Should You MIX Aluminum With Lead? Huge 2KG Mixed Metal Biohazard Ingot

- Should you mix aluminum with lead? In this video, I'll show you what could happen if you mix metals that have a different melting point. I overheated the lead which contained zinc causing it to spark and smoke a lot. After pouring the aluminum lead ingot, it became very brittle and a pieces broke off. I decided to paint the ingot black and add the biohazard symbol on it. The paint I used was provided by Magicfly. They have amazing acrylic paint that dries really fast and works perfect on metal. That looks like a decent boat. Id keep it and use it, but knowing this channel, itll probably get melted... Maybe into a pirate ship style boat anchor? For the new boat you just got... Oh wait...
Lol correcting my comment your grass look like astroturf if it's not good work
That's awesome liked it and cool skull ring
I'm really curious as to the attributes of this mix. I saw where you said it was brittle, but,,, would you say it was a weighted aluminum? A harder lead?
I'm looking for a corrosion resistant metal (the aluminum), that would have more weight (the lead), but would be more stiff than lead alone. Would you say this combo would fulfill that?
That paint was actually really impressive, especially painting yellow over black.
Leadnuminum nice! We need midweek videos to occupy our mandatory vacation!
Yay new content for quarantine
when you panned over to the boat and wondered what you should do with that boat, by first thought was "Melt it down if it doesn't work as a boat anymore", it may take a while but still lol
Woohoo. Been waiting all day
Wow I’ve never thought of painting it like that before. good idea!
Not worried about grinding lead dust all over your shop? And those zinc fumes are toxic.
I'm shure he wears a respirator in some of his videos you can see when lying around on the shelves same with BigstackD almost all metal fumes can be toxic so if you work with them this often you really do need a mask.
@@jimmytimmy2476 almost all except zinc actually. Zinc fumes may cause you to feel like crap for a couple of weeks but no long term side effects. Also note that melting zinc alone doesn't release any metal vapors into surroundings unless overheated till boil.
@@vantajmnextajm2402 plus something poisonous (in a small enough amount) can actually be medically good
@@Bleepbleepblorbus I don't think that applies to inhaled particles of metals though...
But when Ingested, things that contain small amounts of cyanide or capsaicin is used as cancer prevention. Same thing with copper, that is much needed in body, but can be toxic.
Turned out great as usual. soider web was actually pretty cool and interesting. Never would have thought that could happen 😮
So glad to see you stocked up on your essentials😷😊
Hello. Great video. Heres a real challenge. Make a come plete chest set and a board. That will keep you busy when you are stuck at home.
It's hard it's a good time spender and quarantine my dad challenged me to make one so we can play since we don't have a good one and it's made out of plastic and we can't leave our house but you have to cast all the pieces individually and that's a bit difficult because the sprue is four times bigger than the actual chess peace
OK ADAM at first I was like Lead and aluminum melt WOW I was blown away all that Zinc burning off and smoke I was like that cant be good and then u start painting the Ingot and I'm like that's not going to look good and now after seeing it all done THAT'S FREAKING AWESOME INGOT GOOD JOB BROTHER and the whole video comes together toxic smoke from the zinc burning to The Biohazard printed on the ingot not sure if that's the way u were going with that video lol ok my friend till next week 🇨🇦😎👍🇨🇦😎👍🇨🇦😎👍
It’s wasn’t really planned but after all that happened I figured it would be a good idea 👍🏻
@@ArtByAdrock lol well it all worked out damn good u had me down and then up 🇨🇦😎👍🇨🇦😎👍🇨🇦😎👍
The answer to this question is no. It's not a good idea. But at least you did the experiment so we don't have to.
Just lead and aluminium isn't bad. In the aluminium-industry, lead is very often mixed in. It strengthens the aluminium for those cases it has to be used in a lathe. Just be 100% sure there is no zinc in it.
@@gilles111 why not zinc?
@@vantajmnextajm2402 You can mix zinc with aluminium, there are some very strong and well conducting alloys of aluminium, zinc and magnesium - even used in space ships. Problem by mixing in conditions like in this video, at home without the non-oxygen-surrounding and very strong fume/smoke extraction you will find in factories, the zinc will produce very toxic fumes (and most gasmasks / respirators won't protect against those fumes). So that's why it isn't a good idea to mix in any zinc. The result can be seen at 3:06 in the video.
@@gilles111 that's because of overheating. Unless u boil the zinc (about 800C needed) vapor won't spread into surroundings.
@@vantajmnextajm2402 Yes; but the problem is, aluminium needs to get above 660C to melt. So you have just a very small line between melting the aluminium and vaporize your zinc in a blazing forge without any reliable temperature controller.
Yes, it could be done without the fumes but the risk of going into the high temperatures is very real. So, if you don't have to put zinc in your alloy at home, just don't do it.
Awesome Work. As always good quality stuff
Nice paint job on that bar. I was guessing that a lot of that you used was zinc, but hard to tell on camera. I know there are tests to distinguish the two, but as long as you are having fun and just making something cool, who cares what it's made of. I made some zombie/biohazard bullion a few months ago, it was a blast to make. This is one of my favorite topics, great work.
3rd new record ps i love the bar and good job on painting it your a lot better than me lol
That's amazing my man !!!
Learned a little something new!
I won't mess with that combination!
I hope that you had adequate ventilation?!
The finished product looks outstanding. Cheers 🍻🍻
love how the ingot turned out, only wish I had was you used a light green or lime green for the Bio Hazard sign =)
Indeed
AWESOME!!!
Now add some copper in the mix and bamm u made gold.
I try that another day and see what happens 😉 I’m assuming it’ll crumble apart. What happened to your vids? I enjoy watching those
@@ArtByAdrock the furnace i had finally gave up. I just need a new one.
Oh gotcha.. yeah I guess that makes sense. Well hopefully you can get a new one soon 👍🏻
Awesome job
Hey bro i am brazilian good vídeos
I like the music
I melted about 2lbs of blue painted shut off valves, they were made of Zinc. I can tell you the "spiderweb" was either because you overheated the zinc / lead, or because the impurities in the zinc / lead alloy (such as paint). But it's likely the first one is to blame.
I don’t see how you could even alloy aluminum with lead when lead is so much more dense then aluminum seems like you would have to manually mix them together until both metals are melted but I’m not a blacksmith so idk lol 😂
I think the aluminum boat would make for a great pour and some fun giveaways. A video of the dismantling and melting of something that large would be fun. Just a thought! By the way nice mixed metal melt and design.
I suggest melting the aluminum 1st, then adding the lead once that's melted. That way you can hopefully avoid overheating the lead.
the zinc was overheating, not the lead, zinc is much more reactive than lead, and burns much easier.
Very nice video and stay safe and healthy as well m8 :)
Metal and cast would be proud of that alloy. Mixing the low temp metal with a higher temp melt was, well, brave. Haven't seen mention anywhere about the lead and zinc alloy,
Good show Adam, can remember when you had tons of space on that shelving unit. Getting close to shopping time. BTW have you checked to make sure the boat isn't an aluminum magnesium alloy?
Oh God if it has magnesium
Good idea
Nice job!
Thanks for sharing
You should melt the boat 😂😂😂 kidding! Nice job man !
Oh I’m going to 😉
@@ArtByAdrock ohhhhhh i wanna see that so badly
ArtByAdrock i want to see that too!
Not a good alloy 😂 but at least we now know that! Thanks for trying that out. The ingot looks nice good paint and a nice logo! I will ask my wife to make some stickers too! I will gonna etch some bullion 😁👍👍
The ingot of dark matter, looks cool brother.
That box looked familiar 😂
How to decide value of metals when mixed like that and awesome video
Awesome
Nice and differente... very good video.... Using lead is not dangerous?
Nice
Love these videos you got me wanting to start doing this. I must ask why are you melting down non precious metal? Not sure if it is for a hobby or just enjoy doing it. Sorry I don't know much about smelting. Very interested in this!! Thank you
Good but definitely different
Woah man. 😳
At first, I was like "No, keep the natural color of the ingot"
but then I saw him painting it and it looked oddly satisfying...
Just as information, that zinc smoke will make you temporarily sick, usually feel like sick at your stomach & headache,, we always drank glass of milk to counteract its affects,, I enjoy your videos
Your channel is really simmular with BigStackD. Am I the only one that noticed this?
That was pretty interesting. I guess they used the zinc to harden up the lead maybe. Pretty toxic anyways. What kind of filter did you use in your respirator for melting and grinding? The lead is bad enough then the zinc jumping out and and saying hello I’m here. Nice looking ingot though. 👍 cheers 🍻
My brother hid a fire cracker in my foundry so 3 seconds after I lit it and I was walking away BOOOM it's scared the shit outa me
Wtf!
@@Metalstacker ikr it was skechy
I enjoy your videos do not cut down that boat what you should do in a video go magnet fishing and whatever metals you find you meltdown Also another video I don’t know if you seen the movie hell raiser you should do the puzzle box
So do they mix well or the ingot was too brittle? It looked quite robust to me once it cooled off
I gotta a question.
What did the pure aluminum ignot you weighed have on it? Because it looked really cool. And do you make the decals w/ your printer?
~ 💙 ~
Be safe out there. Oh, and melt the boat down. Curious to see how much you get out of it.
The rings were best😊😊
What were your ratios how much lead and how much aluminum by weight and did it meet your expectations as I'm sure you had at least some loose expectations on what you were going to get?
How do you know what pressures to regulate your gas at? Is that something you were taught or did you have to figure that out along the way?
What is the name of the machine you use to do the etching stickers ? Thanks for the video. Cheers
Wondering why you would mix the two metals
I did this in highschool, and when I poured the ingot into a mold it popped and exploded and splattered all over my face and got into my eyes. One expensive ass stay in a hospital, and I can say, DONT TRY THIS! AND WEAR GOGGLES IF YOU DO.
I really hope you have a good respirator to wear, those fumes are seriously toxic.
Make a garden in the boat!
Don't play with lead and zinc vapors man
As to the question what you should do with the boat...
Well it looks to me like you're probably in Florida so plenty of lakes and rivers around. I would cut the bottom out and make a glass bottom boat if it was me. I'm here in Central Florida and have thought about it many times but just haven't done it yet because I'm lacking a boat but I'm looking for it flat bottom John Boat or something simple and cheap that would fit comfortably into my virtually non-existent budget for such things
What brand and grit flap disk do you use
Hey I'm really interested in getting your pirate coin mold. How can I get one?
dcareydancarey3@gmail.com please leave me an email.
Please leave me an email dcareydancarey3@gmail.com about how to get the pirate coin mold.
👍👍👍
Can you use C2 H2 with that kiln???
New metal name could be on of these two: alumead/leminum
Think that paint will work on stone?
I don’t see why not. It works really well
The zinc was probably in those aluminum round pieces. Lead and zinc dont mix well when molten, thus the issues.
Can you melt metal and Crystal together
Howdy from pa usa
why didnt you add borax to calm down the zinc?
Nice !!!!!! 👍👍👍Thanks for sharing . You LUNATIC . Don't you know TRIX are for Kids. LOL
Why did the water turn brown?
All bullet casters: Nooooooo..
3:13, *THOSE WERE NOT SMOKE, THOSE WERE THE VAPOURS OF THE OVER HEATED METALS.*
And is very dangerous to inhale too
Question: what happens if you mix metal with minerals (like quartz or something) I think it'd cool because the quartz *could* make something new after all a lot of non metals are used in alloys
Edit: realistically though... it might just crumble
silica is a common alloying element, but never over 1% i believe. the 2 oxides in silicondioxide have to oxidize into co2 so it can only happen at higher temperatures, else you will have... a sand/metal composite? interesting don't know either
@@nr7000000001 huh, interesting
@@Bleepbleepblorbus I talked gibberish, I shouldn't have done that. The 1% is only for common steel, and I meant silicium instead of silica. Casting aluminium can have as much as 24% silicium. And for silica-alu metal matrix composites, they do exist.
@@nr7000000001 ok
@@nr7000000001 cool ,I'll have to look into that
so whats the smell of burning lead? :)
What should you do with the boat? Melt it, of course! It's aluminium, isn't it?
Don't know how my ex fits in that crucible but your always removing her
LOL
Be safe and wash your hands yayayyayayayyayayay
Ha ha ha you got tricked
those clouds you saw ye no those are the aliens preparing for April personally I would keep the boat for when they melt the polar ice caps with plasma beams and the water levels raise over Australia
The first pieces in might be zinc from a boat motor
Melt the boat 😂
That’s the plan 👍🏻
@@ArtByAdrock Show it to Bigstackd, he'll know what to do ;-)
Repaint the furnace with high temperature paint
hmm... that boat is made out of aluminum, huh? What could you do with that old boat? I wonder???
Man I know this is a stupid thing to say or want but I want you to melt the boat, please 😫🙏
Cool but what's the point of making these
MELT THE BOAT.....!
What do the neighbors say?
Esa porquería se va a romper...
Poor aluminum
Melt the boat. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
What is the spiderweb made from? And...
MELT HE BOAT!!!
Aluminum boat??? Gee... I wonder
It looks like sulfur.
U didn’t use a ice block
I only like ingot colored ingots 🙁
Fish with boat, catch fish... Then melt!!!
Lead chemically attacks aluminium. I'm an ex decorator, and we always had to avoid lead based primers and undercoats when we painted aluminium window and door frames.
