  • New trailer for THE RAILWAY CHILDREN RETURN, arriving in UK cinemas on July 15th 2022.
Inspired by one of the most beloved British family films of all time, THE RAILWAY CHILDREN RETURN is an enchanting and heart-warming adventure for a new generation. Jenny Agutter resumes her role as Bobbie from the original film and is joined by Sheridan Smith (CILLA), Tom Courtenay (45 YEARS, BILLY LIAR) and John Bradley (GAME OF THRONES).
1944 - As life in Britain’s cities becomes increasingly perilous, three evacuee children - Lily (Beau Gadsdon), Pattie (Eden Hamilton) and Ted (Zac Cudby) Watts - are sent by their mother from Salford to the Yorkshire village of Oakworth.
There to meet them on the train station platform are Bobbie Waterbury (Jenny Agutter, reprising her iconic role in the original film), her daughter, Annie (Sheridan Smith), and grandson Thomas (Austin Haynes), and with their help the evacuees are soon settling into their new life in the countryside.
When the children discover injured American soldier Abe (KJ Aikens) hiding out in the railyard at Oakworth Station, they are thrust into a dangerous quest to assist their new friend who, like them, is a long way from home.

It's a sequel to a film based on a book written by a Fabian socialist and social critic. It's not a reimagining. It's an imagining of what Bobbie might have done later in her life. And it fits. You did notice that Edith Nesbit was inspired by the story of Dreyfus in France and compared the father's false conviction with the oppression by the tsar in Russia, right? And that she put in a whole chapter about Perks' birthday to warn how some people could find charity insulting? And a chapter about canal boats for another look at class? And the time Peter steals coals and the station master is surprised because he's from an upper-class family?

I saw the original on release, I was 10. Loved it dearly ever since and have been to Haworth and ridden on the K&WVR. A perfect film. So I approached the sequel with trepidation. In fact after reading the critics I decided I would wait for the TV premier but my grandson asked if he could go and I could hardly refuse. It was in fact far better than I feared, when i read "updated for todays sensitivities" I did shudder but in fact the story was very well done, the incidents were based on real events and carried a compelling message. In places it was quite hard hitting. Of course it wasnt as charming as the original, nothing could be but it worked and the photography is stunning - the Yorkshire tourist board (and the railway) must surely benefit from the publicity, it looked beautiful. Theres a few throwbacks that will please you if you are a fan of the original as well as some exposition about what happened after the first film. Agutter and Sheridan are superb as to be expected but so are the children and the supports - Tom Courtenay is great and the cheeky station keeper I didnt realise until the credits, is supposed to be Perks' (the late Bernard Cribbins) son. I was disappointed that red flannel petticoats did not make an appearance no doubt having gone out of fashion and Bobbie's famous line was not reprised - well not totally, I cant be sure as at that moment a piece of soot from the loco must have got in my eyes as it started watering for some reason. If you loved the original and think it could never be bettered than you are right but this is a different take and I think it worked very well.

The main theme of the film was fine, but it should have been a 15-minute segment, in the vein of the Hound in the first film. There just wasn't enough material there to stretch it out to a whole film. I spent the first half of the film waiting for it to start, and the next half waiting for it to end.
There are many problems with the film, such as trains not having toilets and the food fight in a time when there was strict rationing. They would have been short of food by the end of the week.
They showed a locomotive where you could clearly see the British Railways totem on the tender. A totem that didn't appear until 1956. They used CGI a lot in the early scenes. They could have CGI'd that out.
Some railway jobs were reserved occupations, but that would not have included porters at country stations. Perks would have been called up to serve in the armed services. They missed a trick by not having Perks' granddaughter as porter. I never noticed that he was supposed to be Perks grandson either. He seemed to be far too young to be his grandson. The film was set in 1944, only 39 years after the first film and Perks' children were all quite young.
Jenny Agutter was hardly in the film. I'd say her part would be best described as a cameo appearance. Sheridan Smith's part wasn't much bigger.
I can't see Booby associating herself with the violent bombing campaign of the Suffragettes. The Suffragettes only campaigned for the rights of women with property to have the vote. They opposed giving the vote to ordinary women. Bobby would have been far more likely to have been a member of the Suffragists, who campaigned peacefully for the right of EVERY woman to vote.
Father would have been too old to fight in WWI, so how would he have been killed in the war? His employment at the Foreign Office would have precluded him fighting on the front line anyway. He would know too many secrets. Maybe he was hit by a bomb dropped by a Zeppelin?
I couldn't see the point of Tom Courtney. Such a pity that they couldn't get Garry Warren to reprise his part.
I found that the part where the American Military Police arrested and imprisoned a British girl to be completely unbelievable. They would have absolutely no authority to do that. It would be as ludicrous as a British MP arresting an American civilian in the USA.
I couldn't understand the reason why all the children rushed out to stop the train?
I found the cinematography to be dull, as if it was made with a 1980s video camera.
There are things explained in the 1968 TV version of The Railway Children that aren't explain in the book or the 1970 film.
How could they afford such a big house when they are supposed to be poor? Because it was owned by one of their rich relatives who allowed them to use it.
Red flannel petticoats were out of fashion by 1905 too. Mother had an old-fashioned dress sense.

Usually I struggle to follow the plots of adult movies - I prefer kids’ movies (not mainly for that reason though). This one, however, I could follow. I’m a bit shabby on the details, but I liked the conflict/racism side of it (not meant in a racist way - I am against racism). I find ww2 quite interesting to learn about (and the Holocaust, as awful and upsetting as that is. (Again, not meant in an offensive way). I’d give this movie 3 1/2 stars out of 5.
