    For many years, 100 North Main was crowned with a large illuminated "UP Bank" sign, visible for miles, The sign was dismantled in late 2005 due to the acquisition of Union Planters National Bank by Regions Bank. As of April 2007, the sign had not been replaced and the tower's top cap is a blue, empty box -giving the building a somewhat abandoned appearance. Because of the "UP Bank" sign, many Memphians mistakenly believe that 100 North Main was the headquarters building of Union Planters, although the bank's actual headquarters was at 67 Madison Avenue and, later, 6200 Poplar Avenue.
    The building was constructed with a revolving restaurant atop the main roof. This restaurant operated under several different owners and names (Top of the 100 Club, Pinnacle, etc.), but is now vacant. Behind the restaurant was a Japanese garden which closed in 1971. A few large stones and a concrete path are all that remain of the garden today.
    The building has been condemned by Shelby County Environmental Court since late 2015 when it was discovered that chunks of concrete were falling from the building's exterior walls, as well as the elevators being inoperable and the fire safety systems not being up to code or functional.
    On January 8, 2018, the current owner of 100 North Main, New York-based Townhouse Management Co., made public plans to convert the building into a 550-room Loews Hotel with 220 apartment units. The developer is also planning to build a new, 34 story office tower on an adjacent property.

      I totally agree with turning the UP building into downtown apartments and hotel. What I don't get is why would the developers want to waste their money building office spaces since most white collar work can be done at home?

      Aside from all the social and economic effects, your "white-collar-work-can-be-done-from" mentality has manifested in buildings such as this. Not everyone of these buildings will enjoy success from the quick fix, i.e. conversion into a hotel/apartments. Most cities provide incentives, for example tax breaks, to businesses to locate in the city. Now, all these buildings serve as a blight on the city, provide zero revenue to the city, and remove people who could patronize local businesses while at work.
      Don't carp when taxes increase as a result, all so you can hide within the cocoon of your home, not associating with anyone. Numerous factors contribute to scenes such as this, but to ignore the impact of "working from home" reveals a very professional perspective.

I use to explore this place on Saturdays when he was seeing clients since it wasnt full of people like a weekday would be..Can still hear the exact sound of the elevators when they would reach the floors. As always you did a great job, what a lesson in how to blow a few million dollars real quick, this was a great building up until not that long ago, I have been to law offices there, and they were the most plush in the city, like the ones shown in the firm. The round part was a restaurant that revolved, 360 degrees in one hour. The reason the front door was tore up, and the windows broken out was because they had a fire in the abandoned building not that long ago.
    To other comments, when the streets of Memphis are quiet, that's a good thing around here (hahaha). Downtown Memphis is doing very well, that's why this building will have to come down, too much competition, trendier new places.
    Spa Guy your videos are the best, thanks so much.

    • @jackkennedy6837
      @jackkennedy6837 5 лет назад +2

      Mark Thompson The fire didn’t shatter the glass, there was only fire in a couple floors. The people who break in break stuff including most of the glass within. (One group of which set the fire on only a couple floors) and the come down of the building was due to asbestos not trendier places.

    • @davester1970

      If I were a developer with a $20 million reno budget, I would convert that building into either downtown apartments, hotel space or a apartment/hotel hybrid. There is going to be less demand for office buildings in the near future as many companies are discovering that most white collar office work can be done from the comfort of one's home thanks to the current pandemic.

    I lived in Memphis when this building was constructed. It was said to have no structural steel and was erected using only reinforced concrete. At the time it was the tallest building ever to use that method. Concrete deteriorates over time and may have played a part in its failure. It had the fastest elevators in the city. On the express elevators that serviced only the upper floors, Your ears would pop during the trip from the main floor. They were either Westinghouse or General Electric, i'm not sure.
    It might be a difficult demolition if that becomes its fate. This would probably make the Clark Tower on the east side of the city the tallest at 34 floors. How did you get the drone footage to be so smooth and steady? Excellent video.

    I hate to see so much of Memphis' historic infrastructure destroyed, especially since much of it will just be thrown away, but let's be honest: this was never a very pretty building, and if someone can build something downtown that is more attractive and looks better coming over the bridge, then so be it. For instance, Hilton has done wonders with the old rail terminal, turning it into a hotel and there's even a Malco there. This is the kind of thing that needs to happen in a medium-size city like M-Town.

    Hello Billy got another investigation for ya I know I'm always coming up with something but this one doesn't add up and perhaps you have already the answer in an interview of Lisa Marie she made a remark to the fact that Elvis' body was at Grace Land for 3 days after he died and that she "somehow found comfort with that" another mysterious question : if his body was taken via ambulance to Baptist Hospital as claimed how did Elvis' body remain at Graceland for 3 days after he died ? This was a statement Lisa Marie made herself ?

      Diana, She was about 9 years old so she has no idea about how long it was.. He passed on Tuesday was pronounced around 4:30pm was back at Graceland on display by 12pm the next day Wednesday and placed in the Mausoleum Thursday close to 5pm.. So her recollection of what happened is not accurate..

    This video is 3 years ago, sad the 100 N. Main build (built about the same times the former world trade center in New York) is in bad shape. I remember back in the 70's into the 90's even at night you could reconise the building for the red illumination of the UP Bank sign. Everyone referred it as the UP bank building being the tallest building in Memphis and Shelby county. Sad like a lot of things in Memphis including this building go to pot.

    Tell me about the Sterick

    • @swinde
      @swinde 6 лет назад

      I understand that the Sterick building is also abandoned. It is a much older building, built in 1928 and opened in 1930. It even had spittoons in the hallways for tobacco chewers.

      I live in South Florida now, and last visited Memphis in 1998. I have been in the building many times in the 50s through the 80s when I lived there. The lobby was quite impressive, It was mostly law offices and a few jewelers back then with a few retailers on the ground floor. I think this was the building that had a blind vendor in the lobby area. I can't remember what products he sold, but he could tell the difference between $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills by running them through his fingers along the part where "The United States of America" was printed. These words were slightly raised and different on each of the bills.

      As I recall the Union Planters Bank headquarters was at Madison and Front Sts. This building may have had a branch in it. The restaurant at top that revolved at one time had a woman's name....maybe Diane's or something like that.
