3:38 Kudos to Cavett for picking him up on the word "Rabelaisian" and asking for an alternative word so that we schmucks can get his point. And even more kudos to Allen for his swift riposte! (I mean response)
I love all the films he mentioned, however I am sure that for an artist, it's exactly the wrong thing to do, to be unaware of others' art. This fear of influence is just nonsense. Seeing how others can think outside the box is inspiring and doesn't negatively impact one's creativity and originality in the least - especially if one is in control of it.
You are so very sure of your words, it seems. I mean, that's fine. But for you. Those things you say apply to you or to people like you. Not for all, mind you.
He wrote the same story over and over. Yes, he was visually and stylistically influenced by others. But he LOVES that story about the much older man and the young woman, or underage child.
have nothing against the other celebs that were on this show but is this channel ever going to show the Dick Cavett shows where he interviews Jackie Gleason or Art Carney? How about any Honeymooners actors that were part of the main cast? These are rarities much like the other Dick Cavett ones.
Fortunately, Woody Allen went beyond his early farces -but it would be nice to see a revival or integration on some level in his current self-presentation and his work of that signature whimsy and absurdity of old.

You're probably right. That's why he failed in this business. :)
So, are you just an armchair philosopher, or an actual artist/filmmaker? There IS a difference!
He described Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex (but were afraid to ask) perfectly except there were no musical sequences.
00:16 - Important context to consider

as if he wasn't tremendously influenced by Bergman

@@jennifermariejoyce Only in a couple, desperate man hater.
Chaplin, Bergman, Chekov, Doestoyevsky...huge influences on Woody.

Spiders aren't insects.

And Quentin Tarantino, who's influenced by everyone, wins. Sorry, Woody
He’s only influenced by his own work. The old cookie cutter approach. #agegap #creepyasswoodyallen
