as a cubs fan its good to see some respect on the other side of the riviarly. I like Cubs/Cards better than Sox/Yanks because there is respect between the teams.
The market at work. Irresponsible editors/newspapers put out trash. Then the sources for their stories refuse to answer their questions and reward their irresponsibility. Good for Tony.
One of the writers from the Post-Dispatch wrote an article that said the Chicago Cubs had no chance of ever winning the World Series. The title of the article was "No Chance". Tony felt that it was a cheap shot towards the Cubs. That's the story behind this.
The funny thing is, LaRussa and Miklasz seem to get along pretty well most of the time. I know Bernie has a lot of respect for Tony. Over a 16 year period of time even guys that generally get along will be at each others throats at some point.
I'm a St. Charles resident Cubs fan who still lived in Chicago during this controversy. I'm just now (in 2018) hearing about this incident. Hats off to Larussa for being a stand-up guy! I was born and bred in inner-city Chicago, but my best friend moved from Southern Illinois at age 6. So, I was always plugged into the St. Louis baseball scene and respected that organization (Dal Maxvill, Cepeda, McCarver, etc.). Harry Carry was the Cubs' announcer for years long after his days in Stl. My first experience with him was mid-Summer 1969. Not knowing that the Mets would shock everyone by the end of that season, it seemed to be a battle between the Cubs and Cards that year. After each Cardinal win, I would listen to my weak transistor radio signal up in Chicago and hear Harry sing, "The Cardinals are coming ... tra la, tra la!" Ah, good memories! I actually literally bumped into Harry stumbling off a bus on Rush Street in Chi Town partying his brains out once.
Agree Sarge. Besides, Larussa's reputation outside of St. Louis is not great. I think he was grandstanding and just mad that the Cubs beat them in that series. Looking for a scape goat.
La Russa is a tool bag liar his players juicing prove that like everyone else he looked the other way. Conseco came out with the most credibility then anyone else involved McGwire Palmero A Rod Manny & the MLB big shots Selig etc the skippers GM's & Owners.
The "cheap shot" was an article published by the Post Dispatch talking about how the Cubs will never win a championship. Incidentally, LaRussa is long time friends with the Cubs current manager, Lou Pinella, so I suspect that had something to do with it.
Yes, that was Bernie. That was also the day before Josh Hancock died to they got over it really quickly as the Cards got another reminder as too why some things are just not a big deal.
LaRussa was right on here. The guy says: "give your opinion in the story." He's giving his opinion big guy. No pun intended. He doesn't write the story dude. You do! That's how he puts it in the story - by having you quote him. Bobby Knight had it right: the profession of reporting is one step above prostitution.
Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock died in a car accident in the early hours of the morning after this incident and I don't think this was ever spoken of again.
I see both sides clearly. However, Larussa has bullied around the St.Louis press for years and it was great to see someone finally stand up to his power hungry ways. Great job Bernie!
Ankiel took doctor prescribed HGH in 2005 to recover from knee, and arm surgeries. De Witt was not one of the best GMs in baseball. He had the best "win now" strategy in baseball, but he let his core group of players get way too old.
@LINQ0311 Yeah you're right, Miklasz is only respected by a small group of people. So its retty amazing how he's been employed by the paper for 25 years, has his own section online, and his own radio show on ESPN.
Before you insult the "fat guy", understand what was happening here. The STL Post-Dispatch beat writer wrote a comment that La Russa didn't like at all. Because of that, La Russa decided to boycott the Post-Dispatch. Bernie Miklasz--that "fat guy"--who's the most respected sports writer in the St. Louis area, called it like it was, which was grandstanding on La Russa's part. Miklasz had a right to be aggravated as La Russa was taking research away from Miklasz because of another writer.
There is no integrity in journalism, any longer. It is loooong gone, like a Frank Howard homerun. LaRussa may be a jerk, but that doesn't change what journalism is.
Lol i remember watching this from years ago. Bernie stood up kinda aggressively 😂 i was like you better chill thats the f**ckin cardinals manager you talking too 😂😂 that guy has power, especially La Russa Funny thing is i never even knew what this issue was about.
They wrote a poem called "No Tinker, No Evers, no chance!" which was another St. Louis bashing of the Cubs. That town is obsessed with bashing the Cubs on a daily basis for the last 20 years.
If by "no one to account for" you mean that they can't hold themselves accountable for what they say, then yes you are correct. Sorry, I wasn't sure you knew what you were talking about since you don't know your "There Their and They're"'s yes
I got a love-hate opinion on Tony but here I got love for him. Preach on Tony! Fuck those reporters who make you look bad! The only time you should look bad is when you lose games when you over-manage.There's where I hate him.
@TheStopmotionguy1000 YEAH TONY WAS PISSED BECAUSE THE POST WROTE A STORY ABOUT HOW HISTORICALLY BAD THE CUBS ARE AND TONY DIDNT WANT TO BE PART OF IT.
As a Cubs fan (not a Cards hater) who isn't the biggest LaRussa fan (hardly), Tony scores big points w/ me for distancing himself from that pathetic article. Folks say Cubs and their fans live on curses. Why is Dispatch perpetuating the very curses they ridicule? Good for Tony, but to be fair to the writer at the P.Conference, it is an editor decision.
This is what gives reporters a bad name. This guy should work for the National Inquirer. Good for Tony. He handled himself with class while the reporter got up and tried a physical intimidation tactic. Can you imagine how close security was to jumping on this dude and taking him down? They never should've let it get this far. The minute the guy stood up and walked up to Tony the way he did it should've been take down time. Two hits - Taser to the dude and dude hitting the ground. DONE!
You had to have those mixed in with the people that can smooze it. Like him or not, this one I praise him. Here is one with Tommy Lasorda and company. ruclips.net/video/7cu5-_kxXBg/видео.html
It's a tad ironic to see comments that praise Tony stand up for another major league team...and then they go on to slam Bernie for being overweight. So lemme get this straight, you can't talk about another team that plays a game for a living but we can however make fun of someone's physical appearance? That doesn't deal hypocritical to anybody?
Jon Sonderman Judging by the picture in you thumbnail, it doesn't surprise anyone that you would take up for the fat guy. How much do you weigh? You look like you need a bra. Disgusting.
so he never clicks in any town u do know that u are talking about the third winningest manager if he didn't "click" with any town, the GM would have fired him
In most sports you have to perform. There is no one to blame. No one to pass the buck. Thealk to my editor. Nothing to do with meI I ust work here. Sports. Real theatre.
It was a joke about a curse. I don't think the writers at the Post Dispatch actually think that the "curse" is real. it was a joke, plain and simple. It's a rivalry, I highly doubt the Cub's players are that sensitive that they cared, its not like they were making fun of anyone personally
la russa has a really good point, the Post was dumb for writing such a lame story in a daily, reputable paper that should have had some integrity for its Sports page.
I don't want Tony to go to the hall as a card because of arrogance, i just hope that the st. louis media doesen't sour him against st. louis. the post-dispatch doesen't represent true cards fans, it has its own agenda, and i just hope tony knows that cards fans love him.
as a cubs fan its good to see some respect on the other side of the riviarly. I like Cubs/Cards better than Sox/Yanks because there is respect between the teams.
I already have a high level of respect for Mr. LaRussa but THIS is beyond words. Love this guy.
It's pretty bad when your own towns newspaper gives the other team Bulletin Board material to motivate them.
1:05 LOL @ the long pause after he's done chewing the guy out and then looks around the room and he says calmy "Anybody got anything else?"
Why sports professionals hate sports reporters...101
The funny thing is, LaRussa and Miklasz seem to get along pretty well most of the time. I know Bernie has a lot of respect for Tony. Over a 16 year period of time even guys that generally get along will be at each others throats at some point.
One of the many reasons why papa tony is second to none as far as managers go
atta boy tony. such a good team player...he even defends his biggest rival, the chicago cubs.
Miss him everyday
Love it! Absolutely love it! Tony's rants are the best!
thats why i like tony so much. he has respect for all teams, including the cubs.....the bible says to love your enemies...and tony sure does it
Shut up Owin
One of the true class acts in baseball

Bernie miklasz getting mouthy with LaRussa....good stuff.
This is why I love Tony La Russa. He's a class act.
yea, turned his back on steroid use and has multible DUI's real classy
@@2bigbufords Matthew 7:1. Check it out.
@@lenpey He was responding to the "class act" post. The reference to Matthew 7:1 is cute and all, but has nothing to do with his response.
@@lenpeyWho the hell is Matthew?
Even though I am a Cubs fan I have always liked LaRussa.
Tony was a hell of a manager.
Tony Larussa is a genuine guy. He treats everyone with respect. That reporter needs to get his weight under control and do less talking.
Jim F great way to attack his looks and not the points
Agree Sarge. Besides, Larussa's reputation outside of St. Louis is not great. I think he was grandstanding and just mad that the Cubs beat them in that series. Looking for a scape goat.
La Russa is a tool bag liar his players juicing prove that like everyone else he looked the other way. Conseco came out with the most credibility then anyone else involved McGwire Palmero A Rod Manny & the MLB big shots Selig etc the skippers GM's & Owners.
Larussa was awesome
He tried to eat larussa after this exchange.
Pretty sure the reporter is Bernie MIklasz
he's a prick
And they say that Woody Woodpecker is an instigator!
Gorevet well - he's a drama queen. Overfed, sedentary ass.
Dude is a human Deadspin. Picking a fight that wasn't there instead of just asking simple questions and reporting the answers.
Chicago at the time had Jay Marrioti… NO ONE was a bigger prick (and a relative know-nothing) than that braying jack ass.
The way that guy was following Tony he must have thought he had a Cheesesteak in his pocket.
His name is Bernie miklasz he’s a fat friggin weasel.
Really good manager. He's been toasted for over a decade. Sober up, Anthony!
The reporter is Bernie Miklasz.
Good dude?
your right. Winning exempts someone from any criticism. I'd love to work for you!
wow, B. Miklasz, what balls, but I have to say, I like seeing Tony show some emotion, because a lot of times his post-game conferences are pretty dry
Man i miss tony
The "cheap shot" was an article published by the Post Dispatch talking about how the Cubs will never win a championship.
Incidentally, LaRussa is long time friends with the Cubs current manager, Lou Pinella, so I suspect that had something to do with it.
Article turned out to be bullshit lol
@@nagantm441 it may have taken 108 years but the Cubs finally had their day!
Baseballs drunken sage
adda boy tony
good for him
it's called the post-disgrace for a reason
I love how rags names are really should be called ...the Post Disgrace, The New York Slimes, the San Francisco Comical 🤣😂😅
1:39 Case closed! The score is Tony - 1 Bernie - 0
Fucking A. I love this man so much. The Skipper MFR.
Hopefully no one hires this guy to coach their team. He might cause more controversy...
Oh shit too late
I'm here after he charged after Roberto Perez when Abreu got hit in the head from a pitch
Cubs fan here....I have a lot of respect for TLR.
tonykegger glad you do cause I don't. Lol
Yes, that was Bernie. That was also the day before Josh Hancock died to they got over it really quickly as the Cards got another reminder as too why some things are just not a big deal.
@adam2eve someone wrote a bad poem slandering the cubs. He was right not to support it.

339 more win, damn good. one of the top 2 or 3 best ever
Imagine now La Russa in Chicago with Jay Mariotti. Lol
Once again with the White Sox!!!
Tony tells it like it is
You can definitely tell La Russa is an attorney.
Great job Bernie!

good old Bernie great reporter most of the time
I can't wait..
Bernie Miklasz is a clown 😂😂

Being a Cubs fan, of course I despise the Cardinals but I respect Tony for saying what he did here.
bigseanpower10 he also said McGwire shouldn't be getting flack for lying about his steroid use.
@FDAPO HOW CAN U HATE LARUSSA???
Tony has a degree in law, he is smart as hell. Like 7 managers have done that, Go cards

They wrote a poem called "No Tinker, No Evers, no chance!" which was another St. Louis bashing of the Cubs. That town is obsessed with bashing the Cubs on a daily basis for the last 20 years.
