    Some great videos, enjoyed them greatly. Oddly enough, I've gravitated from a shotgun to a .22. No worries about hearing damage, and if I plan to hike long distances the ammo is much easyer to carry. One thing I found is that for grouse I preffer to use iron sights, the over/under line of sight factors of a scope can make head shooting them and/or threading the bullet through small openings more compicated.

    • @CascadeBackcountry
      @CascadeBackcountry  Год назад

      Thank you! Yeah the .22 definitely has a lot of benefits. I'm headed out Saturday to do some hunting and I'm taking my Ruger Breakdown .22. I have a fixed, four power scope on it AND aftermarket iron sights... I have toyed with the idea of taking the scope off and now I think I might have to try for sure. Thanks again!

      @@CascadeBackcountry Yeah, aftermarket irons would be good with the 10/22. I've never liked those flip down sights very much, or anything with the word "buckhorn" in the description.

    Can’t hunt without a nice cup of coffee.. looking forward for your next video. I recently move to Puyallup, WA . Are grouse only in the north cascade and high altitud areas? I have the OnX app but I really don’t know how to pick an area. Any tips? Books? Looking forward for the next video.

    • @CascadeBackcountry
      @CascadeBackcountry  3 года назад +2

      Hey sorry for the delayed response! Coffee is definitely necessary ;) There should 100% be grouse in the Puyallup area! Quick tip - head east toward the mountains, find a gated and/or less traveled logging road. Try to keep it below 2000 ft elevation. Find a logging road that has a decent mix of deciduous and evergreen trees as well as ground cover on the road. Walk that road and see if you flush grouse. I do have OnX app and I love it but I find all my grouse spots in person. Best way is to get out there on some old logging roads. Video about when, where and how to hunt grouse hopefully out this Sunday :)

    You might want to read up on something called English field loads. It's basically why some loads work and some don't. It's roughly the width of the payload is the same as the depth of the payload. For different gauges. 12 gauge is kind of a exception 1 1/8 and 1 1/4 both work pretty good. But when you drop down into 20 1 ounce is majic usually you only find 5s loaded that way.

    Man I went on a long walk behind some gated logging roads yesterday and jumped an absolute unit of a grouse. But here in NW oregon like you in Washington you gotta be ready cause the brush is so thick you usually only get that quick opportunity for a shot so unfortunately I didn't get it.

    • @CascadeBackcountry
      @CascadeBackcountry  3 года назад +1

      Gotta love gated logging roads! Less people = more grouse & better hunting. The thick brush here in western PNW definitely makes grouse hunting more challenging! +1 on the 16 gauge. I have an old single break action and an old 870 Wingmaster with the plain 28" mod barrel, weighs about 6-1/2 pounds. It's a great chicken gun for the Mt. Baker/Snoqualmie region. The 16 gauge groups better compared to a 12, all else being equal. It's similar to a 20 gauge 3" mag, but better.

    BB is a shot size, all others are simply lead, steel, or Bismut -shot. Steel is not a good idea on targets on the ground or near trees, because of the risk of ricoshets. Lead is harmless to the environment on dry ground, but can be a problem in shallow waters where ducks feed. Eating game shot with lead projectiles is harmless.

    • @CascadeBackcountry
      @CascadeBackcountry  Год назад

      I like to buy nontoxic shot only. That way I don't have to match up the ammo I grab to the location I'm hunting. Much more convenient. And if it's a bit better for the forest, then win win.
