    I'm 79 years old.
And in all my life this remains the most beautiful I've ever heard...

The lyrics are sexual, but very cute and subtle.
A the fountain where I was walking, I found the water so beautiful that I bathed in it, my friend got mad at me for a rose that I refused to give (she doesn't understand why this kid is so mad, and she's upset because she thought they were friends).
This is a super summary of the song.
A girl refuses sex to a young man, she keeps her virginity and she's confused to why her friend is so mad at her.
But in the end, she kept her flower.

Perfect song to go with the scene after the doctor's death, beginning with his wife's numb expression as his lifeless body is covered with sand until it's out of sight, with the camera zooming out and above to show he's just another one of the many fresh graves that day, and the next scenes were of how all the relevant characters were moving on...the nun in her eternal wisdom understanding what lesser mortals can't, the innocent children graduating, the assistant continuing the doctor's work, the cleaner symbolically clearing away all the stuff that represented his existence... everyone was turning the page to the next chapter except Kitty, it seems, until the catalyst that broke the dam of her grief she's kept in check... And then it was her turn to say goodbye. Beautiful transitional and end scenes.

The movie actually for once was more beautiful that Somerset Maugham's book. Beautiful film.

À la claire fontaine m'en allant promener
    J'ai trouvé l'eau si belle
    Que je m'y suis baigné
    Il y a longtemps que je t'aime
    Jamais je ne t'oublierai
    Sous les feuilles de chêne
    Je me suis fait sécher
    Sur la plus haute branche
    Le rossignol chantait
    Il y a longtemps que je t'aime
    Jamais je ne t'oublierai
    Chante, rossignol, chante

I saw this movie when I was on the 7th grade. Now, more than 12 years later I wish I could go back to that time.

You're still young, you'll be regretting these days in 12 years, just live.

I believe the 2nd part of your post is incorrect. I believe this is the version sung by Les Petits Minous. I have the iTunes download. I have been unable to locate the version by the Choir and would love to find it. The Choir's version is also not on the soundtrack.

I hope John Curran did'nt understand that the «rose» in the song is in fact a girl's virginity and that this song is about someone who does'nt want to have sex with someone else and ends up not being frends with them anymore and being sad about it.

Well, if you've seen the movie, it makes sense. She had an affair with someone and then fell in love with her husband (married for convenience) who then died. She wishes she could have given her roses (virginity/love) to her husband but he is now gone, just likening the song.

This is old but if anyone else stumbles upon this, that is NOT what the song is about. It's about lost love (although virginity is involved).
The young woman is bathing in a fountain and thinking of an old lover that is gone, who she never gave her "rosebud" to. She sings about how she misses him, wishes he was still with her, and regrets him not being the one to take her "rosebud".
So yes, a theme about virginity is still in there, but the song is more about lost love and regret.
