Curly was a lifelong dog lover. Everywhere he traveled, he'd find stray dogs, which he would foster until he could find them a home. When he toured with the Stooges, he would do this in every single town they stopped in. It's believed that Jerome 'Curly' Howard rescued over 5,000 dogs in his tragically brief lifetime.
Yes, unfortunately spaying or neutering wasn't practiced in those days, back then, society viewed drowning and shooting as acceptable ways to dispose of unwanted animals. What Curly did was commendable, but one has to wonder, how many of those 5,000 dogs had given birth to even more unwanted dogs?

Curly is always my favourite. The camera could just roll and focus on him and you were almost guaranteed something funny. Shemp was good in his own right - I always liked that when Shemp entered the trio, he found his own method of acting and didn't try to "fill in" for his brother. After Shemp, I lost interest in them.
@@DV-zv4ox I actually worked on a building site with a guy who looked and acted like Larry. That was entertaining. Curly's dislike for shaving his head was what led to his eating and heavy drinking, essentially copying his boss, Ted Healy, in the drinking department. To me, Curly looked better with his head shaved than with a full head of hair.
Curly was the best . I used to love jump and the ground spinning in circles as kid. I think kids today could handle them. I can imagine tic tok challenge hitting someone in the head with a hammer.
I discovered the Stooges during my high school years back in 2012, I was a junior then. Have loved them ever since and I see it bring smiles to the folks of the older generation to know I love something as classic as the Stooges.
The way I understand it, curly was one day cleaning a rifle when he accidentally shot himself in his ankle. The ankle was set improperly by a doctor, it calcified, and one another doctor wanted to re-break it, Carly would have none of it. As a result, currently lived with the pain of a bad ankle for the rest of his life. In order to dull the pain he would drink, sometimes rather heavily. Remember how in some scenes he seem to have a funny way of hustling about? that was because his ankle was a bit painful for him as he did that. that information comes from a book written by Moe Howard himself about the life and Times of the three stooges.
The fact shemp started with and latter came back in their time of need makes him just super awesome and a great human bieng. They were all great. Even the latter curlys. Good is not enough.
@@urbanurchin5930 I remember the 2001 movie where they had left Ted Healy and were going out on their own. Healy made several threats against them to the point where Shemp was so scared that he urinated on Larry while they were in the bunk on the train. Shemp told Moe that he couldn't do this and left. Larry thought that was the end of them, but Moe said that there was one ace in the hole left, which was his brother, Jerome, who would become Curly. After Curly's stroke and Healy being deceased, Shemp would return until his sudden death in 1955.

In the book Moe wrote, he said that before Curly was Curly, he had that nice hair and moustache and was a real ladies man. He was probably more handsome than Ted Healy before he came on. That's one of the reasons I bet that Ted didn't think he was right.
I loved Curly he was my favorite on the 3 Stooges. My dad loved jokes so he loved watching comedy on TV after a long days. I never cared the last 2 men who tried to take place of Curly and their other brother Shemp I was just a toddler when I would set by my dad and watch it with him. So every time I watch them it takes me back to the good old days.
Idk cuz during an interview with Moe, in his own words he said Curly said he’d be back in half an hour and when he did he took his hat off to reveal his bald head
One slight correction: when curly wasn't able to perform, due to health problems, Moe convinced Shemp to return and help with their brother's health problems. Shemp was only meant to temporarily replace curly but ended up becoming his permanent replacement.
Yeah, there was an episode they did in 1949, maybe, where Curly made a cameo as a sleeping passenger. Which was the last one Curly appeared in and only one where Moe, Curly and Shemp were all together.
@@Lord_KillerBeeHold That Lion from '47, not '49. Malice In The Palace was from '49. Curly appeared as an irate chef, but his performance was so lackluster that his scene was cut, and his chef's role went to Larry.
Curly Howard, John Belushi Chris Farley were these heavy set guys who were without gravity on their feet. They could make us laugh just by their unbelievable physical antics that most non heavy guys could not do. They could make a face and you would laugh your brains out. We were lucky to have them make us smile.
Of course Curly was the heart, and soul of the Three Stooges, and the truthful fact was that he probably never knew he was going to become a pure legend of comedy. He's what made the Three Stooges, and it showed how funny the rest of the gang was going to be along side of him. Everything revolved around Curly, who never, ever stopped making us laugh. I truly miss this really great man, who also had a very kind, and wonderful soul. He was what defined comedy, and to this day, this man, timelessly makes us laugh so hysterically. Thank you Curly for creating laughter in this "crazy" world of ours. You are so missed.
Years ago in Milwaukee, a local theater would from time to time feature a number of Stooges films. On the marquee outside they'd proudly announce, "All Curlys." It worked.
Years ago, two friends and I were the core of our curling team. We'd get a fourth player from time to time. One year, we decided to get team shirts with names. They were bright, tie-dye pink neon shirts. Of course, we had the names Curly (me), Larry, and Moe. If you saw us, it fit. Our extra player was actually named Max. So, his shirt said, "And Max"
I recall having to get a crewcut. It didn't really bother me. But my older brother hated it. I guess it was a way for my parents to save a little bit of money. Finances were tight then.
When I was a child I loved Curly. Shemp was good but Curly was so funny that I was disappointed when he had his stroke, which I never knew about when I was a child. All I knew was that Curly was gone and his replacement was Shemp.
It was NOT enough to be truly Blessed to just have the true genius of ALL of the more than just.. "the THREE STOOGES". ....we ALSO GOT the true beauty AND GREAT Actress of AND in "the Voice of Spring" AND her LOOKS and Voice, but ALSO the outrageously Gorgeous CHRISTINE McINTYRE wow WOW AND Wowser!!!
There was almost a 7th stooge. After Larry Fine passed away, actor *Emil Stika* was signed up to play "Harry," along with Moe, and Curly Joe. Before they could start filming a single short, though, Moe also died. The three surviving ones (including Joe Besser) then decided not to continue the act without *at least one* of the Howard Brothers still living.
I AGREE, because I dont think the three stooges can continue without moe. Harry, Joe, and Curly Joe would be hated by fans because without moe, THERE IS NO TRUE THREE STOOGES LEFT, and its super sad to hear, but at least there legacy will continue on forever in our hearts
@Gran Torino......yes, Emil Sitka was in several Three Stooges shorts - along with Christine McIntyre - and a few other "regulars". All were in their element !
Joe Besser was already bald when he joined the Stooges in 1956, so he didn't have to shave his head; only Curly Joe shaved his head shortly after joining the act. At least he didn't drink himself into oblivion the way the original Curly did.
I'm not sure if this is true or not, but somewhere I read that Curly's crazy array of noises, such as his barking sounds, was due to the fact that he often forget his lines, and improvised on the spot. If it's true, as a fan I'm glad he did.
Even before they became famous, the Howard Brothers were always doing something funny. I seem to remember a story where they took the buggy into town to pick up their mother from the train station, and played a trick on her. They had shaved one side of their beards, so they looked completely different coming into town than they did going out. 😆
Today (January 18, 2024) marks the 72nd anniversary of the World's Greatest Stooge. A very sad day in Stooge history. Unfortunately we'll never know how long he would have lived had he not let his shaved head bother him, and pulled a Ted Healy (heavy drinking), plus unhealthy eating. RIP Curly. October 22, 1903-January 28, 2952.
My all time favorite scene, moe as Adolf as I look out over this little gathering;camera pulled back, it's the nuremburg rally, yeah some little gathering.
There is an episode where Curly has his full hair and is sleeping on a train. Shemp, Moe, and Larry are looking for a thief named Mr. Slip. The trio remove Curly's hat and shows his full hair. Curly was a distinguished ball room dancer and Larry was a renowned violinist and pianist. He actually plays these instruments in many episodes and not faking it. Moe is my favorite Stooge being the bully. Everyone likes Curly the most which is understandable. Shemp was funny too and underrated and deserves his do.
Because Ted Healy was the original straight man who hired the Stooges to be hecklers. After the boys left Healy, Moe took over the role. But all the same, it was great seeing Moe on the receiving end, instead of dishing it out.
I once saw a montage picture of them. Both as they appeared on screen and as they appeared in normal street attrite. I had a hard time recognizing them in street attire.
Honestly, its interesting how in the early 2000's-10's, he would have been considered attractive. Atleast in southern California since the hairstyle is popular there. He's honestly very handsome. It can be hard to pull off a bald look, but he does it perfectly. He's got a cute face

But When it came to the Stooges, I was fond of Curly, he seemed so put upon but was irrepressible. Strange how he wasn’t like his character in real life.
When I was a kid my mother hated The Three Stooges, especially as my brother and I would imitate their violent comic routines (we became quite good at it) and my mother thought we were going to cripple each other. I’ve still got a soft spot for them, all of them.
@ThoseWereTheDays.....Joe Besser had done other acting before he teamed-up with Larry and Moe. His persona has been labeled as "impish" or "child-like".
He also stipulated in his contract that he would take no hits or slaps from the other two. It is said that Larry stepped-up and stated,
"Don't worry Joe, I'll take the hits for you". Later in life - it is speculated - that all the hits and slaps and jabs, led to Larry's stroke.
@@urbanurchin5930 Besser stunk on ice. He ruined every episode he was in. I still refuse to watch him.
@@penguinvic4188 you too... my Mom hated them as well and didn't want me to watch them for the same reason. to be fair to be faaaaaiiiirrrrr we did imitate them but we never put anybody's eye out.
Forever the king: Curly!!
Curly to me was the most hilarious and also sweetest of the three. Loved these guys all my life still love seeing thier episodes. Thanks for the laughs you guys.

One of my favorite shows growing up in the 70s. Was never a boring episode. RIP guys.
It just goes to show that an actor can be COMPLETELY separate entities from the characters they play.
Sooo true.
Curly's dislike for shaving his head was what led to his eating and heavy drinking, essentially copying his boss, Ted Healy, in the drinking department. To me, Curly looked better with his head shaved than with a full head of hair.
Most are...and arent typecasted
Have you seen ONE STEP BEYOND

Curly was the best . I used to love jump and the ground spinning in circles as kid. I think kids today could handle them. I can imagine tic tok challenge hitting someone in the head with a hammer.
Maybe Paul and his date were watching the Stooges when the hammering started.
@@maxwellcrazycat9204 Nuyk nuyk nuyk.
Curley was the funniest for sure. I still imitate him every now and then.
What surprised me is now small/short they all were..
The fact shemp started with and latter came back in their time of need makes him just super awesome and a great human bieng. They were all great. Even the latter curlys. Good is not enough.
Shemp just never was able to get out of Curly's shadow.
@@mkl62 But, he had a super successful career outside of the Stooges. I have a Vitaphone DVD that has something like 60 shorts with Shemp Howard.
@@mkl62 Healy threatened to bomb 💣 theaters the Stooges appeared in, because they were tired of his behavior, and cruel practical jokes on Shemp, plus ➕ the fact the boys were going on their own.
@@urbanurchin5930 I have a few of Shemp's solos on DVD that I've seen time and time again, but I haven't seen all of them. I've even watched the 1949 film Africa Screams with Abbott and Costello, which features Shemp as a blind sharpshooter who can't see past his own nose, and also features future Stooge Joe Besser.
As a kid my dad loved the three stooges. I watched my fair share and they can be pretty amusing at times.
I absolutely love the three stooges..this show was so far beyond its time and curly was the best of the best
I'll always love the three stooges.
Curly was an originator, there will never be another

Just three words: *"Nyuk! Nyuk! Nyuk!"* 😆😂🤣
One slight correction: when curly wasn't able to perform, due to health problems, Moe convinced Shemp to return and help with their brother's health problems. Shemp was only meant to temporarily replace curly but ended up becoming his permanent replacement.
Lord Killer Bee-Until the day he died.

I loved the Three Stooges! Curly was the best!♥️♥️♥️
The 3Stooges Are Legendary Comedy I Use to watch Them On AMC Channel All The time before I went 2School..😎💯💯
Always my favorite stooge Curly the legend!
Curly Howard, John Belushi Chris Farley were these heavy set guys who were without gravity on their feet. They could make us laugh just by their unbelievable physical antics that most non heavy guys could not do. They could make a face and you would laugh your brains out. We were lucky to have them make us smile.
Don't forget John Candy.
I wish that I could go back in time and meet the Stooges.
I always thought that Curly was cute and funny! His grandson Curly G looks a lot like his late grandfather!
Some of the best tv I remember as a child at my grandparents house. Turner TV I believe as it was pretty old by the late 80s.
Doesn't surprise me . Every Summer when I was a kid , Parents would shave our heads and we hated it too !
I recall having to get a crewcut. It didn't really bother me. But my older brother hated it. I guess it was a way for my parents to save a little bit of money. Finances were tight then.
Curly was the funniest person that ever lived 🎤
Everybody loved the three stooges. I grew up watching them guys, still funny today when I watch.
When I was a child I loved Curly. Shemp was good but Curly was so funny that I was disappointed when he had his stroke, which I never knew about when I was a child. All I knew was that Curly was gone and his replacement was Shemp.
No doubt, Curly was the greatest. STOOGES FOREVER!!!
Sitka would have been better than Joe or Curly Joe, both of whom were terrible.
@@roberthill799 Besser was pretty funny as Stinky in the A&C comedies.

Old 300 Texan-That's completely true. I read that story as well, although I no longer have the book from which I read it.

So Curly is pretty much like me. Introverted and doesn't like to leave the house unless I'm grocery shopping or I feel like it.
RIP Curly. It sounds like you are not aware of the fact that the Three Stooges were a comedy trio from the 30's and 40's ....... not the 80's.....
I didn't know Curly died at 48. Sad. Chokes me up.
Glad I grew up watching them
Crap! I’m 48! I’m not going to work as hard as Curly.
My all time favorite scene, moe as Adolf as I look out over this little gathering;camera pulled back, it's the nuremburg rally, yeah some little gathering.
Actually, it was in 1947 that Curly suffered the career ending stroke during the filming of Half-Wits Holiday.
Curly was always my favorite
I LOVE CURLY WHAT A CUTIE❤❤
Moe, Larry, CHEESE! 🤣
Definitely comedy greats
It’s funny how Moe got slapped in that vaudeville set and then all he did in the Three Stooges was also Larry and Curly incessantly lol
Because Ted Healy was the original straight man who hired the Stooges to be hecklers. After the boys left Healy, Moe took over the role. But all the same, it was great seeing Moe on the receiving end, instead of dishing it out.
@@kevinmiller6380 yea, it was satisfying to see him get slapped.
My mum talked to Moe Howard on the phone as a bell operator back in the old days
