- 2022 was the deadliest year in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories in over a decade - and the violence is only increasing.
Israel itself has been in the grips of political turmoil. The country has elected the most right-wing government in its history - which is now actively trying to change the constitution, threatening the fabric of Israel's democracy. Crucially, the new Minister of National Security has a history of affiliation with extremist organisations - and has literally brandished loaded weapons at Palestinian protesters.
This is how these shifts are the result of a decades-long alliance of extremist street thugs and militant West Bank settlers, and the political machinations of Israel's current Prime Minister -himself indicted on massive corruption charges.
But, these moves to the right are being met by equally fierce street protests, fighting desperately to save Israel’s democracy.

Terrible people? They may very well be the most opressed people in human history. I do not in any way agree with their behavior, especially within the last 100 years, but can you really, logically blame a group of peoples who have been historically murdered en mass for over 3000 years, simply due to their religious stance? I know many Jews who are from Isreal, and they are wonderful men and women of God who live clean and holistic lives. Given, they also moved here (Canada) as a result of what was happening in Isreal. But I would Hazzard to call them "terrible people", especially given the fact that us, non-Jews, have no idea how it feels to have been opressed for the entire existence of your social groups life.

Someone told you vice is bad and you just accepted it as fact, and yet you’re smart enough to see that vice is a top tier media source. Some of the translations of the Hebrew are off. In most cases, not in a substantive way (like mixing up plurals and singular) but one jumped out at me 2:50. The guy is mixing common Hebrew phrases into his English, as religious people often do. He says "To Eretz Israel and to Am Israel" Eretz Israel means the land of ISrael, Am ISrael means the people of Israel. The subtitles changed the second one to "arm Israel."
Don't get me wrong, that guy and that group is completely nuts and violent. But in that sentence he was actually using very normal language without mentioning violence.

As an Israeli I am embarrassed by this side of our country. It is absolutely unforgivable that such hateful people live here! This is one of the most divisive topics in israel society today. It’s important to remember that this is not characteristic of the majority of Israelis.
I’m sorry to ask this, but then how did these people come into power? Do the majority of people not vote in Israel?
Israeli society is very complex and splintered, and there are many secular left wingers who adamantly oppose the current government. Part of the issue lies in the ultra-orthodox/right wing settler communities who have historically had children at much higher rates than other segments of Israeli society. Over time, this has led to their overrepresentation in the Israeli electorate and has contributed to the situation we have now. That said, it’s important to keep in mind that the current government is made up of a coalition of seven separate parties, only one of which - Netanyahu’s Likud party - earned over 20% of votes in the last election. Ben Gvir’s Religious Zionist party, for instance, only received about 8% of votes, which gives you a sense of how relatively fringe they are. Ultimately, much of this comes down to Netanyahu needing a coalition government to stay in power and avoid prosecution and to do that, he opted to sell his soul - and the soul of the country - to the ultra-nationalists.

If you allow yourself to keep your mind open and think that others may know something you don't, and that you may be wrong or misguided in your own beliefs, then suddenly it becomes easier to empathise and be compassionate to other people
