fulfilling. It is not what we do or how beautiful it turns out or how people receive it, really. It is this sense of total fulfilment. I hope I would be able to say at the end of my life: "... There is not much else to do , is there?"
Thank you for the series. You've just offered me half an hour's sheer happiness, once again, at a time when it would be too easy to despair of mankind.
Maan! this is just gold. Love the series, love the storytelling in the episodes. especially this one. It keeps me motivated to keep working on my own paintings and evolving as an artist. Please keep making this episodes. it helps alot!
So refreshing, such a humble gentleman, simple, inspiring and most of all a real craftsman, most probably the archetype of what Renaissance "artists" used to be, I draw my hat very low to you Sir
Absolutely marvelous. I didn't know a thing about this man or this process, and now I am in love with both, plus the Orkneys. That's a lot of love! :-D
I am learning so much about artists in this area, it's absolutely fabulous! This particular piece made me cry at the end. I absolutely love this work and this artist, his love of his land and his work comes through, it's simply love and as an artist, I have had so much fun relating to different parts of the process of each artist you are presenting. Very grateful!
I love Norman Ackroyd's work. I too am an artist and it's very refreshing to see pride , skill and craftsmanship in the work. These works are almost like Chinese ink works from the Ming dynasty and I wonder if Ackroyd is influenced by Oriental styles. Also I enjoyed looking at the process and wonder ; what happens to the plates? Once the printing run is done. The plates themselves are a work of art, there is a lot of potential there.
Love these videos fascinating I've worked all my life and retired at 60 I've always done artwork as a hobby....but with retirement money I had a little studio built I'm loving it my medium is airbrush art .these videos are very inspiring.....I liked at the end when he started to be happy with his work...there's no feeling like that for an artist.
Sorry, I just came across this and don't know anything much about the artist or his work. Do people buy the printout, or the copper plate itself? I must say, the beauty of his art work is just captivating.
+truebluekit it's "printouts" (print editions) that people buy. Usually there is a limited amount of them made from each plate while the plate itself stays with the artist or is even destroyed (as in case of litho stones) so that no more editions could be made. As multiple copies of the same image are available, it makes art prints cheaper than original paintings. Contemporary printmaking enjoys a sort of revival, hope you'll discover many more amazing works! If it helps, here's my collection of printmakers on Pinterest www.pinterest.com/trelunatic/printmakers-of-the-world/
This could have been filmed in 1700, nothings changed from the traditional process, he's stuck in his own happy time period whilst crappy modern life goes on outside....
3:09 ,thank god there is some sanity.. the glimpse and promis of NY is zero inviting.. bigger cities are not necessarily better, and even opportunity wise bigger means a need for bigger connection and contact, compition etc... it never and will never attract me over a mid size town. and I am neither from Leed nor UK.
I was fortunate enough to have had Norman as an instructor at VCU in 1969. Seeing this docunmentary about him is wonderful!

'simple' is not a word I'd use for him, that's another term for dumb
maybe but he's very coloniser vibes aye, saying his rocks on the English sea are the edge of the world..whats wrong with him
Been so absorbed with this series of art documentaries, this one was great and we got to see the final (almost) product at the end.

I think they keep the plates? Can't they be used again? If not it's worth a fair bit in scrap metal

I hear a distortion in his voice, like the backdrop warps as he speaks. Amazing footage and assemblage.

Do people ever paint on top of the print?
+Hypatia4242 Yes, Louise Bourgeois for example.
+Hypatia4242 I'm sure they do. Printmakers experiment with all sorts of mixed media
