can't say for raising a kid but for adult expenses, I think Singapore is cheaper than KL before this inflationary period. I see KL street food in a coffee shop already about 10-15 ringgit the last time I went there while singapore is about 2-6 sgd. If we assume we earn the same amount of sgd and ringgit then singapore cost of living actually quite affordable one
$1 to $1 SG is more liveable then MY. With the current inflation rate in MY, makes living even harder 😔
10-15 ringgit= 4 dollar. U cant really get that in CBD area in SG anymore.
U try to rent a house in SG in CBD , u will know what i meant. A master room is at least 2k sgd nowadays

coffee shop that served you hawker food is considered as an inexpensive restaurant in KL as they own the whole place and do not share their rent with other vendors and price for sure will be higher. Just like SG restaurant heavenly wang or killney that also served hawker food, but price is more expensive than hawker center. The real hawker center in KL consists of many vendors in a shop lot just like the hawker center in SG. I don't know which one u went to, the one I went to is always around RM 7-8
if you bother to check the numbeo cost of living website, you can see that after factoring the salary and cost of living, the local purchasing power in SG is only 8% more than KL . Dont let your pride cloud your judgement =)
It is incorrect to say that Malaysia is 481 times the size of Singapore, hence the Malaysia government will need to invest 481 times of money to develop the nearby amenities for the Malaysia housing areas. Huge part of Malaysia is covered by natural forest, vegetations and industrial areas - all these should be subtracted to derive the actual "live-able" housing estates' area.
I agree. Australia is 23 times bigger than msia yet every housing area has basic amenities similar to SG within a reasonable distance. Poor planning and corrupt politician is the culprit
Singapore don't have 1MDB and SRC where they don't have to service their ex prime minister's debts until 2039. All that money can e used as child support for itz citizens.
By developing amenities the govt also creates jobs for ths population in the vicinity. Countries like Malaysia & Indonesia always use land area when comparing anything with Singapore.
@@simonchua6251 In addition to this, the govt chose to keep opening up new lands for development instead of making better use of land in existing development. Hence everything is very spread out. The pro is they therefore have cheaper housing. But the con is due to the lower populatio density it does not make sense to have lots of amenities. And they need to be very car reliant too. Works well when you still can rely on govt subsidized fuel and hence you take everything for granted... Wait till the country runs out of cheap petrol some day and the lackbof petrol subsidy will be a tcking time bomb.
Are your kids PURE blood Malay or at least looking like one? If Yes, Malaysia is THE obvious answer. Other than this very specific circumstance, it’s Singapore any day of the week.

@@razr8468 As a Chinese Indonesian growing up in the New Order era, I can of course relate on how painful it can be for non-Malay Malaysian to live there. Heck, I’d even encourage them to connect to their relatives back in Tangshan and prepare for the worst, i.e relocate out of Malaysia to China. Past BN governments have been rather accomodative to non-Malays. Things are vastly different nowadays of course. I’m rather doubtful BN can be that accomodative again…

1. English MUST be the main language of instruction for all subjects
2. Religions must be completely removed from school environment
3. Full removal of Malay-first quotas in public Universities to level the playing field for all races and ensure only the brightest pupils gets to enter.

The cpf we used for child birth not from our retirement fund but from our medical fund.
Our CPF has 3 accounts before 55. 1 account for house, 1 account for retirement and 1 for medical.
For working couples in singapore, they have to put their kid in infrant care or child care which can be easily 600-800 per mth. Not like what Kelvin mentioned its only milk and diapers. Raising a kid up till their university in sg can be up to 500k to 1M, which was published in newspaper years ago.

Childcare in Singapore is alot cheaper than in Malaysia considering they have subsidised childcare. Primary to Junior colledge/Diploma is extremely cheap. University is relatively cheap too if you enroll into public schools (around 30k for the entire curriculum).
@@kiki-qk5mj Subsidised has alot of caveats, not all qualify for the full benefits. Putting kid into the public system is one thing, how about their tution and after school care (for working parents)? Not all parents have the luxury to work from home (to have time to fetch their kid and tutor themselves) or even afford to be a single incomer in this high pressure environment. Cost in sg is raising rapidly also, look around and do u still agree with low cost of living than in MY? Reality check is cruel sometimes.

that is very true. 10k is barely enough for working couple meeting ends needs with serving housing loan, car loans and basic necessities. an addition to the family will be struggling.

Malaysia is about to have a small population as well. I'm in my 20s and many of my married friends are either planning to have no kids or to have limited (1-2) amount of kids due to the increasing living cost.
singapore is to live but malaysia is to survive. Imagine still can get a sgd 3.50 kolomee but kl is now costing about 10 ringgit. coffee 1.30 sgd but malaysia one cup is 2.70. houses simply cost you 300k for rumahawip. singapore transport mrt and bus malaysia need own car. earning same just different currenncy.
CPF is split into three pots - Ordinary (used for housing, education and eventually moved to retirement), Special (for retirement) and Medisave (for medical). So technically taking money for medical needs such as delivery comes from a different pot. Doesn’t affect your retirement fund.
Also there is a cap on how much you can use your cpf to pay for delivery. It’s not the full amount.
and yes you can use your CPF for housing.
Using CPF for medical or housing doesn’t affect your retirement account which is in Special Account( untouchable until you are 65 years old.
Another thing is Ordinary account pays 2.5 % interest and Special account pays 4% interest. If you have a healthy CPF contribution when you retire you can get( possibly) $1400( at least).
I have 2 kids in Singapore. Just as what they said, it is affordable if you are Singaporean. Everything is nearby. Childcare, School, clinics, playground, library, grocery, food court and all you can think of.. and there are easily 3-4 every of them nearby except for library. kids friendly place to grow up. Cost of living to raise kids is cheaper as currency is strong. Buy diaper, milk powder and books from Malaysia and ship to SG to save more.
Actually NLB can be in almost everyone's phone. Can borrow ebooks/audio books.
After visiting Singapore and talking to locals, it really changed my perspective on things.
If cheap in Singapore u still need buy diapers, milk powder & books from Malaysia?!!!. Just walk & buy from neighborhood more logical. Not dragging your ass across the Causeway for this things. BTw, don't forget to spend them allowance SGD$10 daily from your pocket. Good luck!
@@peteryong123 actually all the survey or report about sg being expensive are bullshit lah. Those who wrote the survey and reports got all information online and nv stayed in sg before. Then happily wrote a report based on online information sitting in his/her office in which ever country he/she at but definitely not in sg then submit via email, approved via email, post and wait for salary.
@@josephkokch malaysia diaper cost almost RM160 to RM180 for 6 packs and milk powder also almost RM200 a tin. Sg diaper cost $70+sgd for 6 packs and $60-$70sgd a tin.
$10sgd pocket money can have 2 to 3 meals. RM10 pocket money only 1 meal.
SG not cheaper than Malaysia? Remember Don't convert hor. Cos Sgprean earns 3k to 4k sgd and malaysian Don't earn RM9k to 12k for the same job and same position.
I really doubt that Singapore is cheaper to raise kids than Malaysia. 30 years ago when I studied in Singapore already witnessed the tension of raising a child in Singapore . Tuition fees was S$100 per subject 30 years ago . Singapore govt subsidy also cannot cover their high living cost . Currently Singapore is moving towards the standards of Hong Kong .

Lol...last week took my daughter to Fanpekka....compare with size of playground is cheaper than Sg.. but if I earn Rm is quite expensive..Rm 68 for kids 2yr above and Rm 12 for adults.
Hi Mr Money TV. Singaporeans can choose to use the Ordinary Account portion of our CPF to pay for housing loans. The trade off is that we have less interest earned in our Ordinary Account for our retirement needs. If we sell the house, we need to repay the principal amount taken from CPF + accrued interest which the principal would have earned. This money from the sale of the house will have to be paid back into our Ordinary Account. So, there are trade offs involved in using CPF to pay for housing, which may be sold in a few years time due to upgrading / downgrading.
Lucky got accru interest. If not my OA will be stagnant when I use cpf to buy house.

Father also have paternity leave now. I missed this because I was a new father long time ago. My time only wife got maternity leave and father no leave.
Paternity leave in SG now is 10 days.
@@MrMoneyTV Singapore govt partly pays for the maternity leave, which is fair. Whereas in Msia, the govt just decrees the length of time and it is the employer that ends up paying for all these. Put yourself in the shoes of a boss for a change... if Msia wins some football match the govt plays the angel and decrees a public holiday. That's so easy to do but you as the boss pays for it. If the govt says maternity is now 4mths, you too will end up paying for it. And the govt gets away being an angel whereas you become a bastard if you dun or can't pay up.
Singapore has world class education

Proximity grant, not possibility grant. And yes we can use Cpf to pay the down-payment after the grants. And the loans can get from HDB which is cheaper interest rate.
Fully agree that the minimum cost to raise a kid in sg is cheaper in sg, but I guess this is not the average cost for many parent!
I think unless your kid is very smart, or parent just simply do not care, or you have time lots of time to coach your kids by your own, else you have to pay for the high tuition fee in sg. (Generally ranging from sgd 180-500/mth a subject for primary, not even to mention for secondary) If your kid have interest in music/ art/etc, parent has to fork out expensive fee for those. (For piano, generally ranging from sgd 180-350/mth for G1 - diploma for piano)
I am not those kiasu parent and must get the kids to go to top schools or must be top in the class. However, when you see your kids struggling with studies or a specific subject, I guess most of the parent will definitely do something. I am an ex-Malaysian and completed my primary & sec in MY. I have to say the current Singapore syllabus is much tougher compare to my old time. Tuition has nearly become an essential item in SG.
Btw, Secondary school fee is not free for all school. If your kid manage to get in to top schools (mostly independent school) eg. Nanyang, Raffles Girl school, and many more. The parent has to pay 300++ per mth for the school fee, as the school is not fully funded by gov. But of course parent has a choice to choose those public/ autonomous school which only need to pay 20-30++/mth of school fee.

In Jakarta private school usually cost 200 sgd/month with avarage salary of 500-1000 / month (middle class), so heck yeah Jakarta school prices 🤣🤣
Malaysia is free till form 6 but as usual kiasu is not only common in Singapore. 😂. Malaysia quality of edu definitely need reviews. But I gathered Singapore streaming was done too early and gave kids lots of pressure. This may affect creativity in the long run, not sure if it’s correct info
This video is Misleading.
Don’t be fooled. What the interviewee said about “cheap” is SUBJECTIVE to individuals and are half truths about the grants. There are MANY terms and conditions regarding the housing grants and it’s not a fix amount. KEY WORD: “UP TO so and so amount”. He ALSO conveniently failed to mention that public housing in Singapore are only up to 99 years. Basically the average Singaporeans don’t own much of anything or even enough to give to their next generation when they pass on.
I confinement in confinement centre in Klang valley, I met this mum, she is a Malaysian but work and marry in Singapore.. she still come back Malaysia for delivery and confinement.. I was thinking maybe Singapore is expensive medically to delivery there.. this make me wonder why she deliver in Klang valley price range 15 k her total bill she shared to me the info..that is 5 years ago
Cpf can use for stamp duty, instalment, down payment. Some mnc companies also pay for baby delivery up till 23k for complication case.

03:41 481x more investment from Malaysia to reach Singapore level of amenities does not make sense. Firstly, Malaysia does not have 481x the population of Singapore, more like 6x of Singapore. Hence not every single piece of land need to be developed. Need to acknowledge that the cost is definitely more than 6 times as amenties need to connect between areas.
Yes, briefly, CPF can be used to pay for your home
20% cpf, 5% cash if taking bank loan, if its hdb loan, 25% can be from cpf
I think to compare, you have to also compare the standard of living. E.g. most families with kids have a car for transportation. Once you factor that in I am sure it is more costly than msia. One can argue that car is not a need and sg has gd public transport. So it depend on what kind of standard of living you are comparing
Please do a fair comparison between Singapore Public Housing and Malaysia Public Housing. All parts of your video was on Malaysia Private Housing.

In China, parents pour all their resources into one child. So family income spread thin when we have more children. So long it is bearable rather than thinking it is affordable should be ok. I have 3 children in my family.
My personal experience? They attended govt-aided school from primary to secondary school. Almost literally free because of the Edusave awards they have achieved at different stages in their respective education. This is to show the low cost in education when they are younger. Once move up from secondary, school fees fly much higher. Seemingly, this cost a million to rise a child in SG. Having said this, it is possible to repay study loans between 5 to 7 years with high starting wages in SG.
I was born in the late 60s so was encouraged to purchase insurance to cover children's education which was helpful - not forced saving but a discipline one.
Everyone in everywhere is feeling the stress from the overall cost of living going up. The question should be - are we getting better living moving forward?
BTW, SG housing has appreciation values. NO need freehold, 99 years is one way govt is telling us we are cared for in our lifetime. We felt assured and blessed. Thank you

You make Singapore sounds like a Lala land. But a lot of Singaporeans left the country for Aussie, Canada, NZ and Malaysia too and the birth rate dwindles from year to year.
Yeah but SGeans usually move to those countries for retirement not for work, when they’ve already felt they made enough cash. The dwindling birth rate is the reason the SG government gives money to its citizens in the first place. SG is still one of the best places in the world to work.

About the HDB.. its all 99 year lease. In Malaysia mostly it’s freehold. If u can compare housing based on that it would be great. Like what is the value of the hdb when the lease is like 30 years left vs a freehold in Malaysia.
Yea people do make the mistake of only looking at the upfront cost. Worse is that housing construction cost is much cheaper in SG. 1st due to state monopoly of land and the concentration of specialisation and competition in construction. Its not like the houses are much bigger nor are the new neighbourhoods more livable. So there is a degradation of standard of living within the generations plus the increase of cost.
Many places in Malaysia property is losing money after few years of living.
@@Jack-hy2ki Not necessarily a bad thing. Its only recently do we treat property as we do now. Rising prices only benefit the state due to increase demand for their currency and the people who flipped and got the surplus.

Yes we are very lucky but many Malaysian are like to complaint. We are not working like hell compare to people in developed country but we still have enough food on the table. When a durian season coming we sell durian to China and happily get the money without doing much work. Same goes to palm tree owner, every 15 days they harvest and get easy money. Everyone got car.

I disagree with him. Dear Malaysians, SGD 200,000 gets you a 800sqft 2 Bedroom house, how to rear a family? Minimum need 900sqft, 3 Bedroom. Singapore you want get the 100,000 subsidy, you wait long long.
Then you have to clear more land to build houses, more landslides, and floods, own land + house but destroyed regularly.
@@caiwutian2493 honestly it's that Malaysian urban planning is nonexistent. Places you should not build you build. Places where a lot of green sponges are being developed, no drain. Then all the big tree that regulate the temperature and water all being chopped. Won't say Singapore does a ok job, but it doesn't look as jialat as when I drive through KL.
@@MrBoliao98 Actually Singapore's greenery was 36% in 1980s and now it's more than 47%. The citizens demanded more green space for humans and wildlife so I think Singapore is doing a pretty decent job in that aspect. The tree planting program is still very strong and should a tree be cut down a tree without approval, it's SDG10K/tree if I remember well.
@@caiwutian2493 but the paradox is that due to redevelopment in older estate, 50 60 year old Angsana and ficus trees are chopped down, and then the whole places looks like the Cheras highway so hot.

Kelvin here. I can't speak for the entire SG. But for me and my friends, we usually knock off at 6pm, the rest of the time are for kids
Mostly Singaporean works only 5 days a week ; no work in weekend .
@@cpl151 actually that's a myth. Most people knock off at 6pm. Sure there are some who works late but these tends to be foreigners or those who are aiming for that promotion. The rest of us knock off sharp at 6pm
I wonder why need always compare malaysia to singapore.... Its clear enough to know Singapore is like a city compare to Malaysia more larger than city based.

It is hard only for certain people to have kids. Go outside there are still many family with 4-5 kids. More kids means the parents need to earn more to sustain the cost of living. Then they cry out why they are poorer than those with just 1 kid. Then they cry out why their children outcompete by some other kids. They don't see the fact that if only 1-2 kids only family, most of their parent earning will concentrate on those 1-2 kids only. So they can afford better lifestyle, better education, better resources versus those with 4-5 kids, same amount of earning will divide further by 4 or 5. Do the maths
If u live away from KL, u don't get the same salary.... so - it's back to square one...

30 over years ago in spore when i hd my 1st child..only things like education n medical is subsidised but today after my daughters gv birth to my grandchildren then i realised how much cash top up by gov n also really shocked by the cash subsidies given by gov for housing now.
Younger generation hv so much benefits now but all still dun wan to hv more children cos reason given is wanting to gv their child more quality stuff n also personal time for parents themselves. Well guess Sg wasn so well off back then😅

But last time HDB was very cheap. My 4 rm in Yishun from HDB cost 41K in 1981. Now resale average 450K. Now 4 rm BTO in Yishun starting price at 320K-418K. Now life is more complicated so if no help from the government, the younger generation cannot make it.😅
Talking about amenities, there are two surau within 1km in my living area where you can clearly listen to their praying day and night time everyday. The third ons is coming at my opposite my house within 1 km too. Is it neccessary ? We are still living in 20th century

What is the point in sacrificing your lifestyle and still cannot provide the best for the child? Get your money right first and life becomes much simpler no matter which country. Medical is heavily subsidised in SG. Chicken rice now still can get $3.50. BTO price is still very affordable.

Low birth rates is mostly attributed to higher income (Developed nations tend to lead in terms of declining birth rates), it has less to do with the costs of raising of a child, at least relatively.
@@theplaylistpsycho You assumed all Singaporeans has high income, which is not true. The middle/low income groups of people forms the majority of the population. Therefore their reason for not having kids cannot be because they have higher income. Walk around Singapore, talk to the little people, they will still tell you its cost. Not the direct cost but there are plenty of indirect cost. Whichever, Singapore tops the lowest birth rate among developed nations.
