I just watched someone explain that Maggie could take an even mundane line and deliver it exceptionally well. When you give her excellent writing, she simply knocks it out of the park. She was a living legend. She was fiercely private. And I respect that. But at the same time, how great would it have been to have known her personally as a friend or even family. Her Sardonic Wit was incredible. And it ripened with age.
Every time I see a clip from DA, I'm so disappointed that my late parents never got to see this amazing series. They would have loved it even more than I did.
For all her work she was respected. For her later roles she was absolutely beloved. I hope it was British modesty when she was publicly disdainful or dismissive of it - said she never watched Downton. I hope she secretly knew what a gift she gave us all with her performances.

The Dowager Countess, by far my favorite character of the series, completely the oposite of Lady Mary, a character, actually the only character in the series, that I trully despised, too bad she wasn't killed in the first episode. I would have fallen in love 10 times over had I ever met someone like Lady Edith.
