    I disagree with you on The Muppets (2011) wholeheartedly. I think it's a much better movie than some Muppet fans (including you; sorry) give it credit for. Having watched the film, they DO put more focus on The Muppets then the human characters. Especially considering Walter is THE main character of the film, even if he's not called a Muppet until the end. Besides, Gary and Mary's story takes a backseat to the main one involving Walter and the other Muppets.
    Also, I agree with one user on Twitter when he said this: "[F]ar too many fans were caught up on the fact that the movie was not the original pitch that many hated it out of principle, and that it was a simple 'get the gang back together' storyline. The Muppets were NEVER about complicated stories; they were about silly moments mixed in with great musical numbers and scenes with heart. The movie did an excellent job at giving us that in spades". I also believe that fans wanted to focus more Kermit and friends instead of any new Muppets. I think we should welcome new Muppet characters and that includes Walter, who is a wonderful character.
    On top of that, the movie shows that even if The Muppets weren't as popular as they were in their heyday, those who really love The Muppets have never forgotten how much they loved them. The creation of Walter, to quote a friend of mine, "allows for another perspective of why the world needs The Muppets."
    If there's any Muppet movie that focuses more on the human characters than The Muppets, it's The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island. The main characters of THOSE movies are human characters while The Muppets are reduced to supporting characters or mere cameos. (Think Rowlf the Dog, The Swedish Chef and the Electric Mayhem.) Why is it that people say that The Muppets (2011) focuses more on the humans and yet they don't criticize TMCC and MTI for ACTUALLY doing that?!?!

      Because Christmas Carol and Treasure Island have one big plot that uses the Muppets completly natural together with the humans. A muppet can be your employee or employer, there is no seperation of the worlds.
      The Muppets (2011) has two main plots and the love plot doesn't have anythink to do with muppets. The only connection the two main humans have with a muppet is Walter. Mary is a teacher but her whole class is humans, her co workers are humans, her friends and family are humans. Gary only really interacts with Walter and Marry. The whole Love Plot is useless to the bigger plot and every other movie does this when they go live action. The Smurfs, Tom and Jerry, Peter Rabbit and every time I don't care about that plot.
      You have three Main Characters, people care 0% about the story of two of them and they feel seperated from the other story because muppets and humans are seperated.
      The "Villain" is also weak. In the first half of the movie he doesn't even do anythink illegal or villainous. He wants to buy the thing and has every right to do it. He would just needed to sit back and probably would have "won".
      The Muppets (2011) was my first Muppet movie (mainly because outside the US there are less chances to watch them untill Disney+ arrived) and the human plot really just felt repetitiv but the muppets were fun. After that Most Wanted really hooked me, the humans and muppets just worked so much better together and the songs are also better. After that the old movies also had a way more unique feel and Christmas Carol ist the best. (I'm biased because I love literally all adaptations of a christmas carol that I have watched so far.)

    • @joeymartinez5814
      @joeymartinez5814 Год назад +1

      Gary & Mary do interact with the other Muppets, they help Walter find Kermit & the other Muppets & their sub-plot not only is focused on in a few brief scenes, but it serves as a paralell & motivator for the romantic relationship between Kermit & Miss Piggy in the film.

    • @QueenOfDarknes5
      @QueenOfDarknes5 Год назад +1

      @@joeymartinez5814 Walter and Kermit could have done it alone.
      We really don't need any relationship to parallel Kermits and Miss Piggys. They work perfectly on their own.

    the opening notes from the overture of the muppet christmas carol will always immediately bring me to tears, especially when accompanied by the visuals immediately dedicating the film to henson and hunt. every christmas eve, my family gets to watch me break down within the first two seconds of the film, and i think that maybe, that shows how absolutely enamored i am by the muppets.

    While I can agree that the Mahna Mahna song in the 2011 movie was definitely tagged on for nostalgia's sake, I really do feel like Rainbow Connection fits perfectly within the scene of the movie. Of course, some of it is because it is a favorite that would draw people (within the movie and within the actual audience watching the movie), but it also draws the Muppets themselves together. Kermit mentions how this could be their very last performance together and this song about that special something that connects them all is the perfect piece for them to have been their swansong (though we know it's not actually). That was my takeaway anyway.

    About the "When Love Is Gone" thing, 1 1/2 years ago, Brian Henson revealed that Disney and the Muppets are planning to fully restored that song in future releases. The only question is when it will be reinstated. And you're right. Without that song, the scene just doesn't feel right.

Even hardcore haters determined to be miserable can't resist that soundtrack. :)

    I agree on The Muppets (2011). They set it in a Muppety universe with Muppety new characters played by Muppety actors, and failed to realize that the whole appeal of Muppets on the big screen is that they contrast with the world around them. Then they spent the whole movie apologizing for the fact that no one cares about the Muppets anymore, which has never been the case. Even when they weren't making major movies, there's never been a time when they weren't popular. A comeback story doesn't make sense for them. Muppets Most Wanted was definitely an improvement, and it's too bad that it didn't get a better reception.
    Great video! Thought for sure Christmas Carol was gonna top both lists.

      Constantine hasn't been seen in any Muppets project outside of Most Wanted, and the Bride in the Muppets Haunted Mansion is just based on the character in the Disney attraction, so Colin will just be repeating himself when talking about her, since the Bride is a theme park villain. As such, I don't think they're gonna be included in the retrospective.

    Muppets Take Manhattan's underscore may be nothing to write home about on the whole, but the music for Miss Piggy chasing the mugger on skates is one of my all-time favorite Muppet film-score pieces, possibly even beating out some of my favorite tracks in Treasure Island to take the crown.
    That said, for the songs, trying to choose between Christmas Carol and Treasure Island would be near-impossible, especially the opening songs for each. Shiver My Timbers and the Scrooge song are both such masterpieces of immersive, foreboding tone...

    Always have a fondness for Muppets Christmas Coral and Muppets Treasure Island.
    Those two films while being made shortly after Jim Henson tragically passed away, still has the spirit of the old Muppet creator thanks to the people behind it still having that fresh experience from working with that legendary creator.
    And the music thanks to the Disney partnership had the best music behind those films, before Disney became the Corporation that would end up ruining the franchise later on.

    Kinda glad to hear someone else didn't really gel with the 2011 Muppets movie. It's hard to quantify why I didn't like it, but it just felt disjointed, missing plot/character points, & almost like a story about the new characters with the Muppets as a side. As you said, they just don't really make you care about the new characters aside from "the 2 guys are fans, just like you", and that's not really enough. I actually preferred the 2010s TV show, since at least that was (a) about the actual Muppets & (b) had some genuinely funny moments.

As I was doing some browsing the other and found out there are three roger rabbit books and one focusing mainly on Jessica rabbit as a serval comics focusing on roger and his adventures. I feel like roger rabbit is a forgotten character these days . And since apparently has cameo in the new chip and dale show . Maybe this is good be a good excuse to talk about you could call touchstone spotlight . Just a thought. Have a great weekend .

    Love the video. I love Muppet songs.
    It's too bad the Muppet Treasure Island Blu-ray has the instruments overpower the vocals for some reason. You can even hear it in the official Muppet video for the Cabin Fever song versus older videos of the song and the soundtrack release.

    I'm surprised you didn't mention it, but Jeff Moss copied himself melodically with the song "I'm Always Going to Love You." And twice, too. There are two Little Jerry and the Monotones songs that have the same main structure, "Four" and "With Every Beat of My Heart." By all means, I find the MTM song the superior version, it's just weird it happened twice. If nothing else, Moss clearly had a 1950's motif down pat. As for The Muppets, I also find MMW a superior movie, though I totally appreciate what TM11 was trying to do. Jason supposedly wrote the script and frankly had the pull to get Disney to actually make a Muppet film in the first place, and focusing on the new Muppet and two human characters seems to be a stealth parody of every live action hybrid version of a cartoon. Look at Yogi Bear and the Chipmunks movies. The whole film feels safe BUT that's what they were going for. Something to relaunch the franchise. I'd say the movie exists to have lead to MMW. Too bad audiences flocked to that horrid Hunger Games with the serial numbers filed off Divergent crap instead.
    Also, while I understand the reasoning of leaving telefilms off this list, it's not like there's much there to discuss. Though I did think the small amount of music in the recent Haunted Mansion Disney + was quite good, and the Moulin Scrooge bit in the Very Merry Christmas Movie was fun, I don't think any of it is worth even covering. Though, don't get me started on the music for Kermit, Frog of Denmark. If you ever want to have your heart absolutely broken by a what could have been, track those demos down.

    You know, I don't see nearly as many people talking about and praising movie scores like you do. Admittedly, I don't go out of my way to seek out people with opinions on movie scores, but since I mostly follow gaming stuff, I typically hear people talk about them in comparison to video game music... usually in the negative, unfortunately, with people saying a lot of modern video game music tries to emulate movie scores and thus "blend into the background", i.e. become boring and unmemorable. I really should look into movie score appreciation, especially since I ended up really digging The Super Mario Bros. Movie's score (partly because it used music from the video game, admittedly, but it did end up having some distinct themes of its own).

    I think Rainbow Connection as well as It´s not easy being green was just... way overused by the muppets. And they are kinda overhyped as well.... best Soundtrack I must agree with Muppet Treasure Island, although Christmas Carol is so closeby. Best song though is Moving right along. I can listen to this every day and I have it on my playlist since 1995.

    Good video...aside from the comment about the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings. Come on! That film deserves a reevaluation. I braced myself for a terrible film and found it to be way more charming than it had any right to be after all the criticism I heard. Is it flawed? Hell yeah. Is it vastly overshadowed by the Peter Jackson films? Oh most definitely. Taken on its own however, I still really liked it and it deserves better. Still a great list though. My favorite that ALWAYS brings a tear to my eye is Gonzo's I'm Going To Go Back There Someday. Gets me RIGHT IN THE FEELS every. damn. time.

    Muppets from Space would be my least favorite, if Muppets Wizard of Oz did not exist. The former is the most pointless movie I can think of; we did not need some origin for Gonzo; he was, alternatively, a 'whatever' in old muppet show, and a 'weirdo' in the Muppet Babies timeline. As for the latter, Oz was the only Muppet film I can think of that is ultimately forgettable; feels more like a vehicle for Ashanti, with the Muppets being guest stars, rather than a Muppet movie with celebrities' in it.

    • @mightyfilm

      Muppets from Space was absolutely butchered by the hack director under very annoying circumstances that lead them to hiring him in the first place. There was all this nuance that was ripped out of the script, and the ending where it was revealed the Alien "Gonzos" were another race of aliens entirely that were just cosplaying as Gonzos who were fans of his work. That said, while it is my least favorite theatrical as well, I can't hate it. There's a lot of stuff in there that doesn't work, Kermit's barely emotionally present, Animal is only at the breakout stuff for branding purposes, hack director wanted a LOT of checking mail and mundane household chore gags in the movie. But there's a lot of stuff that's actually quite good, especially the scenes with the newer Muppets Tonight characters. Plus, the Gonzo is an alien thing was considered non-canon, even by Gonzo himself. Same can't be said for Muppet Wizard of Oz. It's just a bad film all the way around, and it was a disappointing finale to a wave of projected Muppet telefilms with much stronger concepts. It made me really appreciate the theatrical Storybook movies on every aspect. Also, the songs are just awful. The best song, The Witch is in the House, is almost good, and there's a sick bit of me that likes Sadistic Miss Piggy violently threatening Dorothy, but still... meh.

      @@Babbleplay MFS tries to be a good movie with what it had left. I always wish the movie had the same burst of energy and chaos it promised with the opening "Brick House" sequence, but it seems that once the Chef bungles breakfast 95% of the house just leaves the film entirely. But I wouldn't trade any of the COVNET stuff for the world. While some of the other characters feel just there, it is, after all Gonzo's movie, and the Gonzo stuff is pretty solid, minus the lame ending we got.
      Oz, however, just... I hate it for three reasons. First off, it's just an ugly Dutch Angle filled acid trip with an overused, public domain story that the original film had parallels to anyway (being the better Wizard of Oz movie) with a stunt celebrity star that couldn't act her way out of a tissue paper bag that was a lame tie in to American Idol. Secondly, Disney inherited the project once Henson sold them the Muppets (it was done by Fox, which explains the American Idol tie in), and decided THAT was what they'd launch their ownership of the franchise with, explaining why they had no idea what to do with the characters for years and cancelled any of the 50th anniversary tours and merch they planned. And lastly, it cannot be stressed enough how many projects they considered after the Christmas Movie was a hit. We lost Kermit, Frog of Denmark, a superior concept with really good concept songs to a pile of pop culture infused mediocrity.

    • @Babbleplay
      @Babbleplay 2 года назад +1

      @@mightyfilm Fox? Huh/. That explains the more mean spirited humor than usual. Yeah, Muppets from Space was lackluster, but Oz was actually stinkaroo bad. As I said before, it really felt more like a vehicle for the stupid celebrity's ego rather than a muppet movie.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm 2 года назад +1

      @@Babbleplay Fox was in development of a couple Muppet projects back in the day, and Oz was the only one that went anywhere. There was also a new TV show that never happened, but the script was released and it was the most mid-early 2000's thing ever written. The problem I see with Oz is that they were trying to get a similar tone with the film as the Christmas Movie (let's call it VMX), but the problem was, while VMX is dated as HELL to the early 00's and very much Gen-Xer humor, there was at least some heart to it. Sure, the movie basically steals It's a Wonderful Life by concept, but a lot of the lives Kermit didn't touch were pretty depressing, Piggy and Gonzo specifically, giving that family feel of the characters some heft. There was a good story in all that Parody Movie feel they were going for (this was 2002, before everyone turned on those things). But Oz? Nope. Just a lame retelling of the story borrowing from other retellings. The best thing I've heard was that it actually does have accuracies to the book, but those are few, far between, and if they were going for a more literal translation of the book, the movie would have been far superior. Still, they had all these better projects lined up that went no where at the time, and it was a giant disappointment. Even the weaker ones sounded better.
