    It seems like the entire new Superior Drummer 3 library is made up of soft to medium hits. They have completely neglected to sample any good HARD hits. This was never a problem with earlier Superior Drummer libraries - they usually had everything from pp to ff hits recorded. In this new version Toontrack have improved the software A LOT, but completely dropped the ball on the actual samples that make up the basis for the sounds. Very strange.

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  7 лет назад +2

      Well, I do not agree. It's all about the way how you record a sample. Toontrack's recordings have been always rather smooth all over the years. I think it's the other way - companies or softwares like Steven Slate Drums or common 3rd party sample packs - have focused more on providing samples with high transients so that the first perception is different. You can easily process Toontrack's samples that they are perceived as hard hits - by EQ'ing them, using compression or adjusting the transients. Furthermore, judging a drum sound without context to a song is always difficult and does not make much sense actually. And lastly, the MIDI grooves I used for this video play a crucial role as most of them were played and recorded not in the highest velocities. I'm pretty sure we'll hear sound examples in the next weeks and months where musicians will showcase how powerful those SD3 samples can be ;)

    • @danvranic2306
      @danvranic2306 7 лет назад +1

      Inside of SD3 when the groove is selected you can tell it how hard it will it. It goes from this all the way to Grohl esque smashing.

  • @swangonzalez4797
    @swangonzalez4797 3 года назад

    Thats it? Some of it was ok. Very clear. I imagine must be hard to make the clean presets sound studio polished and punchy. Addictive Drums is just smokin' out of the box. This might be better for tweakers and studio gnomes. The drums sound soft. They don't sound exciting.

      @MikeLuke  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Aris, thanks for watching. Well, those presets are more of a starting point for me. You know yourself that the way you mix the drums depends on the song, the other instruments, how loud the drums should be ... you name it. I tend to mix the drums completely on my own, but sometimes I use a preset to start with.

    Can you get hits harder than these? I find that Toontracks weak spot always seem to be to NOT include hits hard enough for rock music.

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  7 лет назад

      I assume you mean "louder" when you say "harder", right?

    • @CraigArgyleAudio
      @CraigArgyleAudio 7 лет назад +6

      More likely "harder" as in velocity. Not louder.

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  7 лет назад

      OC616 Well, the velocity is limited to 127 anyway. But I never thought Toontrack's libraries were too soft as they are heard so often in hard rock and metal. When you layer instruments, You'll get better results of course. That's the way Steven Slate Drums work, for instance

    • @karl-johanthenstrom222
      @karl-johanthenstrom222 7 лет назад +2

      No, I actually mean "harder". I feel like it's hard to get that real "weight" using Toontracks stuff. Maybe it's my lack of ability but I suspect it has to do with the lack of hard enough hits being included.

      @adrianmanea 7 лет назад +1

      I second this and I'm also curious about the RAM usage. I read some place that 16 GB would not be enough if all bleed content is downloaded and used. So Mike, if you would be so kind and share your computer configuration with us, as well as, maybe, make another video showing memory and CPU usage, for various levels of complexity of content loaded, that'd be great! Thanks.

  • @universalfraeser
    @universalfraeser 7 лет назад +1

    Hey Mike! Cool Videos and really helpful for all drum enthusiasts. Thank you man! Okay here my question . SD3 I think is mainly produced for studio work. And I saw you're video how to mix Part 1. But where do I start as a live edrummer with my cover band?
    How do I mix my drums for live? We mix our live sound by ourselves. The mixer is an the stage. Should I use the default kits and use the mixer in SD3? Or should I use a preset? What about our band mixer? A lot of questions I know. But the problem is I am a drummer not a sound engineer. So much options. I think I need a workflow for that. Advice or some tipps would be really helpful.
    Thank you very much Mike

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  7 лет назад

      Hey Ralf, well ... I should talk about that topic in a separate video, I guess. There are some tips for using SD3 live, of course. As a first one, you shouldn't change the setup that often as the software always needs to load the samples. So probably the best choice if you stick to one setup and just change the snare ... so pretty much the same approach you would do with acoustic drums. But it's a good idea for another video as I get a lot of questions about using SD3 on stage.

    • @universalfraeser
      @universalfraeser 7 лет назад

      Yeah a separate Video would be great. I think many drummer don't know how to handle a live mix. Also the problem is we sitting on the drums not in front. It must be a kind of a preset. And for some adjustments during the gig I think the macros are great. Cause they are quick and easy to use. Btw yesterday I played SD3 for the first time. You remember one of my last questions? Why should I upgrade? The sound quality blows me away. For 179€ I got so much fun. It worked instantly. Iam very happy with it. I think I make a video and show my setup. Have a n🍦 Weekend Mike

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, it is. You maybe have to run the update within Toontrack's Product Manager and make sure you've downloaded everything. Usually Toontrack provides the presets and MIDI grooves in a separate file. But yes, the "Arena Ambience" is part of the core software.

    Any idea why the expanded room mics for SD3 when you download the entire package, are not accessible in "The Metal Foundry" Pack? Do you know if there is a way to add these room mics to the mixer for additional expansions? Kind of crazy how you can't access the extra room mics in TMF or Avatar. Any ideas?

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  2 года назад

      Room mics cannot be simply transferred, because it’s a different recording. You cannot hear a snare from Metal Foundry in the room of SD3, because this snare has never been recorded in this room. There are some turnaround tricks to achieve a similar effect though, but there‘s no way to simply use room mics from one library to another.

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, 100% worth buying. You can use any external hard drive, even a 5400rpm. The type of external hard drive will just determine how fast the samples are loaded. But all types will work. And yes, I use a 2TB external hard drive with a Thunderbolt connection as I have to store not only SD3, but all of my other expansions as well and I didn't want to use two different external drives.

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  7 лет назад +3

      rnodern It's sad that you think or heard it that way, because unfortunately this is simply not true. Every MIDI (except for the Metal ones, which is mostly at the loudest velocity at 127) contains dynamics, you clearly hear ghost notes, buzz rolls and changing velocities on the fills. I've picked different MIDI grooves for each genre style. So maybe check the "Jazz" presets and tell me if you hear the ghost notes there.
