Thanks for watching! And don't miss my video on the main channel, showing how I use this to make my house temperature perfect! ruclips.net/video/snVQHsnG_V4/видео.html Also here is the template sensor code smarthomesolver.com/reviews/room-presence-temperature-automation/
Hey Reed! You don't need the shortcut in order to check if your phone is charging. You can go to the menu -> settings -> companion app -> sensors -> battery state -> and enable it. It will then change based on if you're charging or not :) Also using the states object (states.sensor.reed_room.state, etc) is strongly discouraged and is recommended to use the functions (states(), is_state(), state_attr(), is_state_attr()) as much as possible to avoid errors when the sensors aren't available yet, (for example, during home assistant startup)
2024 here, hows the presence and automations working? Wanting to go down this route, i read we can use the EverythingPresence Lite as a tracker/bluetooth proxy so one device can handle the BLE tracking and motion?
They do work well when they work. I'm still trying to figure out best automations for multiple people. Look forward to watching another video with some automation example.
Hey Reed loving your two channels so far, super cool stuff… Getting myself into this automation world… Any chance you’ll make a tutorial on how to set the Apple TV to be configured to work automatically as seen on one of your videos anytime soon? Can’t wait to see it! Keep it up buddy loving the content…
I wasn't super thrilled with having an ESP32 dangling from a wall. I've been working on a custom device which looks like a normal AC adapter on a wall box. I'm hoping to make a bunch of them for ESPresense, and then open source it so others can use it if they like. I'm trying to hit the $12/unit mark but shipping from distributors is the killer.
@01:50 Samsung sucks for this. Both phones and watch will randomise their BT MAC address fairly often, so you can't keep tracking it without constantly updating HomeAssistant. Fortunately fitbit's are static MAC, so track well and the battery lasts longer, so you're more likely to have it on you
My main issue is having a multi-level home. I’ve tweaked my ESPrensence, but still get false positives from a room in another floor. I might have to play around with the placing, like the basement close to the floor, the middle floors in the middle and the top floors somewhere high so that it doesn’t confuse locations
I've done the same setup with my Apple Watch but I've noticed that when I'm charging my watch it switches to "Not Home", I'm guessing Bluetooth gets turned off when charging but can't seem to find anyone talking about this online? Have you or anyone else noticed this? I also track my dog the same as you've done but I took it one step further and created an Apple Watch complication that has an MDI icon of a dog and then text underneath displaying which rooms he's in. It was pretty simple to configure in the companion app using "if and elif", for example: " {% if states.sensor.dog.state == "bedroom" %} Bedroom" and just repeating that for each room in my house.
How well does that work if you have 2 watches? I rely on my watch so much that I don’t want to wait for it to charge and just have a 2nd one. It gets complicated knowing which one I have when. Ie, I only take one with me when I travel. Can I get it to tell which one is active?
Question about the aqara FP2. Does yours see multiple presences in a room even when nobody is in their? Or does it bring up two beings in the room if your like for imstance laying in bed and your leg moves the other away. For me when that happens it makes theses presences move to areas that activate automations like my under bed LED strip lights. Does this happen with yours???
I have been able to add some blietooth key fob. They were left over from when we used kevo smart locks before switching to other brand. Before you ask yes they take about a full minute to register. But that is ok for our two cats.
So I like myQ garage door smart hub a lot. However, whenever there is an electrical blip or outage, I have to manually unplug and plug it back in to reset it which is completely unreliable and defeats the whole purpose of going on vacation coming back home and you can’t get in the house. Any recommendations ?? can you reach out to the company as an influencer for them to fix this fatal flaw all my smart home tech connects back on its own after electrical outages except for this
Thank you for the information, Great video! well done i have some media issues and CCTV that i don't know they don't work for me is it possible to get you to have look at for me please much appreciated
I’m still kinda bummed ESPrensense isn’t part of ESPHome. I love the idea of something g like Lewis’s EP1 having it integrated instead of needing a separate dedicated device.
Thanks for the video. I don't really wear my smart watch when i am at home just chilling. Not really comfortable feeling (at least to me anyway). And like you i don't always carry my phone to each room of my house. So this leaves trackers that you put in your pocket, but sometimes i forget to take them out before i throw my clothes into the washer so that's out to. So i guess what i'm saying is room presence detection isn't what its cracked up to be so i went with mmWave sensors which while it can't tell who's in or out of a room it can tell when everyone leaves it which is fine with me. If you can always have a tracker on you then this is great, if not 🤷♂
I have the same as you sometimes i charge my phone in a other room. And when im not in living room or kitchen i basically have not my phone on me. But ESPresense is still great, because when im sleeping phone is always next to me. When im cooking phone is always in kitchen so the ESPresense is helpfull with leaving things on etc. However yeah in other rooms ESPresense is maybe not so helpfull for me. So yeah, it still can benefit and make life easy, maybe just not that total easy as when uve always a tracker on you
I didnt want to create separate ios automations for on and off so my action starts with get "IsConnected toCharger" then i fire an event with the data containing {"state":"Is Connected to Charger"}. then i just check the data in the single event. then in the automation you can check it with {{ trigger.event.data.state == "Yes" }} . Hope this helps someone.
I bought two of the everything presence one, and I can't get it to do much of anything reliable, that being said, I haven't really put much time into it yet either.
Great video. I have been messing around with ESP presents myself. My main issue is just trying to figure out what the IDs are for everything. We have four cell phones in our house for watches and then on top of that all of our laptops and tablets are Bluetooth so trying to filter out all that stuff is where I'm stuck at and it's a process but definitely working towards it
What’s your yaml config look like for the sensor? I think I have something wrong with mine. Mqtt sees my esp but when I try to add my device nothing gets added. I’m using Apple Watch irk.
Hi, reed, great video, Im trying to replicate your template, but, i cannot make them work, are you writing them on the configuration.yaml, or in the template.yaml? thank a lot!
Rather than relying on an apple shortcut for when your phone is charging, have you tried using the battery state in device created by the iPhone Home Assistant companion app? Thanks for the tip on the IRK! I tried this about a year ago and gave up and tossed my ESP32’s in a box because of the conflicts I had with multiple iPhones. I’m going to give it another shot this weekend!
The issue I'm having with ESPressence is the range. We have a small house and I have a chip in every room. Even though I have most of the ranges set to 2 meters (6 feet) it will still register that I'm in a room 30 feet away. This makes it difficult to do automations because I can be in one room and it thinks im in another, so it executes those automations, which can be really annoying if someone else is in that other room. Do you know of any settings to tweak to get the range more accurate?
i know its 6 months later, but did you have any luck with this? having similar issues with the range being way way off had it set to as low as 1m just to test and it was reporting me in that room while i was on the second floor and about 30 feet away.
Nope, never got it corrected. I just had to add other things to try and correct it (like motion sensors). I'm really hoping for an update. I would really like the ability to detect who is in what room accurately.
@@xXDeadJesterXx yea seems like its a pipedream at this point. I cannot for the life of me pinpoint what is causing the jumping around, one day it will work flawless, other days (like today for example) my watch is sitting right beside the ESP32D inches away and its saying that I'm in the master bedroom on the 2nd floor. it does seem to be more consistent with my wife's watch and phone (IOS) compared to my Samsung watch and phone.
Why not only use your Apple watch to track your location in the house? Since it is attached to you and I'm assuming rarely comes off seems like it would be the superior choice to track your location.
You might want to use states("sensor.a") == "thing" or is_state("sensor.a", "thing") instead of states.sensor.a.state == "thing", for the sake of not having errors during bootup (and for readability) in your template sensors.

Hello! Can this be done with homebridge? Thanks
Thanks Reed. Your ESPresense content lately has been really useful, I finally have it all setup and working in my new home.
Hey Reed! You don't need the shortcut in order to check if your phone is charging. You can go to the menu -> settings -> companion app -> sensors -> battery state -> and enable it. It will then change based on if you're charging or not :)

Templates are awesome. Nice work. Never thought to use for this.
Thanks this is what i am currently working on. I also am integrating flair vents.

Reed, could you create a video about how to set up withings bed sensor with home assistant?

It's called location tracking, which is an active method. Presence detection is passive.

you might want to us an air tag for Luna as it has a long battery, light weight and has an accurate tracker.
@01:50 Samsung sucks for this. Both phones and watch will randomise their BT MAC address fairly often, so you can't keep tracking it without constantly updating HomeAssistant.

Anything good for us android users?
Great vid Reed!! I think using the IRK will help me solve the accuracy problems thanks!!
How would one setup the presence sensing for Android ? I.e. like you said about charging your phone and switching to your watch

Thanks Reed! Unrelated question - how do you get such smooth pan/tilts on your b roll shots? Is there a specific tripod or tripod head you recommend?

@reedsmarthome is there any way to get an I watch irk if you don't own a Mac? I can't follow that procedure on the Espresence page

Is it possible to make it switch to watch by putting your phone screen down?
Hello,
will work with samsung galaxy watch 5 pro ?
Thank you

Meybe you could convert those templates in blueprints and share with us :D
What power adapters do you use? I baught two different usb plugs (one usb c), and they blue dot doesnt stay on
my smartwatch isnt visible on ESPresense
i have ticwatch pro 3 ultra

I use the router to identify MAC addresses, which makes it easy to add friendly labels to the proper devices in HA

I’m still tryna get mine to track my Apple Watch idk what I have wrong it’s my current smart home task I’ve been working on when I can lol
Cant you just use a tile?

The battery state in Home Assistant doesn’t update quickly for me unless the app was just used. The Apple shortcut is instant every time.
Apple watch , it's awesome.
Can you recommend an outdoor a19 color changing smart bulb? I want to dress up the front of my house
So are you planning to assign all guests and visitors a wristband like Disneyland and track their every move?
Haha that would be crazy.

Came here to ask this and may try it myself. Wondering if it draws more on the battery? I’d think it’s fairly passive but not sure…

"sooooooo"
I wish I had a dollar for every time ...
What about motion sensors with pets? How do you prevent false positives?
What!
doesnt fell technical at all

All that constant bombardment with RF tech will take a toll... 😢 No bluetooth tags, smart watches, or mm waves for me thanks.
