We recently said good-bye to our loyal Queen Shiba Inu Roxy after 17 years! She was a wonderful fun loving active member of our family! Yes, very intelligent & a bit head-strong. Yes, do socialize & train them in the first year, but she continued learning all her life. She loved soft bedding, squeaky toys, real chicken, rabbit or lamb! She loved to play with all sizes of dogs, loved babies & children & would present herself to be petted by everyone _ so that she could then continue with her walk/ run!
I love shibas. Unfortunately,I live in an apartment and it wouldn't be fair to the dog not to have a fenced in yard. But,i can watch your handsome little fella on youtube. I want to get a dog very soon and I'm doung a lot of research before i decide on the best fit for me. Ill adopt from a local shelter. Thank you for sharing your beautiful shiba, Jimmy❤
It’s not preferable, but I have a Shiba Inu and I’m currently in an apartment. I moved for graduate school. However, previously I lived in an apartment with an accessible fenced in dog park. Now, I just take my Shiba on two 1hour walks and one 30 minute walk every day. On the weekends I take longer walks if I can!
apartment is fine - lots of walks especially first two years, to build the concept of the apartment is the "den" where the tired dog rests. A yard actually can contribute to lazy owner not stimulating the dog enough - "s/he's in the yard, that's good enough" when really, the yard is too boring. Lots of walks.
We rescued our shiba in March and he is 3, we also live in an apartment with another much bigger dog. We walk 3-4 times a day and just encourage play time when he shows interest in it (the stubbornness means he only plays on his terms 😂). He is actually more attached to our other dog, than she is to him-but it took time to get there. I think with enough walks and dedication to play time they are actually great apartment dogs. Good luck on searching shelters, I hope you find the best companion ❤️
Although the things you explained are spot-on, you (and most all-about-Shiba-Inu videos) failed to address a VERY important factor about this breed - that they can EASILY become AGGRESSIVE if you don't exercise and train them properly. These dogs don't nip you - they bite. Hard. Hard enough to draw blood. They mean business when they bite. The native Japanese Spitz breeds are VERY DOMINANT and need a good pack leader to keep them stable. These dogs were not bred to follow commands. They were bred to do as their instincts tell them. I like to describe them as "trainable wolves". Here in Japan, Shiba Inus are like the Pitbulls of USA. They cause the most serious biting incidents, the most given up by owners, and the most to be euthanised. In every dog shelter and rescue organisation you see lots of Shiba Inus. They are NOT for everyone, especially people who have not done enough research on dog psychology and proper training.
I assume RUclips thinks you want to watch and you click on my video because you are still curious to see other people's Shiba Inu. Anyways, thanks for stopping by👍
Same....I can see why they are so popular with yt , and the internet....u know people didn't pay any attention to them yrs ago it seems like, or is that me ?
@@chaosdweller I think many years ago shiba inus are not as popular and there was no such thing as shibe. They got more popular once they got more accessible (more breeders around the world). Do you have a shiba?
@@jenniferking2243 Definitely! I've been in love with the breed long before I got my pup and I can't imagine my life without one. We also have a 13 yr old Jack Russell and 7 yr old rescue.
I got my Shiba Inu from a pound in Korea. Unfortunately she wasn’t properly socialized when we got her, and she was already a year old. She is surprisingly obedient to the family, but she still chases and barks at other dogs (especially big dogs; she is really scared of them), and is scared of most other humans... But my family loves her very much, and give her plenty of love every day!
Great video, shiba's are the best. I have a 8 month old and she's so funny. While they are fiercely independent it's my experience that if you spend the time to train them from early on and you have a lot of patience, they are just as trainable as other dogs.
My shiba Inu came from a Amish family that left it outside in a cage with his siblings and mom for most of its 8 week life. He didn’t know how to react to the toys we got him, but after patience and lots of playtime outside. He is the best decision I have ever made.
I used to own an Akita (Akita Inu) and the Shiba seems like a smaller version of the Akita! Same temperament, intellect and stubbornness in a smaller package.
Jimmy is so well adjusted to other pups, my 10 yr old female sesame tolerates other pups, but never play, maybe it’s the age. And I mentioned in one of your other videos how my tri-color loves the water trick that you also do, she also plays dead in the same way !!! Your videos are so great, y’all stay safe and healthy !!!
Yes! I can’t stress enough how important SOCIALIZATION is! It only gets harder to do this as time goes by, so start ASAP! Something to really focus on as an owner if you want to be able to take your shiba around with you!
Ha ha ha. I adopted one eight years old with no socialization or training. He became a fine pet - after four years of intense effort. I've worked with dogs for 55 years and he was one of the most challenging!
I was lucky that my Shiba I adopted from the humane society was such a good boy in everything he did. What did not help was my parents doing things to either undermine his progress, teach him bad behaviors, or effect his health negatively. I honestly hope that after all the detrimental things they did that they won’t euthanize him Behind my back during the last few years I have with him... assuming he lives long enough to see 15.
I've only had my Shiba inu for eight months now, but eye contact is definitely big with him. He's very smart and only follows my commands if I have a treat *sigh*. He definitely is unlike any other dog I've encountered and I'd recommend anyone who adopts/purchases one to research the breed thoroughly. He's my dream dog so I can't believe I get to come home to him everyday. Something else I personally believe that could be covered in this video or next would be Body Language. Tail up, Tail down, Ears down, and Ears cocked to the side (I'm sure there is more tells). Assessing your dog's body language and determining your Shiba's mood might be paramount in a situation they might have not encountered before. As my Shiba is quiet and doesn't growl/bark at other dogs or humans, I've had to learn his body language to get him out of a situation that he might not be comfortable with. I believe this topic would be useful for all Shiba inu owners at any age of their dog.
Thanks for the comment. Body language is absolutely important and it takes time and experiences to learn those nuances. Shiba inus are too smart and they just like to "choose" when they want to listen to your command. They are still absolutely adorable though❤
My Shiba-Girl Mochi is 6 month old. She was so relaxed, easy to train and quiet as Baby. Now she is s teen and I have to agree she is VERY hard to train, ignore most commands now and is yelling whenever she dislikes something or would like to grab something. I would say the Shiba-Breed is most like a Child or Cat. Every day is hard now but it's worth it. I love her so much, she is always on my side and love to sleep next to me. It's my little b*tchy baby xD
you share the most important information to make pet happy and successful pet owner.. I know it is a responsibility I could not keep up.. so I will be online pet owner..
dunno if she is "shy"? (like, is it a defect that needs to be corrected?) - the husky-type breeds tend to be private/reserved and oriented mostly to their close family. I have never forced my shiba to accept pats from strangers. Instead I educated the people on the breed, and once they know how dignified the breed is, they are pleased to have my shiba honour them with a quick hand-sniff. :)
@Pretty Boy well, I say they are generally a dignified and reserved type of dog, and I always felt that it was better to have that respected and honoured, ie just keep strangers hands off my dog. Not shy or flinching or scared, just like "Hey. Don't touch. Thank you." When they are about 6months old they often do try out dog-aggression/chasing off dogs that get close, and you have to correct that, make sure 6-month old shiba knows you are boss, you make the decision, you evaluate the other dogs. Shiba needs to pay attention to YOU, not the dog, and respect your opinion about other dogs being close by. If you are getting a dog that is older than that, their behaviour to other dogs may be already determined, and if they are set on aggression that is harder but not impossible to push back.
Jennifer King in Japan the Shiba is very a healthy breed and expects 16 to 20 years of life. Tonka (my Shiba) is very healthly, and still looks great, very active and no heath issues. I expect him in that range 16 to 20 years...
Thank you so much for the Video. One of the best i ever saw about Shiba Inu. I’m planing to get one my own but i want to prepare, that i have enough time for him. I have one question please. Does the puppy, like 9 Weeks old, does sleep the hole night, or do have to go out every few hours? Thank you and please make more Videos about your beautiful Jimmy 😍❤️❤️❤️
Hi Anthony, thanks for the comment and welcome to the channel😆👍 When jimmy was much younger (week 8-10) we monitor his water intake closely and remove water 2 hours before sleep. Usually we remove water at around 8 pm and will take him for his last walk 9-9:30pm. He did, however, for a few nights make noise so we need to take him out during the night. It will get better as they age, the first few weeks are not easy. Enjoy the ride and good luck👍
So much like the Husky character. It really does feel like you’re living with a four-legged person the way they’re such independent thinkers. Not for control freaks or people who don’t have a sense of humour.
Nice video (I would just add a comment about dog park, making sure the other dogs are well socialized too so they don't traumatize your puppy ;) ). Had multiple dogs in my life (also as volunteer and foster in a rescue centre) but first time shiba inu human companion since a year I can definitely agree to this video. Socialize, bond, train, exercise (mental and physical) and work on medical cooperation training (grooming, bath, medication, ...) and do these often and gradually. My 13th month old shiba was the most challenging dog/puppy I encountered, super mega smart, and initially she needed to make her opinion if what you asked her was in her interest or not. Now she's the most cooperative (and not obedient, obedience is such an inappropriate word with dogs, especially with shibas) dog i ever had in my life, best recall ever for tons of running free with focus and attention, very comfortable anywhere with almost anyone (dog, cat, horse and human) and loves crazily her vet. The first few months were tough for me but so worth spending the time and effort (and nerves :D ) every single day !
Thanks so much for sharing. Dog park is really tricky and definitely need to keep a close eye all the time, we had instances where Jimmy almost got attack but I usually is able to stop it before anything happen. Like you mentioned first few months, I would say the first whole year is the most challenging but critical time to develop bond and trust with your puppy and if you put in time and effort it definitely pays off. ❤
A Shiba (3yo boy) was introduced to me as a first dog because my boyfriend has one. Luckily he trained the Shiba well and him and I are both incredibly stubborn ourselves. I learned everything there is to know, I was used to training cats (stubborn too) and the mothers in my family are all quite the matriarchal Italian mothers. So luckily I can use that to my advantage with training a Shiba because I never get tired and luckily my boyfriend is even more stubborn so I don't overwhelm him. I never get tired training the Shiba. The Shiba is used to know that if I call for something, I do it only twice as clear as I can and if he doesn't react: I WILL come to HIM and make it happen. And if he does do what I want I praise him very much and he gets a chance to earn his favorite treats. And sterilising him helped so incredibly much. Since he got sterilised he finally made new friends!
Feel like so many people are getting a Shiba because of the memes without fully understanding that it's one of the harder breeds to live with if you're not prepared to invest A LOT of time.
I can see a common problem with kennel clubs.. yesterday i watched the breed standard in the swedish kennel club..they said this breed don't require hardly no exercise..just a nice couch and a small garden..but it's a hunting dog..all healthy dog breeds need good exercise. And it's a shame these international kennel clubs destroying breed after breed. My self i own 2 catahoulas and a dogo argentino. Take care
well done video, great presentation of the information, I possibly would have only added one thing that would be the hazards of off leash and the necessary of a good Bond - relationship an extensive training to do so. Came over from Reddit, greetings from the green dragon shibas pack🐾🐲🦊❤
Thank you so much and definitely letting Shiba inu off leash is almost impossible and I will certainly take your recommendations as my future Shiba Inu training videos inspiration. Thanks again for stopping by👍
@@SuperShiba very welcome Oh, I thought it was a good introduction to the shibas although off leash certainly isn't impossible four of ours are off leash trained I'm in the process of training a 9-week old pup to be as good off leash as my Mya Ki is, I hardly ever put a leash on her.
I was lucky enough to have alot of time to spend with my Shiba puppy the first year. The most intelligent dog I've ever encountered. Very endearing. very full of energy. Very deadly to any animal its own size or smaller. Can be very destructive if you don't give them enough stimulation and interaction. Does not come when off leash when outdoors despite training in youth!
Nice video! The only thing I would say is to not comb your shiba regularly as this worsens the shedding over time. It's better to pluck or blow out the hairs.
I love shiba inu however I can't buy yet it's quite expensive here in the Philippines. That's why this time, I invest shiba inu coins. hahaaha I can buy shiba inu very soon when shib coins pump up to 10x
Thing is that I live in an apartment. However, there are long side walks and a dog park and nearby trails. However, I'm concerned about noise and quiet so I feel like I can't get one until I buy a house. On the other hand, I hear and see Japanese RUclipsrs have them in an apartment and people have even bigger dogs here. I'm also afraid of it terrorizing my remaining cat. Never had a dog, never wanted one - except for a Shiba Inu is finally making me seriously consider all the work. I've had two cats pass away in the past year and one of them was seriously Shiba like it seems like, basically a disrespectful huge cat bigger than small dogs who seemed to think it was a dog. Chewed through dog toys and had incredible athleticism 😂
i've owned a lot of dogs and it is weird when eye contact/recall is not part of a training class... like, really weird. i would probably talk to the trainer about it or leave that class and find a different one.
I have my dog named kianna,he is a haft shiba since her father is a shiba inu breed.A lot of my friends really love my dog and they wanted to have a puppy too from my dog, kianna is so kind, humble, sweet, easy to train. She's a quite dog,she didn't barked that much excpet if she saw unfamilliar person.
my sheba inu Yoshi is the best best companion i have ever had ... she was easy to train & so was i . she now is 13 yrs old and still acts like a silly puppy .love love me little red!!
Very good! The video covered everything I thought I knew before about Shiba, but also added to my knowledge of the breed. This person obviously is a dedicated dog owner! Most importantly she reminded dog owners that more intelligent dog breeds are usually the most stubborn, and take longer to train and test the owner's dedication. Too many dog owners confuse a dog's resistance to training as a dog being "dumb" or "stupid". For instance, the Border Collie while intelligent is a breed that has a tremendous amount of energy and requires skilled and dedicated trainers. The breed wants to work and a Border is not the dog to leave in an apartment home for 8-10 hours a day!
Thank you! Each dog breed is unique so it is important to understand the breed before you buy to ensure your lifestyle can provide/support what your dog's need.
I Have three shibas. They are all so different but very similar too in the sense that they are easy to train but stubborn and mine don’t like other dogs.
I have a Jack Russell right now and when it comes to temperament they are the same as a Shiba. They are stubborn but super smart and won't want to learn anything unless it's a game or helps them out. Luckily they learn things very quickly and we were able to train my dog but he's still a pain in the ass.
Neat name lol,...just for the record I did warn u sapiens..., on preventing mass chaos, but yet time and time again, u ignored me,...and now look around, do it.
My parents got a shiba puppy (Lacey, cause she used to eat the laces out of everyones shoes🤣) when I moved out and that stubborn little ball of sass just passed a month ago😭 but I adored her so I'm adopting a 4 yr old shiba boy tomo and I've been prepping like the dickens, this video was spot on and your Jimmy is adorable!! Thank you for the video!!
The walk should be done different, next to you or behind you. Now your shiba is leading you, you should be the leader. Also, i do not recommend a harness like that, a collar is better. But even better, a slip lead. Do not let them pie every 5 seconds, a rigorous walk is the best walk, and then a little play time, sniffing and more freedom. Walking like this will establish a better leadership. Good luck. Great job on the eye contact! I think you are a very very good owner! Great job.
Eden Garden if you put a regular collar on them, they slip right out. They require a harness like the one in the video because the head is smaller than the neck.....with a lot of fluff too!
Thanks for the video, I’m planning on getting a shiba this year. This video was informational.and helpful. In the past I was able to tame a few stubborn cats and teach them commands and walking on a leash. If I can do that, I think I’m on a good start with teaching a Shiba.
If a Shiba Inu doesn't follow your commands, don't worry. His/her level is simply too high for you, just earn a gym badge or two ;).
I'll just eat him.

my shibe Apollo just turned 3 last month and he's an absolute angel. This is easily the most realistic and informative video I've seen on raising these stubborn beauts. If you're a prospective shiba owner and you're dedicated to following these steps you'll be just fine!
Thank you @Theresa Miller and good luck on finding the right breed for your apartment.👍
@@miyakoakita2529 that's a great way for you and the shibe to get regular exercise!
That’s so interesting, thank you for this extra bit of information!
ok
@@KC-nm7mf is this really your tag name?
So like a small Akita?
I don’t know why I’m watching this I alreadydy have a shiba inu
I assume RUclips thinks you want to watch and you click on my video because you are still curious to see other people's Shiba Inu. Anyways, thanks for stopping by👍
That's why you are watching! It's called confirmation.

This doesn't scare me, this makes me want them even more! So smart and devious. Little joy!

@@chaosdweller I think many years ago shiba inus are not as popular and there was no such thing as shibe. They got more popular once they got more accessible (more breeders around the world). Do you have a shiba?
i have 3 shibas and ive never been happier LMAO they can be hard to manage sometimes but they’re the absolute best 🥺
Absolutely the best👍🏻
I've had my shiba for over 9 years and I definitely agree with these tips!
are you planning to get another shiba?

kinda? KINDA?! GO TO GOOGLE AND SEARCH SHIBA INU PUPPIES. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.
@@melindac.9222 Google Samoyed puppies. You will absolutely not be disappointed!
"most of the time they understand your command .. but choose to ignore you" hahaha truer words were never spoken.
Great video, shiba's are the best. I have a 8 month old and she's so funny. While they are fiercely independent it's my experience that if you spend the time to train them from early on and you have a lot of patience, they are just as trainable as other dogs.
Absolutely, consistency and patience are keys when it comes to training a Shiba Inu. Thanks for stopping by👍
when I first saw my shiba inu I could see myself in him that’s why I love him so much .
Proud owner of an adopted Shiba Inu. She was such a joy to have, unfortunately she passed away last year and I miss her dearly.
Really sorry for your loss, it’s never easy to see them go
Doll we rescued our brat. She rescued us lol. We rescued her at 8 mounts. You can't image how much we love her. I only wish I could get another dog
I'm a Shiba owner in the US, this is a great video!!
My shiba Inu came from a Amish family that left it outside in a cage with his siblings and mom for most of its 8 week life. He didn’t know how to react to the toys we got him, but after patience and lots of playtime outside. He is the best decision I have ever made.
Im really interested in getting one, that is why I’m gonna binge a lot of such videos.
Did u get one coz thats me rn but this video kinda scared me
@@naherhaile1890 nope😅
Not yet, gonna wait a few years until i have my own home
If previous lives are real, then I must've been a Shiba Inu in one of mine. Personality-wise it aligns perfectly.
Me too lol
I’m getting a Shiba puppy in a month and your videos has been helping a lot !!
Hi Ahmyaei, thanks for the comment and I am happy to learn that you find the information useful👍
Thank you for the video! :) Jimmy is adorable. I love watching your videos!
my heart melted when i realized his name was Jimmy. Hes so adorable ❤
Shiba inu’s in japan I follow are almost always living in an apartment.
I love my shiba/beagle mix. He looks like a Shiba but has floppy ears instead of pointy. Acts exactly as you expect a Shiba to though lol
I have one too!
I’ve got everything covered my family own a farm next door with two other dogs
We rescued ours from an abusive and couldn’t train him the way we want, but he’s so much better now
I was lucky that my Shiba I adopted from the humane society was such a good boy in everything he did.
What did not help was my parents doing things to either undermine his progress, teach him bad behaviors, or effect his health negatively.
I honestly hope that after all the detrimental things they did that they won’t euthanize him
Behind my back during the last few years I have with him... assuming he lives long enough to see 15.
What's your secret with training Mochi? does she have a favorite toy?
you share the most important information to make pet happy and successful pet owner.. I know it is a responsibility I could not keep up.. so I will be online pet owner..
Have a six month old shiba love to death, she’s a bit shy to strangers but she is warming up
They grow fast so treasure the time when they are young 👍🏻need to take lots of photos 📸
dunno if she is "shy"?
If you are getting a dog that is older than that, their behaviour to other dogs may be already determined, and if they are set on aggression that is harder but not impossible to push back.
yeah am getting one for SURE
My Shiba is turning 12 years old in September and he is a awesome Dog!!!!
What's the life expectancy of a shiba?
Jennifer King in Japan the Shiba is very a healthy breed and expects 16 to 20 years of life. Tonka (my Shiba) is very healthly, and still looks great, very active and no heath issues. I expect him in that range 16 to 20 years...
Like in seasons there are summer winter moonsoon autumn
Shiba dog is like a spring season to us🥰

Shiba: You have asserted your dominance and now I will follow your every order...sir.
Great video. I’ve had the joy of having 4 shibas, all lived to 16 or 17. I also breed 4 and they are all 16 now.
That's wonderful. Once you have one Shiba I feel it is hard to get a different breed. They are so unique and loyal if you treat them right.
This video is teaching me all I need to know so that I can raise my own pet shiba one day! Very useful tips! Thank you!!!
Does it come with the risk of going to the moon?
Thanks for the detailed comment . Sounds like you and boyfriend both know exactly how to deal with this very cute yet stubborn creature 👍🏻
Really want a Shiba when I'm older; maybe like 7 years. I have a cat right now and that I take care of
This dog made me 35k today
so true! i thought my chowchows were bad but my shiba is something else lol
Feel like so many people are getting a Shiba because of the memes without fully understanding that it's one of the harder breeds to live with if you're not prepared to invest A LOT of time.
Very true.
@• your a disgrace mate
I actually want a Shiba Ive had dogs before
I can see a common problem with kennel clubs.. yesterday i watched the breed standard in the swedish kennel club..they said this breed don't require hardly no exercise..just a nice couch and a small garden..but it's a hunting dog..all healthy dog breeds need good exercise.
Does not come when off leash when outdoors despite training in youth!
hehehe I don’t own a single Shiba Inu but doggo too cute
Your name lol!
i was looking for something else but this is better

Nice video! The only thing I would say is to not comb your shiba regularly as this worsens the shedding over time. It's better to pluck or blow out the hairs.
He is a good looking fellow. So I think he is a terrier type dog and yes, need plenty of space and opportunity to exercise!
Stellar video!
I love shiba inu however I can't buy yet it's quite expensive here in the Philippines. That's why this time, I invest shiba inu coins. hahaaha
I can buy shiba inu very soon when shib coins pump up to 10x

I loved this video and boy you are right on about everything, we have had our Shiba Inu for about 5 years now and she is my greatest joy
Where are all of my Crypto Currency lovers @ ❤️ Shiba Inu to the moon 🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀🐕🌝
Chewed through dog toys and had incredible athleticism 😂
i've owned a lot of dogs and it is weird when eye contact/recall is not part of a training class... like, really weird. i would probably talk to the trainer about it or leave that class and find a different one.
yeah agree. maybe the trainers arent used to breeds that dont like to make eye contact

Not just the us the uk 🇬🇧 too but I’m scared that it might be too cold but yet again it’s got fur 🤷🏽♂️
Another reason to get a Shiba Inu: DOGE
I searched" iwant to a millionaire should i buy shiba inu?"
Lol same
I Have three shibas.
Lol!
Your Shiba is gorgeous. 💙
Great information
Great video!!!
The stubbornness and sitting down as an act of defiance is akin to my Shih-Tzu. They both do the exact same thing.
Neat name lol,...just for the record I did warn u sapiens..., on preventing mass chaos, but yet time and time again, u ignored me,...and now look around, do it.
I really want a shiba inu but I think I am not ready for a dog yet. If I will get a dog I just want to make sure that it lives its best life!
Good advice! Thank you 😊
My parents got a shiba puppy (Lacey, cause she used to eat the laces out of everyones shoes🤣) when I moved out and that stubborn little ball of sass just passed a month ago😭 but I adored her so I'm adopting a 4 yr old shiba boy tomo and I've been prepping like the dickens, this video was spot on and your Jimmy is adorable!! Thank you for the video!!
Thanks for sharing. Shiba Inus are little monsters cover under their cute little face. But once you get it you are going to love him no matter what❤️
Thanks for sharing interesting information. Love it.
Thank you for a very informative video about the Shiba!
