The term ‘jet lag’ flew into the dictionary in 1966, courtesy of Horace Sutton. It describes the physiological strain that long distance air travel can put on your body. Internal rhythms, governed by regular molecular processes known as circadian clocks, keep our bodily functions in a consistent 24 hour pattern. Although these rhythms can keep time on their own, they are amenable to external inputs, such as light. When you fly across the world and plunge your body into a new time zone, the rhythms that have over time lined up with your daily life are thrown out of synch.
The result? Your whole body feels the strain as your clocks try to wind themselves back into the right time. But once you understand how changes in light levels can trigger the internal processes at the root of jet lag, you can try this simple trick to try to stave it off.
This film is part of our new series that will provide the blueprint for a scientifically perfect summer. From sweating to hay fever, insects to jet lag, Kate Mulcahy will help you hack summer to engineer the perfect season. Taking a different topic each Thursday, the videos will gradually build up an equation for summer perfection; a summer survival guide certified by science.

I’ve been to the Philippines for more than a week and now I’m home in Canada and I’m falling asleep while typing this rn
I wonder how pilots deal with this when they fly long distances.
CowsRule The same way shift workers around the world do. You gut it out and sleep whenever you get 8 hours off in a row.
CowsRule Caffeine … lots of caffeine.
+SnoopyDoo Flying long distance is one thing, Doing a long flight east, coming back to base, then flying west....is a killer.
The longer you spend in a place the worse it is and they're usually there for about a day or two so it's not that bad, and caffeine
They simply sleep in flight with the autopilot on lol
I have the worst jet lag ever.
Its been like that for a week, i am awake most of the day and i become really tired in day light, so i fall a sleep from like 12-1 pm till 8 pm and its the worst feeling ever.
I really don’t wish anyone to experience it.
It fucks up my whole day.
@Jason Eghosa ?.....
How long did it take for you to recover? How did you do it? :)
@@mvl942 2 week :( it was so long, but just one day i forced myself to stay awake during the day and i fell asleep in a normal hour and than i recovered
hey guys its been 1 week since my flight from san fransico and here i am commenting on this video at 2am in the morning…
My hours rn:
I go to bed at 11pm
I sleep at 5 am
and awake at 12am
today im trying to not really sleep so i can get very tired at night and able to adjust….
Lies again? Lying At Grab
i feel terrible after all flights even in the same time zone..i feel bad because flying wears the body out. the time zone has little to do with it.
why is my whole entire life a jet lag:
you need sleep one hour early daily ;)
Are y’all still alive
Do you have sleep apnea
I have really bad Jet lag atm. I travelled eastward from Los Angeles to Dubai which is a 12 hour difference. Wish me luck.
Its day 2 after my 12 hour flight back to the east, writing this at 4am, wide awake....hi
Hii
@@salixio hi lol, hang in there!
@@jeeperscreepers9083 it's been 6 months, hope you are doing good in life and everything's fine. :)
@@user-yk4ji haha tks, yea i survived, and likewise, have a blessed one and tc 🙏
HI !!! 😀
Just get up when you have to and deal with being tired, you'll be back to normal in a few days. It's the only way, really.
Props to all pilots
It’s terrible to experience jet lag but it was so cool to go across Australia from east to west and my body actually woke up earlier. I could feel minor jet lag. Best of luck to the people reading this who are currently jet lagged
I lived underground for quite a few years. My docs say that it's part of the reason I'm so messed up. I've yet to recover a proper circadian rhythm even though it's been years since I lived in darkness.
Christopher Michael Spain why would u live undergroung
@@fr7683 May be he's batman.. now retired.
@@fr7683 he is probably the guy who people say is living under a rock
but why..?
I’d assume not many ppl could go to sleep at 17:00 or 5 pm with the traditional work schedule, so not sure how this could work
Tbh I just traveled for 10 hours straight and I'm actually dying
edit: 2 years later, 18 hours this time, so much fun
@Emily Lavën my guy i traveled from Australia to Virginia usa
I did 23.5 hrs on a plane with a stop in Seoul from Virginia Dulles to Sydney. I was absolutely destroyed but it was worse going east from Sydney to the states. When I got there I felt absolutely destroyed.
@@davidlp3019 how long did you sleep for bro? When you got to your destination...
Just did LA to Italy! 14 hrs in the sky baby
30 hours traveling from bietnam to usa
For pilots it’s easy. They simply sleep in flight while the autopilot is on lol.
Not true! Pilots control the auto pilot.
nobody's gona talk about the guy's forward head posture?
if you're 12 timezones apart from your current to target destination, what's the difference between going to bed one hour earlier versus one hour later, prior to the trip?
I also would really like to know, it’s a good question!
Thailand back to NYC, my jet lag is kinda crazy..
Nice! I like this style of video. I like the longer lectures as well. But these brief science videos are much appreciated.
Are you still alive
I left London and landed in New Zealand 5 days ago. It was a 36 hour flight. I'm now 13 hours ahead of my family and I'm not okay 😅I'm so exhausted I've started seeing spiders out of the corner of my eye. I've also caught myself talking out loud in public. Help!
They joys of living in New Zealand. We are so isolated down here it takes forever to get anywhere. Just got back from a month in Thailand and typing this at 5:30am wide awake fml.
bro is a mouth breather
Jet lag is more effective but easier to handle over shorter trips. I live in India. In 2019, I visited London which was 4.5 hours behind India. I was there all of 3 days, and ended up waking up 4 am and going to sleep by 9 pm almost involuntarily each day. It was weird at first, but I got used soon enough. It also helped me get back to the normal schedule once I was back in India.
I live in Hong Kong. I came back from Canada (12 hours behind hk) yesterday and im experiencing a horrible jet lag 💀😭
Does it means the jet is lagging or buffering?
Im;ossible to do that 1st part.
Feeling jet lagged right now after flying back from New York it’s a horrid feeling 😖
im a long haul airline pilot, laying down at the outport hotel, watching this video, struggling to sleep even tho im tired as hell
This unfortunately does not work for airline crew.
I'm sitting here wondering, how the heck I got subbed to you O_O
Thick
但是我感觉要提前适应目的地的时差非常困难,因为我们的身体还是倾向于保持原来的作息习惯。 But I think that it is difficult to get used to the destination time in advance. Since our body do tend to keep the original schedule.
me as a pilot doing Riyadh to NY round trip, jet lag is always killing me
I am going to Canada soon and I wouldn't mind going to bed really late but....
I have 2 days of school right before my trip so I don't know how I will adjust but my sleep schedule is already fucked up so yeah...
There are a few other things you can do to beat jet lag! Hydration is KEYYYY
the east thing you can actually do is to FAST .. ie avoid eating anything before and during the flight .. and only eat once you arrive ... google about fasting and Jet lag
What about artificial light ?
That hat compliments his face
Would it not work if I wake up earlier and am going west?
Great video. Most of us will try it all to avoid it...!
So if School closed and open for another 3 months I can just excused why I'm always late? Like "oohh I have jet lag teacher" 💀💀💀
What about shift workers
Wow Jakarta!
I am not here to offer tips on how to prevent and or cure jetlag. I am here to offer a simple experiment all air travelers can perform before and during your air travels. Get a weight scale that will easily fit in your backpack. Take an inventory of the clothes and accessories youre wearing and weigh yourself at the airport terminal before you board your flight and write what you weighed so you dont forget. After the aircraft gets to its maximum altitude get your scale out and weigh yourself again and write what you weigh at that altitude. The premise or assessment here is that Earth's magnetic field is more dense at ground level and so people and objects weigh more at sea level and weigh less the higher we get because Earth's magnetic field becomes increasingly less dense the further away we get from Earth. So air travelers are experiencing only partial gravitational forces unlike the astronauts who experience zero gravity at the ISS. So i guess you could say air travelers are mini-astronauts or astronauts in training..So partial gravitational forces being experienced by air travelers may be the cause of jetlag.
i went through three different time zones and i had a fever and stayed up all night.
I travelled 21 hours. Slept dead. But woke up just after 4 hrs 🤦🤦
Toronto to Tokyo .. 14/15 hour flight . arrive in Tokyo Haneda at 4 pm .. Jetlag is always epic . and what cures me ? .. ONE CUP SAKE !!!
Lord hammercy i like got so sick the day after my flight now THATS jet lag
What kind of accent does she speak with? Is that Irish?
I believe it's Korean.
British i believe
Yes, she has a very typical Irish accent.
I am sleeping in the mornings and I came here for the solution, and no I didn't fly anywhere.

Ok so nobody is going to talk about the two big elephants in the room?
You know I tried to not sleep in the day but then I slep in the day for 6 hours.
There are numerous other things you can do to beat jet lag - what have you tried?
I work swing shift as do millions and millions of people around the world. Sleep wise astronauts probably have it better. Plenty of other horrible aspects to astronauting other than sleep deprivation.
Jet lag can be annoying and exhausting. I also made a video about it.
my bouy falsified a helicopter is g force pivotal worse ; wipers under chassis repel rhytmn to even to digestive system and seat base airflow allow non nausea+
i was just on a 30 hour journey with 3 flights and a long layover in singapore. i'm kind of dying rn
still suffering from mexico
Me too! Feeling so so weird rn
I was only joking but probably true.
I have a 12 hour gap ...
Why can't these people get straight to the point instead of giving all the long explanations?
I never flew but still preparing for the consequences

Yeah yeah sure… when you have kids you can forget about it…

Such a first world problem……. That I’m currently suffering from lol
What a load of bullocks. I just sleep on the plane, and arrive well rested!
Borley4 Good for you, especially if you arrive late at night :)

Lets fly with jet , not airplane..😄
No such thing as continental drift or plate tectonics, for every reaction there is an equal and opposite reaction and when the magnetic (axis) pole moves the earth tips (normally twice a year) in the opposite direction changing its exposure to both Moon and Sun.
As the Earth tipping has been longitudinal, some but very little compass variation is detected in these times of erratic tippings ( earth changes). Changes in radiation levels run our world, every thing from jet lag to migration. It is commonly excepted that the Moon magnetically tugs on an ocean creating the bulge responsible for ocean tides.
I claim the ocean bulge is caused by the Moon blocking or interfearing with incoming dark matter (gravity).
Erratic Earth tipping causes an immediate change in Moon Earth exposure creating gravity (pressure) to interact with the bulge creating a Tsunami!
(and then the sound responsible for an earthquake)
