    Welcome to this comprehensive tutorial on geofencing in Home Assistant with proximity and presence detection. In this video, we will delve into the concept of geofencing, demonstrate how to set it up, and show you the art of mastering it with proximity and presence detection features available in Home Assistant. Whether you are a seasoned Home Assistant user or new to the platform, understanding geofencing and leveraging its potential can greatly enhance your smart home automation experience. By the end of this tutorial, you will have a solid foundation to utilize the power of geofencing effectively. We will begin by explaining the fundamentals of geofencing, highlighting its significance in creating location-based automations for your home. Geofencing allows your smart devices to detect when family members or individuals enter and exit predefined virtual boundaries, triggering specific actions based on their proximity. Expanding upon this, we will demonstrate step-by-step instructions on configuring geofencing in Home Assistant using GPS-based tracking and various proximity detection methods. Furthermore, we will explore the concept of presence detection in Home Assistant, an essential companion to geofencing. Presence detection enables you to detect whether someone is currently at home or away, opening up countless possibilities for automating your smart devices based on occupancy. Throughout this tutorial, we will guide you through practical examples, showcasing how to set up automations that adjust climate settings, all through the perfect synergy of geofencing and presence detection. Don't miss out on the opportunity to master geofencing with proximity and presence detection in Home Assistant. Unlock the potential of unparalleled automation possibilities and ensure your smart home adapts to your lifestyle seamlessly. Watch this video now to revolutionize your home automation experience!

    Another reason to use the person instead of the phone is that you can change the person's tracked devices. So if you get a new phone, you just change that in the person. No need to change automations (Node-RED or native).

    Thanks for another great tutorial Ed! You explain everything thoroughly, in an easy to follow format. I always pause/play to follow along using the HA companion app on my phone. Sometimes for testing and review, I'll replicate your automations exactly as you set them up in the visual editor, then go back & edit to add my devices. Brilliant video. I was able to get my rules setup the way I wanted. I did a test, I left my house and it turned off my heating. But when I returned to the house, it was still showing my location as away. To get it to update I had to turn location off on my phone and turn it back on. Then it instantly recognised that I was at home and turned my heating back on. I wonder if GPS is spotty in my area?
    I must have a look at see if I can set the automation to turn on high accuracy mode while I am away, then turn it off while I am at home. But your video was awesome and really easy to understand and follow. Thank you for your hard work in putting it together.

      I'm also using proximity to open my garage door. Not sure if my approach would work for you, but I've added a condition to only perform the action if the tracking device has a bluetooth connection to one of my vehicles. You have to enable BT connection on the companion app then you can find the BT ID and name in the phone entity in HA to use in the script.
      The value template is like this:
      {{ '00:00:AA:00:00:00 (My Bluetooth Device)' in state_attr('sensor.my_galaxy_phone_bluetooth_connection', 'connected_paired_devices')
      or '00:AA:00:00:00:00 (My Other Bluetooth Device)' in state_attr('sensor.my_galaxy_phone_bluetooth_connection', 'connected_paired_devices')}}

    Bedankt, Ed! Ik heb een vraag over de nachtinstellingen voor de verwarming thuis. Houden jullie de verwarming 's nachts op 18 graden, naar mijn kennis en kunde zou dit wel zo zijn, mits er een andere automatisering mee draait.? Ik heb geprobeerd jouw instructies te volgen om mijn systeem zo in te stellen dat de temperatuur automatisch aangepast wordt wanneer mijn 2 tracking devices aangeven dat we in de zone zijn. Nu wil ik het systeem zo aanpassen dat na 22:30 de verwarming niet meer inschakelt en de temperatuur mag dalen naar 15 graden. Als beide tracking devices de volgende ochtend om 8:00 uur thuis zijn, moet de verwarming weer activeren naar de gewenste temperatuur. Is dit een goede instelling, en heb je misschien nog tips of aanwijzingen hoe dit het beste ingesteld kan worden?
    PS blijf zo doorgaan!

    So I have a scenario in my mind that keeps coming back to me since the Proximity was revamped. How difficult would it be to build in a "speed" parameter for the devices as well?
    First of all, I start the high-accuracy mode (refresh every 5 sec) while within 500m of my house.
    Imagine this - if you are in a car, with the speed the system could figure out, if you are travelling by a car or just returning on foot - and could automatically open a gate for you.

    • @SmartHomeJunkie
      @SmartHomeJunkie  3 месяца назад

      That would be a nice addition. You can calculate the speed yourself if you wish, using an automation that determines the speed based on measuring the difference in distance within, for example, one minute. However, it might still be inaccurate when you are standing still, such as at a traffic light.

    • @matejfoltyn

    How do you cover a situation whereby the nearest device is moving further away, however there is another device within range that is moving towards but is not yet the nearest device? In this situation, you would surely want the heating to remain on - is there a way to cater for this without complex building blocks that reference each of the devices individually?

    I have been using a similar setup but i just created an expanded zone around my house and controll HVAC when somebody is within this zone.
    The problem I have is that the approaching velocity is different, someone can be approach by car or on foot. Using one threshold doesn't work becase either you turn on the heat too early or too late. I tried to use the appraching speed sensor from the proximity integration, but that resulted in a ton of false positives as I was just driving atound the neighborhood. Ideally your want to connect ha to your navigation system and when it detects home as a destination calculates the ETA and turns on the heating or cooling accordingly.

      Agree, that would be awesome.

    • @SmartHomeJunkie

    I want to use the proximity sensor to automate my garage door based on my Tesla's location. I think before I can do that safely I need to know two things - when the car is already in the garage and the state of the garage door (open or closed) - these require hardware but that shouldn't be too complicated. One thing I didn't understand was how does HA know (accurately) where "Home" is?

    • @SmartHomeJunkie
      @SmartHomeJunkie  26 дней назад

      When you set up Home Assistant, the Home location is detected based on your location. You can change this in Settings>System>General>Edit Location.

    • @mondotv4216
      @mondotv4216 16 дней назад

      One other question - how do you track individual devices using the proximity sensor when you only have 1 "Home". For example if add the Tesla location tracker to "Home" what happens if I then add myself and my partner to the proximity sensor. Does it just look for any sensor with nearest direction of travel or distance, because both these values seem to be tied to the "Home" value and not individual people or devices?

    I've been using zones to accomplish this, but this is much better. I've been looking for a video with this instruction; thank you. Now, I need to rewrite a few automations.
    One question that I’ve yet to figure out. I have two different settings for my home when I leave town for extended periods (I travel a lot) that activates when I enter/approach the airport. However, when I arrive back in town by landing at the airport, I am not entering, leaving, approaching, or departing a zone; I appear there when my telephone turns back on. How does one create an automation/trigger based on that?

      No, and you only need one subscription for your HA server. So everyone can make use of it.

      @@eberger02 The subscription is for your server, not for the people on your server. Everyone on the server makes use of the same subscription.

    Home assistant has become a bit like a baby needing attention 24/7 constant care and bottle feeding, core and other updates every couple of days. I hope the child grows up soon. 😉

    Not to be too sensitive, I need to say that - as a person who has lost too many dear friends and a few family to drug addiction and abuse - I hate the name "smart home junkie." I get that "junkie" is a term that's used far and wide to describe somebody that really into something, but I bet not by anybody who's paid a high price to addiction. Won't stop me from watching and learning from your stuff, but I think you deserve to know that the channel name wasn't the best possible choice. Carry on.
