I would also say, there could be a multitude of reasons why iron may be low and there is not one cure. His point on oxalates/phytic acid is true. Others to add that are high in oxalates is dark chocolate. Also if you are supplementing Turmeric every day, that will lower iron status as well, in fact turmeric is given to people with overly high iron status. You could also be deficient in Copper. Copper is a major player and helps the absorption of iron. You could also be too high in Calcium, high calcium inhibits absorption of iron. So if your low in iron, I would say, obviously check your trace mineral status, but supplementing with copper (along with zinc, so to not deplete zinc, because copper depletes zinc, and also zinc is a major precursor for HCL-stomach acid production) supplement magnesium to counterbalance high calcium and balance with potassium. Lower intake of high oxalate foods. Eat organic red meat (high in heme- the highest absorbable version of iron). Supplementing with just iron may make your stomach hurt very bad, you would need to add allot of cofactors to help it assimilate and digest.
I've always been a huge ACV fan. My grandmother was born in 1885. She stressed the importance of ACV, and I'm happy I listened. Always enjoy your videos...MaryEllen
In another video Dr. Berg said kale has another type of iron or something similar. I would give priority to the list of foods he mentioned in this video. Good luck!
@@DFWDANCEBAND where did you hear kale was high in oxalates? Were you thinking of spinach maybe? If you’ve been skipping out on kale because of that then you can feel safe to eat it because it’s low in oxalates and was recommended as an alternative to other greens that are high. As far as the calcium content, the low amount of oxalic acid that is present in raw kale binds to the calcium greatly reducing it’s absorption in the body. So if you’re worried about too much calcium eat it raw not cooked. Because cooking destroys oxalates. You can also eat high iron foods at a different time in the day than ones with more calcium to help iron absorb better.
Great points. I had reflux for years due to NOT having enough acid in my stomach, but the Dr. put me on anti-acids and it made it way worse. I got off those years ago and changed my diet entirely- fixed the problem.

I take iron supplement with folic acid. You shouldn't take it with calcium (diary, fish ...), tea, coffee, chocolate. Basically it's what comes before anemia, first you have low ferritin, then when you lose even more iron, you became anemic. I have iron deficiency without anemia. I have cracks on lips after periods (Angular cheilitis), bruises under eyes, fatigue (I felt like I can faint when I was walking), sometimes restless leg syndrome, brain fog. Also you can have hard time to lose weight if you are iron deficient. I saw video where women was on keto diet and can't lose weight, doctor found iron deficiency without anemia. On iron supplement she lose weight, waist... Mostly females are at risk of iron deficiency because of heavy periods. Better to drink iron that contain something against constipation (badly absorbed iron leads to constipation). Some people prefer liquid iron. It's believed that iron supplements better absorbed if you skip the day, so one day iron supplement, one day off
THANK YOU!! Just some back story....I was told my hemoglobin and everything was normal for FIVE YEARS despite complaints of SEVERELY debilitating & heavy periods ALL MY LIFE but unbearable once I reached 26...from then I developed heart problems (palpitations & fast heart rate, told it was panic attacks at that I had anxiety and needed to stop coming to the ER just drink electrolytes when it happens or get psych meds. I took 2 antidepressants before I gave up smh...none of it helped!). I also gained weight steadily since puberty then when everything developed with my heart, I gained 60lbs in 4 months despite not changing a thing in my diet. I also had severely cracked & peeling bleeding lips & fingers, breathlessness, couldnt walk more than 10 minutes without needing to sit down or rest meaning I couldnt work off the weight I was gaining either!! I explained all this to doctors and they just shrugged it off and told me to lose weight and it will help! They didn't understand I was TRYING and none of it budged! A kind doctor I was with finally ordered me a full blood panel after I kept complaining of the same symptoms for a year with her (can onky see her 2 to 3 times a year because shes so booked up, so I dont blame her here)...but she tested my ferritin, CBC, & iron and TIBC and my iron saturation was an 8!!!! Its supposed to be a minimum of 15, but apparently people need to be at at least a 50 to feel normal though tests allow as low as 15 to be considered normal range! Everything else was right at the border of the lower limit for anemia. So one point lower and it would be classified as anemia but because it hadnt dipped low, I was always told it was "normal." Never had my iron saturation tested until now 5 years later, despite always asking and informing docs of my symptoms!! It's like doctors are almost offended if you ask for tests they dont order. But I was blessed enough to receive a kind doctor this time around, who finally believed me after I explained I have been struggling with this for 5 years, and I broke doen crying saying it's even gotten so bad I lost my job for going on 3 years now and dont get rehired because Im honest (so I cant be fired for withholding information if I need time off because I lost 3 jobs over the course of 2 years). Im thankful we caught everything before it got too low because low iron can cause heart attacks just like high iron as well. But thank you for the info you provided above. I have been taking my iron daily for about a month now (Vitron iron plus C) and it managed to jump 2 points. I expected more since it's such a high dose. I wonder if my periods are depleting my iron that much, or if something else is going on I should look into. Apparently gastro problems can delete iron, cancers, and internal bleeding. But I just recently had my first cycle in 2 years where I didnt vomit!! I was still nauseous and had bad cramps but not vomitting all day!!! That's a start!!! I didnt know about alternating though. I was plant based to try to counteract the weight gain and though I felt good when I wasnt on my cycle, I think it caused my iron to drop extremely low over time as I learned a lot of the foods I eat on the diet further block iron absorption as well and its harder for plant iron to be converted. I am pescatarian now and only eat salmon and sardines about 3 to 4 time a week. I didnt know about alternating iron! So I will try taking iron on days I dont eat meat and let my fish be my iron supplement for the days I dont take a tablet and see if that works better! Thank you again!!
OH! And once I added iron...about 2 to 3 weeks in, my weight actually drops when I exercise now (slowly but it's decreasing), my lips and fingers are almost healed, and when I dont exercise or eat normal calories, my weight stays the same!! Before it would still creep up even though I was in a deficit or in maintenance level!! I actually ate a little over maintenence for 2 days and my weight stayed the same! Before I could easily gain 2 to 3 pounds if I did that! And it would stick around so it wasnt water weight! I also was able to walk for an hour straight on a treadmill for the first time in YEARS!!! Usually I had to get off and rest at the 5 to 7 minute mark. So it's sad how much doctors underestimate the importance of iron!

@Graceful Rony Hello! Thank you for that question. Hope this video helps. When To Consume the Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Drink? ---> ruclips.net/video/dvx9lXwvm84/видео.html
I saw Dr. Berg's video on everyone being low on zinc and mega dosed it for a long time. I started feelign fatigued, anxious, hair loss, etc. Discovered my ferritin was low. All that zinc blocked copper and iron absorption. In fairness Dr. Berg does have a video on low copper but he also has one on copper toxicity. You need some copper to absorb iron.
Because oxalate forms insoluble salts with minerals, it can impair the intestinal absorption of essential nutrients such as magnesium, calcium, iron, and zinc, potentially leading to nutrient deficiencies 👉 www.drberg.com/blog/high-oxalate-foods?srsltid=AfmBOopUk_TIbtM7jd8qMrDsnBM0js2eQOtUi3ycIDzafrUnV6Bg17FZ

Those foods you listed have nonheme iron which is more difficult to absorb. Meats provide more heme iron which is more easily absorbed. That’s why he chose those foods because they have the most iron the body can actually use.
Dear Dr Berg, it is fantastic that you are teaching the world about good health through diet etc. which I share with family and friends. Today you mentioned your love of ‘octopus,’ which I also used to enjoy occasionally, however, after watching the documentary titled “My Octopus Teacher”, I find the prospect of consuming octopus abhorrent! Please watch the video….I believe it won an ‘Oscar’ as it is absolutely wonderful. Thank you for your work and especially your courage with your preventive approach to the minefield of so-called medicine today. Many Blessings.
I have endometriosis and severely deficient. SOB is a huge symptom for me along with extreme fatigue and poor concentration. I feel completely drained of energy and like a zombie
Can you do a video on how to lose weight when anaemic please doctor! It’s so difficult to lose weight because of course you have to be in a deficit but with no energy to workout it’s hard to lose weight.
Skylanderina 1 good iron supplements specially in liquid form helps take it on an empty stomach if possible, clams and dark chocolate are loaded with iron, 23 oz of those and you have the iron for a day recommend dosage.
beatriz aceiton uhh..so,2cups of dark hot chocolate a day? I can do that but i intake a lot of vegs everyday (new for 3wks now) and think too high in oxilates. I'm flush pale and show a big dark ring under eyes. Does that mean i need iron? Taken red meat and milk out of diet but eat eggs and cheese. Cook w/ olive oil...? Any idea
wow its crazy you mention crave chewing ice... I know someone dear to me that is anemic and chews ice everyday. I honestly thought it was because they like it lol but thanks to you I now the true reason. Thanks Doc your videos are amazing. Keep up the fantastic work!
Thank you. I am dying from Anemia. Passed out in 2017 & ended up in a hospital. Hemoglobin was around 4. Its sad because I take iron daily & nothing helps :( seafoood is gross. 🤢
Omg 😳 sane with me. Passed out at work doing a rescue job. Mine was a 4 too. Ended up getting 3 transfusions. Hope u r doing better now. Start drinking liquid chlorophyll
Dr. Berg Thank you for an interesting video!!! I can not tell you how much I have learned. I really love it when you, and Karen have the Q&A together!! Thank you for the video!
Dark chocolate for Iron? I had dark chocolate and its given me severe constipation. I'm seriously wondering if I have colon cancer. I already have multiple sclerosis. Ughhhhhhh. Life. Gotta keep going.
Dr. Berg, thank you. I'm enjoying two-meal-a-day intermittent fasting and kero. How do I know when I am ready for one meal a day? I am not very hungry for my second meal, but I don't think I can eat 7 cups of veggies in one meal.
Omg. I just started adding spirulina to my smoothies and I feel great! I always use oranges or orange juice. I notice hair breakage, hyperpigmentation, and hair breakage with low iron. Eating the ice, for me means NO iron.
Thank you so much Dr. Berg. You have helped me as well to reverse my pre-diabetes last year 2023-GOD BLESS YOU!!!-AMEN!. Warm regards, Brenda from Grand Cayman Islands💫❤🙏🏼
i was taking green tea and spinachs everyday after a while i was craving cornflakes and i wanted to chew hard food lol i was feeling tired i didnt know green tea low your iron !
I donate blood and they rejected me over this issue when i first started Keto and IF. I have been back since and had no problems doing the steps you have outlined in other videos.
Philip Mc Adam Philip, thanks for posting your comment. I tried to donate yesterday, but my number was too low and that is why I came checking for this topic. The nurse also said it could be my Vitamin D, as it helps absorption. Regardless, looks like the right track for fixing the issue.
I increased my consumption of Liver for the Iron Also when I would eat Spinach I would either lightly cook it or consume with cheese and lemon juice. On the blood donation I would have your normal meal an hour or so before hand. I do now and with my slice of liver for my protein. I have one eating window per day and was leaving my meal after I had donated blood which was not the smartest of ideas. Now I eat before I go. Have had no rejections since.
I post this video and someone wrote this can you address this if you have time 🙄..I just saw his video, eggs actually have an iron inhibitor called Phosvitin in the Yolk which is where the iron also resides. Phosvitin inhibits iron 26%. And, Spirulina doesn't really have that much iron when you put it into perspective, and it also has B12 analogue which h the body can't use and inhibits good B12 in the meantime. It's not good particularly if you're B12 Deficient. He missed, Polyphenols, Tannins, Phosvitin, Calcium and Caffeine as additional inhibitors.
Testimony: "In 2019, I was diagnosed with Essential Thrombocythemia. I was fine and checking my blood levels regularly. This year, in January, tests showed I had anemia. No medication then (they told me I should go to Gyne to sort my fibroids, as I was bleeding heavily for 3 out of 4 weeks). In Feb. I had a collapse and went to ER. STILL, no medication. After almost hitting someone at the medical practice, they sent me for blood tests again and ECG. Iron and hemog was so low (7), I have an arrhythmia, and the doctor did not tell me. He just prescribed iron tablets to be taken 2x/day. My hair was like air and my nails were worst than paper. I could not go upstairs to my room without almost fainting after 5 steps! I am drinking turmeric tea 2x and taking the tables and following the best docs on the internet. I have restarted exercising and jogging. I do not feel exhausted, but my skin and hair are still poor. The only meat I eat is liver (since 2018). B12 levels are good. All I wish is for doctors to look at my situation as a whole, instead of playing medics. Having ET means I can be having leucemia if anemia is not treated properly. They don't even think of that. I want to have fibroids removed to stop the bleeding, but they take so long with bookings. Honestly, my one and only reason for being patient and calm is my Faith. Until December, I was working in a malaria-prone country in Africa, and somehow, I lost my flight back, after coming home for Christmas. God kept me here and I trust that I am being looked after by Divine Forces. I will keep on praying for faster appointments and clear results." Question: CAN THIS 49 YR WOMAN TAKE ACV? Thank you.
Please my dear, STOP DRINKING TUMERIC TEA! The use of turmeric can interfere with the body's absorption of iron. Therefore, people with iron deficiency should use them with caution.
Research hawthorn berry tea - plus adding in lemongrass. It's a natural way to lower BP. Just type it into RUclips and some results should pop up, including a video from Dr Berg on it.
Found this; perhaps Dr. Berg can do a video if he hasn't already: "People use ashwagandha for other health conditions, including anemia. It is high in iron and has been shown to help increase hemoglobin levels..." My MCH is low, I'm starting to take organic "Ash..." to see if it helps.

Hi doctor and thank you so much for all your good information, I was "forced" to have an Iron IV last week because of my low low Iron level, I'm eating spinach, liver and all the good things but also maybe eating to much pasta and bread?? well this time I'm going to try cider vinegar and see how it works .. 👍🌷

I take a blood builder pill to go with my 4x 150mg polysaccharide iron complex. If I go lower than 4x, my blood work results drop drastically. So the GP is checking every 3 months. But the blood builder made a whole lot of difference. Nicole
Thank you Doctor. Please how much apple cider to use and when . Please answer.
@Graceful Rony
Hello! Thank you for that question. Hope this video helps.
When To Consume the Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Drink?
---> ruclips.net/video/dvx9lXwvm84/видео.html
Dr. Berg is the BEST. Thank you, Dr. Berg!!!!
Glad to be an inspiration.
Your information is the best, my apple cider vinegar has gotten rid of my acid reflex, plus it really keeps the appetite low, on the keto and fasting.
I am confused about oxalates - they block iron absorption? But spinach is high in oxalates?
Because oxalate forms insoluble salts with minerals, it can impair the intestinal absorption of essential nutrients such as magnesium, calcium, iron, and zinc, potentially leading to nutrient deficiencies 👉 www.drberg.com/blog/high-oxalate-foods?srsltid=AfmBOopUk_TIbtM7jd8qMrDsnBM0js2eQOtUi3ycIDzafrUnV6Bg17FZ
I was just told I was deficient and I do take my Apple cider vinegar every morning 😟 lol but I’m bad at eating my greens 😅😟
Thank you very much Doctor, i'm very happy to have you in our lives
My pleasure! Glad to help!
I always Thank you Dr. E. Berg for all you´re sharing herein swedish, Tack att Du finns!
Testimony. Pain in my stomach groin area and associated inflammation left at the word. Praise and glory to the Lord. I am grateful Jesus my Saviour and Lord.
You can find Iron in Beets, Spinach, Raisins and Molasses too Dr. Berg.
Leila McIlwraith lentils, chia seeds and cocoa, too.
Those foods you listed have nonheme iron which is more difficult to absorb. Meats provide more heme iron which is more easily absorbed. That’s why he chose those foods because they have the most iron the body can actually use.
Black strap Molasses
Molasse is hard to digest, make sure to dilute it!
@@mindsetwithmarie676 Plus loaded with sugar!!!
What about calcium affecting iron absorption? If it is true then what about foods naturally containing iron & calcium both like sesame seeds?
Thank you for posting this valuable information.
Whoa!!! Extremely informative!!! Thnx
I can not just thank you enough for what you are doing!
I really love your vedios. Thank you so much. You always deliver great imfomation. Very much appreciated.
Doctor, what causes slightly elevated red blood cells? Normal hemoglobin but low serum ferritin?

Very good videos dr.berg 👍🏼
With Majid on the screen, you are bound on your chair. Top notch acting.❤❤❤
Endometriosis really wipes me out & eating enough iron rich foods & supplements seems like such an uphill struggle. The worst symptom is SOB for me.
I have endometriosis and severely deficient. SOB is a huge symptom for me along with extreme fatigue and poor concentration. I feel completely drained of energy and like a zombie

Another helpful video Dr. ! Thanks
Is hemaplex ok to build iron?
Dr Berg what does it mean if ferritin is low? Hgb and CBC is normal, ferritin is 18ng
EXCELLENT PRESENTATION
VERY INFORMATIVE
Any idea
Skylanderina 1 I meant 2 oz of 90 percent dark chocolate, the autocorrect misspelled my words.
beatriz aceiton thanks, love dark chocolate but in remission and taking sugar out of diet. Wont allow myself to eat it anymore. Thanks!
Dude same here!
Can u list out fruits and vegetables rich in iron😔
How are you now?
Can I consume Apple Cider Vinergar if I have Celiac?
Wow Dr. Berg. You dont seize to amaze me with ur greatness ♡
wow its crazy you mention crave chewing ice...
I know someone dear to me that is anemic and chews ice everyday.
I honestly thought it was because they like it lol but thanks to you I now the true reason.
Thanks Doc your videos are amazing. Keep up the fantastic work!
Holistic Handyman when I was pregnant I had to chew ice, I thought it was a pregnancy thing but I was anaemic at the time too! Makes sense now...
It's crazy right?! It's weird what the body does when it needs something...
Thank you. I am dying from Anemia. Passed out in 2017 & ended up in a hospital. Hemoglobin was around 4. Its sad because I take iron daily & nothing helps :( seafoood is gross. 🤢
Forever Wild try organic black strap molasses ( look it up first) 🙂
Omg 😳 sane with me. Passed out at work doing a rescue job. Mine was a 4 too. Ended up getting 3 transfusions. Hope u r doing better now. Start drinking liquid chlorophyll
Hello Dr. Berg. Thank you for your inspiring videos. Can children of 5 years take apple cider vinegar ?
How do you take the Apple cider vinegar?
Very good.very informative.thank you.dr.
How many times i should take and should i take it daily ?
Dr. Berg Thank you for an interesting video!!! I can not tell you how much I have learned. I really love it when you, and Karen have the Q&A together!! Thank you for the video!
Please where the video he say in description 3:06 ???
I don't find it 😢😢😢 there's no video down below 😢😢😢
Dark chocolate for Iron? I had dark chocolate and its given me severe constipation. I'm seriously wondering if I have colon cancer.
I already have multiple sclerosis.
Ughhhhhhh. Life. Gotta keep going.
Maybe u need more potassium so you're not constipated? I'm sorry.
I put a splash of ACV in sparkling mineral water. Its delicious. In plain water not so nice😩😊
Ship Creek agree. I don't drink sodas anymore. But if you do, try it with sprite too 👌
Add cinnamon to the water too
Ghaida H what sparkling mineral water isnt soda?
Doh!😅😅😉
Ship Creek I meant like Sprite 😆
Great idea. Thanks for sharing.
None of those listed products except for the last should be referred to as foods.
Ringing in ears , eyesight change , tingling arms/legs , itchy skin and chest pains are also symptoms of anemia !!
Wait, did you just say that oxylate crystals from cruciferous veggies block iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc absorption? What?!
Thank you so much Dr. Berg. You have helped me as well to reverse my pre-diabetes last year 2023-GOD BLESS YOU!!!-AMEN!. Warm regards, Brenda from Grand Cayman Islands💫❤🙏🏼
You're absolutely welcome!
Thank you doctor
i was taking green tea and spinachs everyday after a while i was craving cornflakes and i wanted to chew hard food lol i was feeling tired i didnt know green tea low your iron !
Do you mean you had the urge to bite down hard?
Probably because it’s not good if you’re doing Keto
Exactly how much ACV and when? Is it okay to dilute the ACV with water? Thank you very much for this!
Sheila DeRooy 10 ml to every 200 ml water.
Sheila DeRooy yes water is good
Is Thorne Iron supplement fine?
Thanks doctor
Very Useful Information....Thanks....
I have a slightly low iron level of 11 but my ferritin level is at 31. Would you do an ferritin infusion at a level of 31? I am suffering so badly!
And nettle ! 😊
Wait, so does B12 help or not? And I read that eggs help because of the vitamin D in them which decreases inflammation which is an inhibitor
I was told by my doctors in China and Southeast Asia, kidney disease often times lead to anemia but you never mentioned that. Why?
Thank you for writing this comment.😎
Beet root is very good for anemia.
Could I take feroglobin an Apple cider viniger
Hi Dr berg, I have anemia and I am doing keto , my doctor said I should eat lentils, beans and oranges juice, tell me plz if I can eat them.
I will keep on praying for faster appointments and clear results."
Question: CAN THIS 49 YR WOMAN TAKE ACV?
Thank you.
Please my dear, STOP DRINKING TUMERIC TEA!
The use of turmeric can interfere with the body's absorption of iron. Therefore, people with iron deficiency should use them with caution.
I recently came across something that said turmeric prevents iron absorption. It’s actually good for those who have too much iron.
I hope you are better. Did you have the surgery, how did it go if so?
Dr. Berg? My doctor wants me to take Lozartan? What do you suggest for lowering BP?
Research hawthorn berry tea - plus adding in lemongrass. It's a natural way to lower BP. Just type it into RUclips and some results should pop up, including a video from Dr Berg on it.
Thank you Dr. Berg, could you please make video on Thalassemia? Thank you
I will check with Dr. Berg about doing a video on this!
Dr. Berg's Support Team.
Hi Dr. Berg & team, do you still recommend this? Are there any updates to this? I need to build my iron. Thanks. ~Mary
Found this; perhaps Dr. Berg can do a video if he hasn't already: "People use ashwagandha for other health conditions, including anemia. It is high in iron and has been shown to help increase hemoglobin levels..." My MCH is low, I'm starting to take organic "Ash..." to see if it helps.
what is ashwagandha
@@arteedevi3623 "Withania somnifera" aka "Indian Ginseng" is is a plant/herb commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine. To quote a Western source (WebMD):
"Ashwagandha is used for arthritis, anxiety, bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), balance, obsessive-compulsive dirorder (OCD), trouble sleeping (insomnia), tumors, tuberculosis, asthma, a skin condition marked by white patchiness (leukoderma), bronchitis, backache, fibromyalgia, menstrual problems, hiccups, Parkinson's disease, and chronic liver disease. It is also used to reduce side effects of medications used to treat cancer and schizophrenia. Ashwagandha is used to reduce levels of fat and sugar in the blood.
Ashwagandha is also used as an "adaptogen" to help the body cope with daily stress, and as a general tonic.
Some people also use ashwagandha for improving thinking ability, decreasing pain and swelling (inflammation), and preventing the effects of aging. It is also used for fertility problems in men and women and also to increase sexual desire.
Ashwagandha is applied to the skin for treating wounds, backache, and one-sided paralysis (hemiplegia).
The name Ashwagandha is from the Sanskrit language and is a combination of the word ashva, meaning horse, and gandha, meaning smell. The root has a strong aroma that is described as "horse-like."
Eggs also block iron absorption
Dr You just made me happy.thanks for your videos
Alright! Terrific!
Where is the video for the celiac issue
Hey Dr. Love your videos , I had EMR done and have GERD can I use apple cider vinegar safely without causing further damage.
what about the Egg Factor. Eggs can block absorption as well
Ty @Dr. Eric Berg DC for this video , i requested it some days ago ! U rock ! On the side note , Layne Norton claims keto and IF doesn t have anything else to add on fat loss as calorie intake and protein intake are the same . He says , "insulin thing" supporters are clowns , whats ur take on this ? I surely trust u and u helped me a lot with my body already , but he is also pretty famous and important to be talking nonsense like that and it confused me .
this was helpful. could you do a video on hair loss or thinning of hair especially for women. thanks so much
I viewed a video and according to its presenter, iron deficiency can cause hair loss...check on it.
Can I take turmeric with black pepper if my iron is low?
