    As an 84 year old male, who has lived through and survived over a dozen Tory sessions of power, which represents almost 70% of my political years of casting my vote in the ballot box, so I would love to ask Carol Vorderman this question, and see her reaction. - What has the Conservative Party ever done for the working people of Britain? Unemployment Benefit was started by the Liberal Party in 1911. Means Test in 1931 by Ramsey McDonald Labour, The NHS started 1946 by Aneorin Bevan Labour, 1997 Winter fuel Allowance started by Labour. The only thing they have done is to keep thje Labour Party out of office for almost 30% of that time. God Bless you Carol.

      @Loneman_OG Месяц назад +4

      It's not just the optics, it's the type of policy Labour will continue with for the next 5 years. Some of us tried to warn of Starmer's duplicity, it was there for all to see, and even though some took heed, not nearly enough listened and now he has a parliamentary dictatorship and he's already shown he'll use it.
      Big business, energy companies, tech giants, et cetera are all friends of Labour now, so ask yourself why. Understandably, Carol was laser-focused on destroying the Tories, unfortunately, she (I'm assuming) didn't realise she'd be unleashing Tories in red ties on the country in their stead.

      Meh, yea. But Labour have been awful about the defence. The means test is earning of approx £500 a week, you qualify for the allowance if below this threshold. You automatically receive the payment if you get Pension Credit. This is way above the benefit cap of £284pw for a single adult applying for Universal Credit.
      So I agree that the WFA should be removed as a benefit for all pensioners. What must happen is that no pensioners fall through the cracks as is likely to happen for people who have cognitive issues and/or are isolated.

    What Carol says about "I don't want to look up what neo-liberalism means" is actually such an important point. Because people will often go "Ah well of course you don't understand, because you don't know about political theory". And to that I have two major counters. 1) Tell me what it is, if you're so smart so we can debate on a level playing field and 2) Political theory doesn't matter as much as political reality - i.e. how are things affecting people now. I don't care what Keynes or anyone else says about economics. I care about the things I see right in front of me every day that demonstrate that the way we're running things now doesn't work. Carol gets that and does a bloody good job of making other people who don't care about political theory care about the political reality!

If the MP in question refuses to do so, they should be expelled from the House for, say 6 months - AND have their pay docked straight away.

    The Tories are still saying that they left the economy in fine fettle. There is nothing working in the UK. Austerity and Brexit are responsible for the decline of the UK, particularly Austerity. Brexit, Johnson, Truss and Sunak made matters worse. The problem is that the poor have suffered more while the rich have prospered. Infrastructure has been ignored for 14 years. As a consequence, nothing is working.

If I could time travel her back to Powell's time as a Tory MP (people seem to forget this) I wonder what he'd have made of her and whether he'd actually accept and recognise her in part of his "rivers of blood" vile campaigning..

But good on her for speaking out about the corruption and tory government failures etc. Also she helped to get the message thru on tactical voting, i just hope our new Labour government does the right things & makes things better for the majority of people in the UK. Sensible tories (Rory Stewart, Tobias Ellwood) saw the writing on the wall and left the tory camp (Ellwood lost his seat but was hardly supportive in recent years).

    Lets put this into perspective. I come from an era where we had to budget for our survival, if we did not set aside monies to cover winter fuel, fpe example, we did not have anyone to help ay our bills, and neither did we expect it. Now we have an era of entitled people who expect to get help from Government, there are those who really do not need these handouts, and there are those who need it and there is systems put into place to help these unfortunate ones.
