Cornered by the smartest of the creatures, Val (Kevin Bacon) suddenly has a plan.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Tremors is actually two movies in one. On its own terms, it's an enjoyable modern sci-fi horror-thriller, with good pacing and a sense of humor; but it's also a loving tribute to such 1950s low-budget desert-based sci-fi-horror films like Them!, It Came From Outer Space, Tarantula, and The Monolith Monsters. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward are the stars, a pair of small-town handymen living in a small desert community, who stumble upon several difficult-to-explain phenomena, including a couple of people who've died under extremely strange (and, in one instance, very grisly) circumstances. Eventually, they and a handful of their neighbors find the cause: gigantic prehistoric worm-like creatures that streak under the desert the way fish swim through oceans, reaching up and grabbing anything they need for food. Cut off from the outside world, they have to figure out how to get across the desert alive while these creatures -- that are smart as well as fast -- close in on them, stalking them like monster sharks. The film benefits from the presence of special effects that are good enough to pull this all off, keeping the shock value high, and also from a subtly humorous script and performances to match by the entire cast, and director Ron Underwood's breezy pacing of the whole picture.

I love when he screams “Can you fly!?” Horror movies never show rage of the victims when they outsmart or win against the monster or the killer.

@@halfadeaty well, its modeled after the 80 monster movies where a group of people slowly get killed by an animal, beast, etc. It certainly morphed into an almost new genre entirely: monster ensemble camp action movie. Its more heroic than horrific.

Exactly, it looks like he throws it too far behind the sandworm, but the explosion scared the sandworm into moving way faster to the point where it couldn't stop itself from plowing through the side of the cliff & ultimately meeting its own fate.
So it was more concerned about getting away than it was wanting to eat one of them?

30 years old this film is, and its still one of the best sci-fi originals.

This is legitimate proof that animatronics reign supreme over CGI when it comes to monsters movies.
I remember one animatronic took years (not too many) to make, hours to get it right and only a few seconds shown on screen. Anticlimactic, eh?
But I do agree that animatronics are so much better when it comes to that.
Jurassic Park being one of the best examples despite its awkward moments like Rexy climbing out from its paddock despite it being a long fall.
@@赤ゲキ yeah thats was a error they forgot during shootijg, but im glad it happened. Because during the shooting of rexy attacking the car, it was actually malfunctioning cause of the rain and the screams they did were legit. An error made one of the most legendary moments in animatronic films. And the fact that animatronics were much more fun because you get to interact with them rather have a programmer put into it. Sure it takes hours, hell weeks to make, but the payoff becomes huge when you make it work.

There is also one of the Lake Placid movies. One of the actors knew that he is looking at an animatronic but he was still nervous due to how realistic the large crocodile looked.
@@赤ゲキ that's why to this day animatronics were by far the only things that scare me because they are made to be what they looked. There was a museum that had a show that had a t rex and a triceratops animatronics that would pretend to fight but them run straight to you in the stands and would stop last second before leaving. I was only 8 but I still remember that. 12 years ago the museum removed that show but I still loved it to this day.

If you are in the monster stuff you can watch the Top Wo Nerae GUNBUSTER. It is a great Anime and it's fairly short, just 6 episodes

Watching this for the first time as a child, I was amazed that they didnt use explosives to kill the monster directly like every other monster movie around. The way Val realized it was just an animal and used the graboids own movement style to his advantage was badass.

It's a shame that Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon were never teamed up again in another film. They had great "buddy" chemistry; maybe they could have been a blue-collar version of Sam and Dean Winchester on "Supernatural", traveling around the country fighting evil. An author named Manley Wade Wellman wrote a great series of stories about a guitar-playing army veteran named "Silver John", who does just that. (His guitar has strings of pure silver, which come in handy when fighting many nasty critters). These tales could easily have been adapted for Val and Burt.

It wasn't really a good option in 1990. Hardware and software and the artists trained on it didn't exist or were very expensive.
Wesley McClain Mostly because it looks very obviously computer animated most times. It's very difficult to get it right, and most of the time, they don't.

Normally the worm would have diverted away from the edge of the cliff but the explosion of the bomb caused it to charge uncontrollably. Ingenious plan by Val.

This movie really knows how to bring monsters to life. If I were to have never used a computer I just might think that these Graboids were a real species.

To me, this movie is classical. Never fails to entertain me even after nearly 25 years watching it every now and then. Cant say the same with all the sequels though. This one is still the best.
