Bloody hell I love this man. Absolutely fantastic stuff but this time I had actually read up on the 845 before watching the video so I didnt learn as much but it helped to validate my knowledge. Thanks Gary, God bless m8.
Professor Gary strikes again! I actually think I understood most of what you said. Safe to say I'll likely be trading my Pixel 2 XL for the Pixel 3 XL in 2018. The 845 sounds like a beast.
If you are considering only speed, it is staggering to see Apple fans are asking if this chip can beat the A11, while some phones have already beaten A11 with SD835 let alone with 845.
saketh chilukuri it costs lots of money to implement L Cache memory, also it is difficult to implement them accordingly such that all cores get proper access through it, Apple chips does so bcoz of using less cores(2 high performance cores) and using more transistors in their chip(which too costs alot more)...Qualcomm always focus on being balanced rather than giving just more raw performance.
Chen G upgrading things that matters. GPU, DSP, Image processor (who else can encode 4k 60p together with HDR) and moderately CPU). Iphone has three times single core CPU performance compared to 835 but do you see any situation where iphone performs three times better than phone with a11?
Do you see any situation where people need to take 4k video at all? Faster cores means you can do the same old things faster with less delay and less power, so of course it's meaningful, and to everyone, all the time. A lot of them actually, converting images and videos. Whenever you press "share" on iOS it does that.
The SPU is a fantastic implementation! Chip-level security is not only good for security, but also for privacy as well. Let's see how it goes in actual usage. The X20 modem is also an exciting news! I didn't expect that they would include that in this chip. Yes, it is an overkill by today's standard data delivery rates. But it is also much power-efficient. So we can take advantage of that power efficiency, even if we cannot enjoy gigabit speeds. Just waiting for this video! Very well done, Gary! Pulling all these in just 10 minutes is outstanding! Kudos to Gary and team AA!
Qualcomm's modems do behave better at the fringes of reception too so those upgrades aren't lost. Imagine not being able to pull up a map in the boonies or being able to make an emergency call.
The current Exynos chip already has the ability to support 4K at 60fps but wasn't enabled in the S8/Note 8 to keep parity with the Snapdragon models, so I would say it will be the same with the S9, not the other way around. Historically the Exynos has been the better chipset, with cooler temps and more power efficient, only being behind on the GPU front.
I wish that they had a version of the thin light laptops that weren't so thin and Light. If you added an extra centimeter to a thin and light laptop you could have a week-long battery.
great video! i just have 1 question related to CPUs in general not just this one.. why is it considered an achievement if the cache size reaches just couple of MBs while the storage/memory tech have reached a very advanced level & we can get GBs of space in the smallest components?
In Samsung's case, wasn't there a rumor going around before the 845 was announced that Samsung were buying so many of them? All of the extra processors on this SoC would explain why, maybe.
Hi Gary, thanks once again for your job: listening to your videos is always giving me something. Could you do a similar review on the snapdragon 660 and on the 450? They both appear surprisingly good (for their respective classes 600 and 400)!!!
Why doesn't Qualcomm release two flagship processors each year? What I mean is that one will power the budget flagships from OnePlus and Xiaomi and the other will power more costlier phones from Samsung, HTC, Google, etc.
I think the exynos was held back by the 835 on some specs and the same goes for Quick change. And then with Qualcomm specific soc features Samsung has to develop similar features for exynos. Maybe that's why Samsung has been working on snapdragon socs lately.
Great video. Would have loved to heard more on how it’s expected to compare to Apples A11 SoC. Tech analysts keep saying Apple is 2-2.5 years ahead (I believe Gary even said the same) than it’s competitors like Qualcomm. Curious if this is holding true or in what areas Qualcomm is getting ahead. Not a fan of Qualcomm’s business tactics but for my android friends they don’t have much choice.
by the time the 845 is released for the consumer Apple would be almost ready for their A12, so nope. I think the 845's multicore score will be similar to the A11, but single core score is still way behind.
lmao no. Single core isnt everything. The 845 will score 9000 on Geekbench, the A11 scores 10000. Apple does 2 Big cores, ARM does 4 big cores, which is ok. it doesnt saturate apps because most can use 4 cores rather well. the A9 scores 4000.
most apps will just utilize 1 single core anyway, even intel beats amd because their single core performance is way ahead of ryzen. Multicore is only useful when you multitask, which is still not a thing on smartphone. When is the last time you watched a youtube video while rendering a movie and sending whatsapp on a smartphone?
Thank you for the video. The thing that I liked the most in 845 are changes in memory hierarchy. Finally L3 cache which is accessible by every cpu core and even 3mb system cache. I believe it will be a much bigger upgrade compared to what was 835. Of course it won't be enough to catch up to raw CPU performance of apple A11 but qualcomm doesn't need it as long as phones with it can do the same things as phones with A11(like 4k 60p recording) while staying cool(no need for 810 fiasco)and available in time for phone manufacturers.
Paperclown I am wondering how do you even know how young I am and what I am going to do... Geez... I am asking Gary because of his knowledge. I am curious to understand his personal opinion. However, SD845 does not impress me anyhow. The 820 and 835 were interesting topics to me, but this one is not.
How do u get snap drgon on your LG android phone. It appeared out of no where 2 days ago on my phone. I think ive been hacked through a router or laptop in my home?
Great video! I see the benefits of having everything on the same chip, but I am a little worried about differentiation. When everyone is using this thing you basically have most of the phone. The only thing the brands can try to be different is design and screen really... With Samsungs current near-monopoly on OLED it is all looking very bland. I'm looking forward to seeing what companies do with this thing though: Surface Andromeda please
Fantastic explanation and what a brilliant Snapdragon 845 is I just hope Samsung Galaxy S 9 or Note 9 they're gonna put them for their UK mobile devices cheers and peace
I got a little confused at the end. Is the Snapdragon for phones or computers? If it is for computers, when will we see a chipset optimized for Linux. Right now I am using the Intel Xeon processor and it works pretty well with Linux. Oh and the Nvidia graphics card seems to have no problems. I am waiting for my Galaxy phone to arrive (S10e).
Next time... Gary explains the meaning of life!

When Qualcomm announced 845 , the first thought in my mind is where is Gary to explain everything and here you are!
Excellent video. Happy Christmas Gary 🎅
Simon Says Thanks, and a Happy Christmas to you.
Simon Says. Christmas already passed.
Fun Fact: Did you know that you can use "Radeon" word to Adreno *(Radeon is AMD GPU)*
who's here after 865 announced

I'm surprised Qualcomm haven't come out with their own brand of phone running android I bet it would be impressive....
The only playlist I watched in Android Authority is Gary Explain
This was very informative and engaging. Really, really nice video. Well done.
It says android authority but they are not actually biased, it feels natural, true delivery of information... we need more of this channel.
I learned many things from you Mr.Gary! Keep up the good work!
Awesome stuff Mr Gary
great video, you are a man of exceptional knowledge!!
Hey Garry. Can you do an ep on nVMe storage vs UFS. To end the 5 year debate on Reddit?

Again Gary, great video as always.
Thanks for the info. Please keep up the great work
Hopefully in 2018 Android Authority will film in 4k
Out of interest, do you watch our videos on a 4K device?
Android authority is the best channel when it comes to information and reviews
Best series on RUclips.
If you are considering only speed, it is staggering to see Apple fans are asking if this chip can beat the A11, while some phones have already beaten A11 with SD835 let alone with 845.
Why don't they put more cache and Registers ?
Why is the increment always gradual?
saketh chilukuri it costs lots of money to implement L Cache memory, also it is difficult to implement them accordingly such that all cores get proper access through it, Apple chips does so bcoz of using less cores(2 high performance cores) and using more transistors in their chip(which too costs alot more)...Qualcomm always focus on being balanced rather than giving just more raw performance.
The answer is money. Phones with top Snapdragon chips start from half the price of iphone so each component of the phone needs to be cheaper.
You mean Qualcomm focuses on being cheaper, and more impressive on the advertisement than making better chips?
Chen G upgrading things that matters. GPU, DSP, Image processor (who else can encode 4k 60p together with HDR) and moderately CPU). Iphone has three times single core CPU performance compared to 835 but do you see any situation where iphone performs three times better than phone with a11?

9:05 Cortex M3 thats a Samsung custum core, how does it associate itself in a Qualcomm SoC?

Great vid Gary!!
Gary very good explanation i liked your video you are the best
Good to know the details about Snapdragon 845.
Absolutely awesome review Gary absolutely curious myself to see how this will all works out.Always enjoy watching Thanks for sharing Deb ✌👌👍
Thank you so much Gary, for such clear explanation, you got me very attentive to listening god bless you and keep up the good work
I’m in love with your accent, so classy
The best explanation ever is that it's a new SoC :)

Regarding the slow-mo, how come Sony can do 900+ FPS with SD835?
Shamil Avgani Sony built it's own dedicated image proccessor specifically for that.
But only last for about 5secs
Rin X cuz of storage limitations, 900fps for 5sec is a lot.
They implemented specialized extremely fast memory just behind the imaging sensor.

very informative video sir !
Please explain the Microsoft/ Qualcomm collaboration
Best series from AA
Love you gary
Sadly Qualcomm chip design is all working on the server chips.. Else snapdragon 845 would have way faster custom cpu's...
Gary's the best on this channel hands down
LOVE this videos 😍😍
I loved these channel it gives me a lot about tech

Gary explains videos are more popular than flagship reviews

nonsense
What nonsense?
Can you please do a video about truly wireless earphones? And also a little bit information about Apple W1 cheap?
SD845 might endup in new gen Hololens in 2019. Currently Hololens is just running with Intel Atom.
I think the exynos was held back by the 835 on some specs and the same goes for Quick change. And then with Qualcomm specific soc features Samsung has to develop similar features for exynos. Maybe that's why Samsung has been working on snapdragon socs lately.

I'm thinking about getting the Oneplus 5T, but I'm going to wait for Oneplus 6/6T with this chip.
Next year Qualcomm announce SD855..you wait for OnePlus 7/7T?
TheZaman1983 Nah. Unless I finally find a job
I love everything you do :)
Gary is the only member of AA that i like.
Please do one video focusing more on the *DSP* 🔬
Gary, would you please advise us on your personal opinion. Which SoC you think is better - Snapdragon 845 or Kirin 970?
Snapdragon is always better, becouse Kirin ignores gpu performance and it's 2 generations behind.
But GPU was still 2 generations behind, worse than in Snap 820.
Peace brother in arms. Snapdragon still better than Kirin. Kirin not a slouch of course with the 970.
Paperclown I am wondering how do you even know how young I am and what I am going to do... Geez... I am asking Gary because of his knowledge. I am curious to understand his personal opinion. However, SD845 does not impress me anyhow. The 820 and 835 were interesting topics to me, but this one is not.
Tomasz Bud Kirin NPU helps a lot tho
Gray you are the best to explain
Gary, does the X20 modem finally support the new 600MHz band 71 that T-Mobile is working on implementing?
Great explanation
Looking forward to testing compare with 835 and a11
Thanks gary. U are like my physic teacher😎
I want a ChromeOS device with this SoC. The performance would be amazing
How do u get snap drgon on your LG android phone. It appeared out of no where 2 days ago on my phone. I think ive been hacked through a router or laptop in my home?
Can you do a video explaining how Windows is being powered by an ARM-based processor? I thought windows was made to run on CISC architecture?
Just go to Windows related channel. You can find the info there.
Great video!

Well explained..!
So will all snapdragon 845 phones be quick charge 4.0 capabil or will each manufacturer have to do something extra for 4.0?
Hi Gary. How is that LG velvet has 48MP camera while 845 can only do 32MP?
If its a System On a Chip (SOC), why does the SD835 in a Pixel 2 support LTE band 13 but the SD835 in the One Plus 5T does not?
Thanks
