I have a 100 lb quartz and epidote in my garden, that I collected on the same trip. As I am typing this, I am thinking that I should acid test it to make sure it is really quartz. That would be something else to etch if it turns out it is calcite.

I was really surprised how well the sandpaper worked. I thought the rock might try to ride under it, but that never even happened once. I will play with sandpaper more with that machine.

I used to go to PA at this time of year to hunt state land with my bow. I have fond memories of those trips. Daisy doesn't need coffee. I think I am going to start eating dog kibble to see if I can get the same energy from a cup of her food. LOL

I love what you do. For what it's worth, here's my free input- you get what you pay for. Seems as though most of the silicon carbide granules would settle at the bottom of the felt. They are also very hard, so for them to be more effective, shouldn't the pad also be hard? Just a thought. Thanks for sharing
For sure many got thru the pad as the vibrating continued. I actually really liked the sandpaper and will try to cut some full sheets and see how they work. I looked around online and nobody else is doing this, so there must be a reason, but I cannot think of what it is. Except, most people probably have a trim saw and don't have the wheel marks to contend with. Thanks for your feedback.

I like the vib flat lap for polishing. I am finding that it is not the right tool for removing the saw blade marks, as it takes forever. It would actually be more effective to use sandpaper by hand or better yet a flat lap (wheel). Another toy I need to acquire. :-)
Hi.Greig got your samples.I put the sawdust intyo muriatic for 24 hrs all I got left is alot of grey sludge.I roasted it back to a powder.Hope it does melt out any silver.I found some visible gold while roasting.keep you informed.Luck Mark.

I am going nuts trying to find the right rock to cut. In the end, I want a couple of 3.5" cubes. Because my tile saw blade is 7", that will be a max cut and anything larger will get stuck in the saw. I have plenty of smaller rocks or funny shaped rocks, but nothing yet that I can cut a good cube. I will look over my stash of rocks again today to see if I can find something that will work. Once again, I am handcuffed with a small saw.
I like the way you think. I recently bought a small flat lap and will set it up this winter to try to make some jewelry. It might make me pay more attention in the future.
I usually take the rock I'm cutting and hold it up against the side of the blade after I cut it and rotate it different directions while leaveing the flat sutface on the blade until it's super flat and the saw blade marks are out.
And we love our dog. Part of the family. In fact, i went away last weekend and my wife said "I missed Daisy". I guess me, not so much. Oh well. Daisy and I had a wonderful time. ;-)

For sure, it would be helpful if they provided some feedback as to what bothered them so much. In fact, I have learned from people who provided Constructive criticism. The epidote was from an old iron mine in Eastern Ontario. Right now, it is closed to collecting, so if I want more I might have to find another site.

I usually dilute 4:1 water:acid. The dropper was one that I had from gold prospecting. It was supposed to be used to suck up fine gold from a pan.
