A college campus in Wyoming did a good job by leaving a central field as grass for a couple years and then going in and paving where all the paths had been worn in.
Applause for a beautiful and thought-provoking visual essay. My wife and I have long been interested in the principles, and this footage should be compulsory viewing for planners and residents in all sorts of circumstances. Also for ecologists. I hope this site gets swamped with viewers!
if the one between the trees in the field is England or Wales it's because that's where the public footpath runs which is legally the only place you are allowed to walk. Some of them take quite illogical routes for historical reasons, like to pass through a gate in a wall or fence none of which have existed for years.
@3:48 - where I live and where I grew up it's considered unlucky to walk underneath and in-between pole signs, so I imagine the desired path here is to avoid being unlucky. Us Humans are oddly bizarre creatures of habit huh? because when you think about it, it's surely more unlucky to have muddy shoes.... 😂😂😂 aha this just came up again with the actual answer @4:35.

I remember seeing the picture of the campus when it was just grass with desire paths and then the paved in paths

Never knew these things had a name…

Those very narrow ones are bike paths. Feet make wider ones. I used to ride a bike, I know.
Simple....why walk in the sun when you can walk in the shade?
