    Literally every time we've been to one of our beaches that you're permitted to drive on in Oregon and Washington, especially Long Beach, we've had at least one vehicle that we ended up recovering . . . no exaggerating with Long Beach (every single time)
    One of the keys to not getting stuck in the first place I think is also knowing your own vehicle. How it handles, what is capabilities are, etc. and how to properly and effectively use the recovery gear you have.

    • @OverlandPNW
      @OverlandPNW  2 года назад

      And half of them seem to get stuck right at the access road on/off the beach, blocking everyone else from coming/going. Mostly people in cars stuck within 20 feet of where the pavement ends. I think Cape Kiwanda is the best beach in Oregon to drive, or at least the most scenic. There are a lot of handgliders there launching from the top though.

    In my younger days my '99 pathfinder got sucked into the ocean! I was chest deep in the water holding onto my floating, still running rig as the recovery vehicle showed up. We used all of his straps hooked onto his winch and got her back to shore. I'm so amazed we got out of that situation with nothing but a blown TPS sensor. It literally took about 5 seconds for us to get into trouble. The beach is nothing to be messed with lightly 😬

      Great story and so true that the beach is not to be messed with lightly! In my younger days, I was a passenger in an old Land Rover that was rolled by the current during an attempted river crossing. It went about 100 yds downriver with us holding onto it before it ran aground. I was in high school at the time but still have picture of it. But I completely agree, water is to be respected!

    Initially looks crazy but sound, sober advice. It would have been a good opportunity to highlight A-TRAC vs MTS. Other cautions include avoiding the soft sand to the sides of most beach entry points, care when crossing mountain streams draining across the beach & to checking for seasonal closures which are pretty common in Oregon.
    Soft shackles, particularly long ones are good for some flexibility in recovering stock vehicles. I've even wondered about carrying J-hooks or other frame/body hooks to extract tourists cars. Curious why you didn't just pretension the line right there - it would have been easy to hook up to Steve's rear and pull yourself forward to tension.
    Really loving all this regional content!

I have stock Bridgestone Dueler H/T tires. Does the tread pattern matter on soft sand or is the size of the footprint important which is increased by airing down?

    • @OverlandPNW
      @OverlandPNW  2 года назад

      Yes, the tread pattern makes a big difference in sand. Having said that, most people are not going to buy a set of tires with a sand specialization in mind. We all just show up at the beach or dunes with whatever tires we have. So, airing down is very important. Here's a link to a list of some good sand tires: www.tiredeets.com/best-tires-for-sand/ . Another great video. I know that beach well. One of my favorites. One additional reminder for beaches - which you covered when you said where to drive - best not to drive where there have been a lot of people hanging out at the beach. People walking on the beach tends to break up the sand making it soft. I know this from experience on that very beach. Fortunately I had my traction boards and CRAWL. Some great tips here. I would welcome a video on those soft shackles. How you like them and how you use them.

    Question: could i drive in the sand with 4L with the A-TRAC on? I've only driven it in 4H in sand

    • @OverlandPNW
      @OverlandPNW  2 года назад +1

      Sand surfaces can be very different and they change in real time as you drive over the sand. In general, most people use 4L for driving in sand, especially for driving in soft sand because the on-demand torque can be very useful. Use 4H for driving at higher speeds (for example, 25 mph) on very hard-packed or very compact sand. 4L with MTS (Mud & Sand setting) is the best choice for sand. Yes, you can use 4L with A-TRAC on sand but MTS is a better choice (if you have it). A-TRAC does not allow as much slippage as MTS and so in that bottomless, sugary kind of sand you may end up digging in. So, there is a learning curve and it all depends on the sand type, your speed, flat or uphill sand terrain, etc. Also, remember that A-TRAC only kicks in at very low speeds. If you do not have a lot of sand driving experience, stick to hard-packed sand and make sure to have a shovel, traction boards, a kinetic rope, drive with a second vehicle, and have other appropriate recovery equipment for sand. Also, be aware of tides. You may already know all this but I mention it for others that may read this as well. Cheers!

    • @bearburrell6104
      @bearburrell6104 2 года назад

      @@OverlandPNW Great info thanks! Yes, the A-Trac at least for my year is 5mph or less. one advantage I see w/ 4H in a manual is that the traction control stays on so if the wheel(s) starts to spin it helps prevent that where is traction control is off in 4L. I will try 4L next time and see how the the A-Trac works in 4L under 5mph

    • @OverlandPNW

      I have actually never used chains with the 4Runner. I run snow-rated KO2s and they have done a great job on all manner of snow trails. I have used traction boards as needed. It is a good topic though. A set of chains would definitely be a good add to recovery/safety gear especially if you are on step ice packed trails in the backcountry. The last time I used chains must be almost 20 years ago. So, I probably do not have the expertise for a video on that topic.

    • @runnerxa
      @runnerxa 2 года назад +1

      Typically you don't put chains on the front because of steering and loss of braking (on icy surface, not snow). However in heavy snow (or mud), you can have chains on all 4 tires. That said, I had chains on my 4Runner, GX, and LX before. It will be tight in the front if you have oversized tires and no lift. Likely to rub in the wheel well, front mud flap, and UCA at full lock. You may have to look at aftermarket wheels with less offset (or wheel spacers) to clear the stock UCA. Rear have no issues even with oversized tires.

    • @sheerwillsurvival2064
      @sheerwillsurvival2064 2 года назад

      @@runnerxa google info about the 4Runner. I’ve used chains a lot in my younger days always used on all 4 never had a problem it actually helped steering but that was back in the 70-80s they had little extra claws on chains that helped in ice I noticed my new chains don’t have claws and are hard to find

    • @TheKPDX
      @TheKPDX 2 года назад

      No reason you can't run front chains except that clearance is often an issue. Chains are not typically used on-road due to concerns regarding steering and braking - that said, you put them on the front of front wheel drive cars...
